Failing With Proof: Considerations Of Queerly Failing In Visual Research, S. Gavin Weiser
Faculty Publications - College of Education
It is natural that the use of visual methods in education be concerned with the consent of adults, as the many students are under the age of majority, and as such require the consent of their adult caregivers. What does this consent and integration of consent look like when considering visual methods with young adults? By opening up ownership of a research project from its germination, this alters issues of consent from a traditional formation of an informed consent document, to one of an on-going conversation about the ownership and direction of a project. However, by ceding ownership of a …

Impact Or Impasse: How To Measure University Student Effect On Community Organizations, Joel Mcreynolds
University Research Symposium Posters and Abstracts
This applied research project examines the impact that student engagement has on the goals of a university’s community partners. A pilot study conducted in 2019 draws upon questionnaire and interview data gathered from administrators of seven community organizations that are longtime partners with Illinois State University. Key findings that emerge from descriptive statistics and thematic analysis of the data suggest that the positive impact students have on community organizations far outweighs any challenges the organizations may experience. The project concludes with recommendations on how to enhance the research tool for future evaluations and how to further improve the beneficial impacts …
Navigating Cultures And Development: An Account Of A Female Peace Corps Volunteer In Morocco, Renee Palecek
Navigating Cultures And Development: An Account Of A Female Peace Corps Volunteer In Morocco, Renee Palecek
Student Research – Stevenson Center
Little is known of how the “doers” of development may navigate regarding her community’s culture and her job in international development. This lack of knowledge leads to the erasure of experiences, felt both by the volunteer herself, as well as the community members she works with. Through autoethnographic methodology, and analysis, I retell my experiences and entanglements as a Peace Corps volunteer in Morocco with Moroccan institutions and culture, with my own identities and prior American socialization. I examine three questions: (1) How does the female PCV in Morocco make sense out of and create value from life events, relationships, …

Graduate Independent Studies - Communication Sciences and Disorders
This paper is a review of executive function skills and the role of these skills in college students. Executive functioning allows individuals to process their surroundings and manage oneself in order to successfully complete a task. During college, students are attempting to balance various aspects of their lives. Effective use of executive functioning can allow a college student to be successful across all areas of their life. However, when a breakdown in executive functioning occurs, students may have difficulty achieving goals and balancing their demanding lives. These students may benefit from speech language therapy services. This literature review brings together …
The Tragedy Of Theresa Sturla: Murder, Insanity, And Womanhood On Trial In Nineteenth-Century Chicago, Jake Engelman
The Tragedy Of Theresa Sturla: Murder, Insanity, And Womanhood On Trial In Nineteenth-Century Chicago, Jake Engelman
Theses and Dissertations
On the morning of July 10, 1882, a young prostitute named Theresa Sturla murdered her lover, Charles Stiles, on the sixth floor of the Palmer House in Chicago. During her trial four months later, Sturla’s attorney employed a dual argument of self-defense and insanity. He claimed that his client suffered from dysmenorrhea, or painful menstruation, and that she had gone temporarily insane at the time of the murder due to her defective reproductive system. According to the defense, Stiles’ abuse toward his mistress had exacerbated the disease and her only solution was to respond with violence. After a month-long trial, …
Public Policy And The Sustainability Of Tanzanian Private Universities, Simon Lucas Taabu
Public Policy And The Sustainability Of Tanzanian Private Universities, Simon Lucas Taabu
Theses and Dissertations
There has been a surge of universities in general and private universities in particular in the last three decades throughout the world. This expansion has been unanticipated in some countries, but in others especilly in SSA expansion came as a result of public policy change. The current globalization movement can be attributed to most of the reforms taking place in higher education institutions although unique features have been observed in different contries and regions. This expansion has not been paired with resource increase and hence putting quality of education, accessibility, equality and quality issues into question. Scholars have expressed doubts …
Exploring The Relationship Between Members Of Lifelong Learning Institutes And Host Institutions, Jon Charles Neidy
Exploring The Relationship Between Members Of Lifelong Learning Institutes And Host Institutions, Jon Charles Neidy
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study is to examine the relationship between an individual’s involvement in Lifelong Learning Institutes (LLIs) and his or her propensity for philanthropic giving to the institute or its hosting college or university. The dataset was acquired through a survey administered to eleven Osher Lifelong Learning Institutes (OLLIs) in the United States. Data analysis was conducted on seven research questions which explored how the length, type, and frequency of participation, as well as the level satisfaction, commitment, and feelings of community may relate to an LLI participant’s inclination to donate. The findings of this study reveal these …

“That’S So Much More Important Than The Grades”: Learning Client Centered Care Through Experiential Learning At Aphasia Camp, Esther S. Kim, J. Renzo Garcia
Teaching and Learning in Communication Sciences & Disorders
Interventions aimed at increasing life participation for people with aphasia (PWA), such as camp-based programs, are being increasingly implemented throughout North America. Such camps present a unique experiential learning opportunity for students in speech-language pathology (SLP) programs. The purpose of this study was to examine the impact of participation in aphasia camp on SLP students’ acquisition of the skills and attitudes required for client-centered care for PWA. Ten SLP students who volunteered at a weekend-long aphasia camp participated in focus groups examining their learning outcomes following their camp experience. Conventional content analysis was used to analyze the focus group transcripts. …
