Student Learning And Literacy Practices When Video Games Are Incorporated Into A Secondary Classroom, Amy Smith
Theses and Dissertations
This qualitative study explored high school students’ engagement with a unit where video games and video game materials were incorporated into an English Language Arts classroom. Over several weeks, students engaged with video game content and composed their own video games using the free online platform, Scratch. The purpose of the study was to examine students’ learning during the unit, focusing on students’ products, individual interviews, and whole class and small group discussions. The research questions were: 1. What can be learned about secondary students' learning and literacy practices when video games as a text are incorporated into the secondary …
The Moderating Effect Of Volunteer Motives On The Relation Between Job Demands And Exhaustion, Aaron Whitely
The Moderating Effect Of Volunteer Motives On The Relation Between Job Demands And Exhaustion, Aaron Whitely
Theses and Dissertations
Developments in the burnout literature have shown that concepts such as a personality can function as job resources in a framework where resources buffer the relation between job demands and burnout. The present study looked at the concept of volunteer motivation as a job resource used to buffer the relation between job demands and exhaustion. With a sample of 338 volunteers from various volunteer organizations, this research examined the relation of motivation, broken into intrinsic and extrinsic motivation, and exhaustion. Both intrinsic and extrinsic motivation were negatively associated with exhaustion. Intrinsic motivation was found to interact with job demands such …
Asian Americans, Latinos, And The Hana Center: Solidarity Through Community Organization In Northeastern Chicago, Janeth Montenegro Marquez
Asian Americans, Latinos, And The Hana Center: Solidarity Through Community Organization In Northeastern Chicago, Janeth Montenegro Marquez
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis examines how the history of exclusionary immigration laws against Chinese immigrants affected later immigration laws aimed at both new Asian and Latin Americans immigrants, with a focus on undocumented individuals from both geographic areas in the United States. The HANA Center, a Korean American nonprofit and immigration welcome center, located in Chicago, brings undocumented Asian Americans and Latinos together by creating an environment where the two can work together in their shared fight for immigration reform. Undocumented Latino voices are prominent in discourse around undocumentation in the United States, but undocumented Asian Americans are an equally important and …

The Social Construction Of Sex Trafficking Among Three Agencies Seeking To Address The Problem, Alexis Lange
The Social Construction Of Sex Trafficking Among Three Agencies Seeking To Address The Problem, Alexis Lange
Theses and Dissertations
Since 2000, there has been a growing interest in human trafficking by researchers, governments, organizations, law enforcement, and the general public. One form of human trafficking that has captured the most interest and awareness is sex trafficking. However, despite the growing research and understanding of the problem, there is no shared, collective understanding and definition of sex trafficking. Various constructions and approaches have made it challenging to prevent sex trafficking, protect victims, and prosecute traffickers. For this research, I will take a social constructionist/social problems perspective by interviewing three agencies about how they identify, define, frame, and approach to the …
Academic Freedom And Academic Integrity, Tony Shannon
Academic Freedom And Academic Integrity, Tony Shannon
International Journal for Business Education
The demand for freedom, an intense desire in fact, is a positive characteristic of our era, but human freedom does not mean acting in accord with one’s caprices or without restraint by any law. Recent controversaries at universities in Queensland have raised questions about mandating the French Review in Australian higher education as the review deals with the related issues of academic freedom and integrity.
Language Ideologies And Practices In Ghana's English Language Education: A Critical Analysis Of Golden English And National Literacy Acceleration Program Formative Report, Gideon Kwashie Kwawukumey
Language Ideologies And Practices In Ghana's English Language Education: A Critical Analysis Of Golden English And National Literacy Acceleration Program Formative Report, Gideon Kwashie Kwawukumey
Theses and Dissertations
Ghana’s transitional bilingual education has received scholarly attention of policymakers and language educators. Despite the extensive scholarship on transitional bilingual education in Ghana, little has been done to examine the relationship between transitional bilingual policy: National Literacy Acceleration Program (NALAP) and language teaching materials (e.g., English Textbooks) to ascertain whether the two have a shared ideology in promoting multilingual education. Through the use of thematic analysis and discourse analysis tools, this thesis examines both linguistic and the rhetorical (specifically visual) features of Golden English. In this work, I emphasize the importance of storytelling as a language practice used to show …
All That Is Cyber Melts Into Control: A Rhetorical Analysis Of Cybernetic Metaphors, Cem İsmail Addemir
All That Is Cyber Melts Into Control: A Rhetorical Analysis Of Cybernetic Metaphors, Cem İsmail Addemir
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis historicizes and interprets the logic of cybernetics as a communication technology and how it shaped notions of control in the mid-20th century. To situate my analysis, I focus on cybernetics, the tradition within communication studies that focuses on controlling communication through the application of feedback loops to a particular system. Since the discovery and popularization of cybernetics by the late 1950s, its central logic has been widely applied to computational technology and influenced future systems theories. Specifically, my thesis employs a rhetorical examination of cybernetic metaphors through metaphor criticism to trace the genealogy of cybernetic discourses that I …
You Ca N’T Police Your Way Out Of These Problems: Disregarding The Structural Components Of Community Problems, Kian Spencer Gaines
You Ca N’T Police Your Way Out Of These Problems: Disregarding The Structural Components Of Community Problems, Kian Spencer Gaines
Theses and Dissertations
Community-Oriented Policing Services (COPS) emerged in response to longstanding criticisms revolving around police accountability and effectiveness. It emphasizes civilian participation in crime-prevention and problem-solving efforts to build trust between the police and minoritized communities with whom they have had an antagonistic relationship. Traditional policing is reactive in nature, with officers acting only after crime has been committed or a call for service has been made; it enforces the law; “legitimizes” use of violence; and emulates military structure and tactics. In this study I describe it as “enforcement” or “crime-fighting policing.” COPS programs are embedded within this structure. Unlike traditional policing, …
Citizenship Starts Here: A Community Engaged Approach To Civic Education, Grace Northern
Citizenship Starts Here: A Community Engaged Approach To Civic Education, Grace Northern
Student Research – Stevenson Center
Abstract:
In 2015, Illinois legislators passed HB 4025 which required every public high school to include a civics course for students to complete before graduation. In 2019, this bill was expanded to include middle school students through Public Act 101-025. In this study, I investigate how the civic education standards as outlined by the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) and other school climate factors impacted middle school students’ civic engagement. I used data collected from the Center of Information and Research on Civic Learning and Engagement (CIRCLE) and the Illinois Civics Hub. The sample consisted of 497 middle school …
Non-Zero Sum Sport: Pickleball And The Theory Of Coopetition, Max Arthur Manthou
Non-Zero Sum Sport: Pickleball And The Theory Of Coopetition, Max Arthur Manthou
Theses and Dissertations
An ethnography of the sport of pickleball was conducted over a span of 7 months in the United States. Findings are partly the result of the author’s journey from playing in the park to playing in the Pros—presented in autoethnographic terms—and partly the result of 11 semi-structured interviews with 13 avid pickleball players. The main contention of this study is that sport is non-zero sum, despite a tendency for sport to be considered in zero sum terms. The non-zero sum aspect of sport is argued to be the result of two main causes: one, sport is coopetive, in that it …
High-Risk Fertility Behaviors: Impact On Child And Risks Of Maternal Mortality In Kenya, Mercy Chepkosgei Kiprop
High-Risk Fertility Behaviors: Impact On Child And Risks Of Maternal Mortality In Kenya, Mercy Chepkosgei Kiprop
Theses and Dissertations
Rapid population increase in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) over the last several decades and limited healthcare interventions have exacerbated child and maternal mortality. The maternal mortality ratio (deaths per 100,000 live births) in Sub-Saharan Africa accounts for at least 50 percent of maternal deaths globally. In 2020 alone, 5 million children under 5 years died in Kenya. Research also points out that, tragically, many of the mothers and children died of preventable or treatable conditions. Previous research has focused on biological or socioeconomic determinants of child mortality rather than their joint influences. In this study, we investigate the premise that all …
Identifying Handsaws From Cut Marks On Bone: A Microscopic Trait Analysis, Sarah Elizabeth Patterson
Identifying Handsaws From Cut Marks On Bone: A Microscopic Trait Analysis, Sarah Elizabeth Patterson
Theses and Dissertations
A naturalistic approach in applied forensic research is paramount to reliable expert testimony. Less controlled, or natural, methods in forensic toolmark research are meant to mimic the conditions under which criminal dismemberment would occur; ensuring that the outcomes of such research are applicable in criminal cases. In a monumental study, Steve Symes (1992, Morphology of Saw Marks in Human Bone: Identification of Class Characteristics, University of Tennessee) made experimental cuts into defleshed, degreased human bone with serrated blades and found that blade set width was indicative of kerf width, although kerf width alone could not indicate blade or set type. …

How Are Senior Citizens Capable To Cope With The World Of Digital Natives?, Hely Westerholm, Pirjo Takanen-Körperich
International Journal for Business Education
This study discusses the continuously growing threat to the senior citizens*), later called seniors, who can be isolated from the society if their digital competences and experiences are too poor in today’s digital world. It has been noted that to cope with one’s pursuits seniors need to actively construct and maintain their capabilities in ways that are flexible in the world of the digital devices, in response to the changing vicissitudes of life. Thus, the claim above illuminates the issue that the ability to learn from experiences is highly valued in the digital world.
The seniors are obliged to closely …

Transition Planning And The School To Prison Pipeline: A Phenomenological Study Investigating The Lived Experiences Of Alternatively Placed High School Black Males With High Incidence Disabilities, Brandon Garrett Thornton
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this qualitative study was to better inform researchers and practitioners on best practices to ensure that their transition planning practices are person-centered and culturally responsive. Using a phenomenological approach, purposeful sampling was used to conduct semi-structured interviews regarding the shared educational lived experiences of two alternatively placed Black high school males with high incidence disabilities with respect to their transition planning. Participants perceived their transition planning to be student-centered, and expected favorable employment outcomes. Additionally, the participants’ choice to be alternatively placed played a role in their perception of transition outcomes. School personnel also played a pivotal …

Minoritized Graduate Students’ Recommendations To Communication Sciences And Disorders Programs To Improve Inclusion Of Minoritized Students, Teresa M. Roberts
Teaching and Learning in Communication Sciences & Disorders
Minoritized students in Communication Sciences and Disorders (CSD) programs have unique insights into inclusion and diversity initiatives based on their lived experiences. In this study, the researcher examined and analyzed recommendations that minorized CSD graduate students provided to programs to increase inclusion. The researcher identified themes within the recommendations using discourse analysis to analyze how students positioned themselves and faculty in relationship to diversity and inclusion. A total of 104 minoritized CSD graduate students across 28 states completed a survey that included demographic information and a writing prompt for recommendations to programs. The study found that students valued broad and …

Teaching and Learning in Communication Sciences & Disorders
Simulated learning programs are an important component of allied health education. Although the role of simulation clinical educators has been highlighted as critical for student learning within simulation, their perceptions of their role have not yet been investigated. This study aimed to explore the experiences of simulation clinical educators. Participants were ten simulation clinical educators who had supported speech-language pathology students’ learning during a 5-day simulation program focussed on speech-language pathology practice with adult clients in acute hospital and rehabilitation settings. Educators participated in individual semi-structured interviews exploring their role and their perceptions of the simulation-based learning program. Data were …

Chop Suey Habits: The State Of The American Chinese Restaurant During Covid Times, Rebecca Ma
Theses and Dissertations
With the outbreak of COVID-19 in Spring 2020, the yellow peril has come back from its clandestine hiding spot with attention directed towards East and Southeast Asian citizens. In the ongoing debate of cleanliness and sanitization during a pandemic, the yellow peril scare has once again American Chinese restaurants. American Chinese restaurants found themselves to be the target of online abuse and loss of patronage in these uncertain times. While over half of American Chinese restaurants took the loss and shut down in March/April 2020, they still reopened to partial to full capacity sometime in 2020. American Chinese restaurant owners …

How I Got Over: A Phenomenological Study Of Black Vertical Transfer Students’ Academic And Interpersonal Validation At Historically White Institutions ( Hwis ), Brittany Michelle Barber
How I Got Over: A Phenomenological Study Of Black Vertical Transfer Students’ Academic And Interpersonal Validation At Historically White Institutions ( Hwis ), Brittany Michelle Barber
Theses and Dissertations
This phenomenological study sought to understand how Black vertical transfer students experience interpersonal and academic validation at historically white institutions (HWIs). Rendón’s (1994) validation theory provided a theoretical framework to examine their post-transfer experiences. A qualitative research design was used to collect data through one-on-one interviews with students who identified as Black, were at least 18 years old at the time of the interview, and had transferred to an HWI within the past six years. Once the analysis was complete, three themes emerged: invalidating HWI experiences, HWI peer validation, and pre-transfer validation experiences. The results revealed the unique experiences that …

Let’S Talk About Sex ( Work ), Baby: Women College Students And Their Experiences Producing Online Sex Work, Courtney Lynn Ebersole
Theses and Dissertations
Young college-age women have increasingly been using online sex work as a popular avenue to raise capital. I explored the experiences of women undergraduate students who engage in self-produced sex work online. In particular, this study examines the experiences of college women who turned to the online platform, OnlyFans, a mainstream adult entertainment platform that has allowed many college women to earn an income and fund their university costs, especially during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, by posting explicit pictures and videos onto the OnlyFans platform. This study identifies interpretative narratives used by undergraduate women in the U.S. to make sense …
