Food Fraud: How Do Corporations Change?, Chelsea Perkins
Criminal Justice Sciences
Food is a crucial necessity required by every living being on this earth in order to survive. When it comes down to the food we ingest, we want to make sure we are putting safe and healthy products into our bodies. Food corporations have cut corners in order to benefit the corporation and shareholders, which results in consequences that have been known to put human health and safety on the line. This study explores how big food corporations convicted of major food fraud crimes change their marketing methods in order to appear safer to the public. Research was conducted by …
Prerelease Reentry Programs: Posing Problems For Offenders Post-Release, Melissa Gray
Prerelease Reentry Programs: Posing Problems For Offenders Post-Release, Melissa Gray
Criminal Justice Sciences
Prison prerelease programming helps offenders develop the skills they need to successfully reintegrate back into society and provides treatment to offenders who struggle with substance abuse and mental health disorders. Prerelease programs are an important part of an offender's reentry as many offenders lack the community support needed for a healthy and safe prison to community transition. In depth interviews were conducted with reentry case managers and parole agents in Illinois to assess their perception of “what works” in relation to successful prerelease programming. Following a qualitative thematic analysis, results indicate that officers believe job skills, substance abuse treatment, utilization …
Privacy Concerns In The Digital Era: An Analysis Of The Third-Party Doctrine's Usage In The Criminal Court System, Alena Harm
Criminal Justice Sciences
This project is focused on the judicial impact of a United States Supreme Court decision in Carpenter v US (2018), which modified the judicially created “third party doctrine,” that allows law enforcement to seek information from third parties (banks, phone companies, internet providers, etc.) without the use of a search warrant. The third-party doctrine is based on the principle that when an individual conducts business with a business or organization, like a phone company or bank, they have no privacy interest in the transaction records of the user. As a result, they cannot make a claim of protection under the …

"Student Life: School Environment, Safety, Punishment", Karen Lagunas
Criminal Justice Sciences
In the U.S., many K-12 public schools utilize a variety of safety measures, such as security guards, police officers, metal detectors, and cameras to monitor students in response to recent instances of school violence. This qualitative study features semi-structured interviews with ten students and ten parents of students who attended a high school in Waukegan, Illinois that features intense security measures. Throughout the interviews, the researcher examined students’ and parents’ perceptions of metal detectors, guards, surveillance cameras, and law enforcement officers. This study also stands to provide insight into the fairness of school punishment measures.

The Effects Of Less Than Lethal Weapons, Ryan Rettig
The Effects Of Less Than Lethal Weapons, Ryan Rettig
Criminal Justice Sciences
As the Criminal Justice system is continually evolving, there have been many attempts at reforms and alternatives in policing. One specific alternative that has been implemented is the usage of less than lethal weapons. The ideology of less than lethal weapons stemmed from the Cold War in a militaristic setting, but have become much more prevalent in law enforcement in recent years. The influence and effectiveness of less than lethal weapons is crucial to officer and suspect safety. Previous research has been conducted with an emphasis in statistical analysis. However, in this research the aim is to focus more on …
Police Body Worn Cameras & Policy: Exploration Of Features And Effectiveness, Christian Reyes
Police Body Worn Cameras & Policy: Exploration Of Features And Effectiveness, Christian Reyes
Criminal Justice Sciences
Body Worn Cameras continue to be a technological tool utilized by law enforcement across the country. As academic inquiry into the effects of this tool are increasing both positive and negative effects have been associated with their implementation. With new legislation being passed in Illinois requiring all police officers to have a body worn camera on them during their shifts by 2025, the topic of their effectiveness and utilization continues to grow. Given the mixed findings found in the current literature, this inquiry aims to identify key points within how the language of body worn camera policy by different departments …

The Value Of An Anthropology Degree: Why Undergraduates Major In Anthropology And How It Prepares Them For Life After College, Maria Kitchin
The Value Of An Anthropology Degree: Why Undergraduates Major In Anthropology And How It Prepares Them For Life After College, Maria Kitchin
Theses and Dissertations
“What are you gonna do with that degree?” is a question frequently asked of anthropology majors. This question implies that the value of a college degree is only about getting a job and that the field of anthropology is not useful to that end. In fact, the popularity of anthropology and related liberal arts fields has been declining even as the number of students enrolled at universities has steadily increased. In a moment when the value of a liberal arts degree is questioned in public discourse, I explore the motivations and goals of students who have chosen to study anthropology …

Substance Use And Life-Course Narratives For Criminally Involved Veterans, Tyler J. Marcheschi
Substance Use And Life-Course Narratives For Criminally Involved Veterans, Tyler J. Marcheschi
Theses and Dissertations
Criminal justice involvement stemming from substance use is a common issue with whichmilitary veterans struggle. Research on substance use has indicated that a multitude of negative life-course outcomes can result for individuals who abuse substances. While prior research has studied the relationships between substance use and military veterans, there is little empirical analysis that focuses on the narrative accounts of veterans and their experiences with substance use. The goal of the current thesis is to expand on this topic by exploring how criminally involved veterans experience substance use and the perceived impact substance use has on the life-course according to …

Development And Characterization Of Robust Methods For Field Investigations With Portable Mass Spectrometry, Ashley Rose Stelmack
Development And Characterization Of Robust Methods For Field Investigations With Portable Mass Spectrometry, Ashley Rose Stelmack
Theses and Dissertations
Portable mass spectrometry (MS) has become an area of interest due to the ability to conduct chemical analyses in native environments. These instruments have the potential to increase efficiency and analytical throughput via real-time experimentation, minimizing the need for sample transportation. One drive towards the development of fieldable mass spectrometers is the potential for coupling to novel ambient ionization methods (or “ambient MS”), which can generate spectral data at ambient conditions from unprepared or minimally prepared samples of interest. Since the first introduction of the desorption electrospray ionization (DESI) technique in 2004, a myriad of novel techniques have been reported …
Privacy And The Digital Divide: Investigating Strategies For Digital Safety By People Of Color, Denavious Hoover
Privacy And The Digital Divide: Investigating Strategies For Digital Safety By People Of Color, Denavious Hoover
Theses and Dissertations
People of color are becoming increasingly concerned with digital privacy. They are concerned about the obfuscated data collection and sharing practices of major social media plat- forms and the strong entitlement of other users in the online space to their content. This study examines how people of color conceptualize and behave to produce safety in the online space, or, in other words, digital privacy. This study challenges notions that people are not purposeful about privacy in the online space and highlights the voices of people of color, whom are not of- ten included in theorizing or decision making about the …
