Community Development, Health, And Wellness: The City Of Bloomington Township’S Wellness Lifestyle Series, Jack White
Community Development, Health, And Wellness: The City Of Bloomington Township’S Wellness Lifestyle Series, Jack White
Student Research – Stevenson Center
The City of Bloomington Township, as part of its workfare program, offers to its recipients and the public the Wellness Lifestyle Series. It is a series of classes focused on health and wellness from a holistic perspective. The Series is a direct response to the 2019 McLean County Community Health Needs Assessment that identified Access to Care, Behavioral Health (Mental Health and Substance Abuse), and Healthy Eating/Active Living (Exercise, Nutrition, Obesity, and Food Access/Insecurity) as priority needs for the community. The Wellness Lifestyle Series is a creative solution for how community development can address the health and wellness of individuals …
Ensuring Equitable Access: Theory And Methodology On Future Grant Application Design For The City Of Bloomington's John M. Scott Health Care Commission, Zachary Fabos
Student Research – Stevenson Center
This research utilizes qualitative and quantitative methods to analyze perception and opinion of the City of Bloomington’s John M. Scott Health Care Commission’s grants program and its application process among recipient agencies and other participants. Data, gathered through surveys and semi-structured interviews, in 2020 and 2021, between representatives of each agency and the researcher are meant to inform the development of new approaches encouraging a wider reach of the Commission’s grants program in McLean County, Illinois. Questioning the theoretical purpose of merit, bureaucracy, and performance in an application process, this research aims to create a more accessible program for agencies …
Investigating Intersubjectivity Between Preschool Teachers And Children During Instruction: A Case Study, Andrianna Eleni Smyrniotis
Investigating Intersubjectivity Between Preschool Teachers And Children During Instruction: A Case Study, Andrianna Eleni Smyrniotis
Theses and Dissertations
Early childhood teachers attend professional development sessions, take college-level courses, or read articles, and will, at some point, be exposed to some concepts found in Vygotsky’s (1986) cultural-historical theory of cognitive development as they are deeply embedded in education standards, professional standards, texts, and journals throughout the country. And yet, some concepts, including scaffolding (Wood et al., 1976), are the result of misinterpretations and the assignment of a label over the years (Gonzales Rey (2008). A largely overlooked concept accurately relating to Vygotsky’s work is intersubjectivity (Trevarthen, 2008), defined as mutual understanding, among teachers and children, for concept development. Intersubjectivity …

Communism And Finance: The Lacanian Non-All And A Critique Of Modern Monetary Theory, Michael Brian Mccarthy
Communism And Finance: The Lacanian Non-All And A Critique Of Modern Monetary Theory, Michael Brian Mccarthy
Theses and Dissertations
Financialization transforms capitalism from the Lacanian “All” to the “non-All”. It can adapt to the infinite variations of class structures under capitalism because it subjects the very form of capitalist accumulation to risk through financial speculation. This variability and durability is potentially of interest to anti-capitalists who seek to avoid the pitfalls of twentieth century communism in the pursuit of an economy not based in exploitation. By investigating the relationship between Modern Monetary Theory and financialization under capitalism, new possibilities for an anti-essentialist and infinitely variable communist non-All begin to emerge.
“Where Food Grows On The Water”: Anishinaabe Wild Rice Restoration, Food Sovereignty, And Decolonization, Rachel Sabella
“Where Food Grows On The Water”: Anishinaabe Wild Rice Restoration, Food Sovereignty, And Decolonization, Rachel Sabella
Senior Theses - Anthropology
In this project I argue that the wild rice restoration projects in the Great Lakes region contribute to the reversal of direct effects of colonization brought on as a result of the Columbian Invasion of the Americas. In doing this, I ask this question: How does this unique array of projects contribute to Indigenous food sovereignty? Wild rice has been a staple of Anishinaabe diet and culture for over two thousand years, but the industrialization of the region led to the decline of wild rice populations and severely diminished the availability of wild rice to the communities that depend on …

There Are No Such Things As Moral Acts: Conceptualizing A New Moral Framework For The Oppressed, Dani Park
There Are No Such Things As Moral Acts: Conceptualizing A New Moral Framework For The Oppressed, Dani Park
Sociology and Anthropology
Both deontological and consequentialist notions of ethics have been duly criticized, the former due to the problem of universal maxims that ignore the delicate intricacies of situations that demand contextual understanding and the latter for ignoring the various moral processes that precede actions. This disillusionment has led some feminists to adopt the ethics of care as a way to subvert patriarchal tones and dehumanizing themes in moral discourse as well a moral relativism that has often been categorized as the ethics of the postmodern age. Yet all normative moral theories, including the ethics of care and moral relativism, posit that …
A Study On The Impact Of Covid-19 On Latinx College Students In The Midwest, Molly Ricci
A Study On The Impact Of Covid-19 On Latinx College Students In The Midwest, Molly Ricci
Sociology and Anthropology
This study proposes to examine how Latinx Illinois State college students who were enrolled in the Spring, 2020 semester experienced the transition to online learning after the onset of the worldwide Coronavirus pandemic. We are interested in investigating how they were affected by the pandemic and how they coped with it in the aftermath of college closures and movement to online learning. We draw on qualitative data which will be collected through a series of 30 total interviews collected in a snowball sample with various starting points. We anticipate that the pandemic affected the students’ learning and college experiences. Given …
Let's Talk About Sex (Work), Baby: Women College Students And Online Sex Work, Courtney Ebersole
Let's Talk About Sex (Work), Baby: Women College Students And Online Sex Work, Courtney Ebersole
Sociology and Anthropology
INTRODUCTION: Online sex work is becoming an increasingly popular avenue for young women to raise capital. I propose to study the motivations of women-identified undergraduate students who engage in self-produced sex work online, in which they are both privileged and subjugated due to intersecting identities. In particular, this study will examine how college women turned to the online platform, OnlyFans, which evolved from a relatively niche website into a mainstream adult entertainment platform that has allowed many college women to earn an income, especially during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, by posting explicit pictures and videos on the OnlyFans platform to …

Sewagescapes: Urban Growth And Topography Of Sewage Districts In Central Illinois, Anastasia Ervin
Sewagescapes: Urban Growth And Topography Of Sewage Districts In Central Illinois, Anastasia Ervin
Sociology and Anthropology
Sewage districts are important municipalities that facilitate urban growth within cities and heavily impact communities. Research regarding the sewage districts is scarce in the modern contexts, and focuses on the biological and chemical processes involved in sanitizing wastewater. This study focuses on districts in Central Illinois and uses the technique of landscape archaeology combined with archival analysis to analyze the economic factors in various parts of the cities and the topography of the districts. The findings of this paper showed that residents with low economic status were pushed toward industrial areas within the cities, where the sewage districts were also …
Cops Vs. Cops: How Does Community-Oriented Policing Coexist With Crime-Fighting Policing, Kian Gaines
Cops Vs. Cops: How Does Community-Oriented Policing Coexist With Crime-Fighting Policing, Kian Gaines
Sociology and Anthropology
INTRODUCTION: Community-Oriented Policing Services (COPS) emerged in response to longstanding criticisms revolving around police accountability and effectiveness. It emphasizes civilian participation in crime-prevention and problem-solving efforts to build trust between the police and minoritized communities with whom they have had an antagonistic relationship. Traditional policing is reactive in nature, with officers acting only after crime has been committed or a call for service has been made; it enforces the law; "legitimizes" use of violence; and emulates military structure and tactics. In this study I describe it as “crime-fighting policing.” COPS programs are embedded within this structure. Unlike traditional policing, COPS …

Who Said It First? : Linguistic Appropriation Of Slang Terms Within The Popular Lexicon, Rachel Elizabeth Laing
Who Said It First? : Linguistic Appropriation Of Slang Terms Within The Popular Lexicon, Rachel Elizabeth Laing
Theses and Dissertations
Linguistic appropriation is an area of study that has been under-researched, even as it has become all the more relevant due to the rapid dissemination of slang and linguistic trends during the digital age. There are clear ties shown between individuals’ and groups’ identity and language. This study specifically examines the appropriation of African American Vernacular English (AAVE) and LGBT language by creating an Acceptability of Appropriation scale and assessing potential relationships between linguistic appropriation, intercultural tolerance, and LGBT tolerance. These results are then examined through the lens of the communication theory of identity (CTI) and potential identity gaps that …

Uncharted Territories: Developing Digital Experiences For Anthropology And Archeological Exploration, Sam Bruner, Ella Jahraus
Creative Technologies
This paper illustrates the development of digital tools to educate and promote anthropological and archaeological work in the Darien Region of Panama. The Darien Region has been underexplored for the last century and is home to the Darien Gap, the only break in the Trans-American Highway, which helps to preserve the indigenous people and animals living there. The authors have collaborated to share experiences of navigating the Darien Gap in Panama through storytelling, adventure, and exploration with digital media. This project resides as a website with a variety of video and game works. Our goal is to have as much …
"Never Again Is Now" Use Of Cultural Frames In A Social Movement Organization, Erik Carlson
"Never Again Is Now" Use Of Cultural Frames In A Social Movement Organization, Erik Carlson
Sociology and Anthropology
The immigrant rights movement is a social movement that has been active in the United States for many decades and adopted as well as changed focus over time. There are many social movement organizations working within this social movement but one of great interest to my research is Never Again Action (NAA). NAA is a national Jewish protest group, which has called for the end to all deportations and the abolition of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). NAA is primarily working from a position of an ally to migrants in a social movement with the aim to further rights for …

The Effects Of U.S. Fiscal Policy On Income Inequality ( 1913 – 2013 ), J.D. Lewis
The Effects Of U.S. Fiscal Policy On Income Inequality ( 1913 – 2013 ), J.D. Lewis
Theses and Dissertations
Income inequality in the United States has reached a level not seen since the Great Depression. Some academics and lawmakers suggest that growing inequality is due to changes in fiscal policy, arguing that cuts in taxes and government spending have reduced the inequality-mitigating effect of fiscal redistribution. While older research provides some support for this argument, newer research suggests otherwise. This disagreement in the literature led me to ask, How has fiscal policy affected income inequality in the United States during the last century? This study seeks to answer this question using data from Piketty et al. (2018), which includes …
The Value Of An Anthropology Degree: Why Undergraduates Major In Anthropology And How It Prepares Them For Life After College, Maria Kitchin
The Value Of An Anthropology Degree: Why Undergraduates Major In Anthropology And How It Prepares Them For Life After College, Maria Kitchin
Theses and Dissertations
“What are you gonna do with that degree?” is a question frequently asked of anthropology majors. This question implies that the value of a college degree is only about getting a job and that the field of anthropology is not useful to that end. In fact, the popularity of anthropology and related liberal arts fields has been declining even as the number of students enrolled at universities has steadily increased. In a moment when the value of a liberal arts degree is questioned in public discourse, I explore the motivations and goals of students who have chosen to study anthropology …
A Comparison Of Financial And Residential Quality Of Life By Housing Provision In Taiwan, Chia-Hang Hsu
A Comparison Of Financial And Residential Quality Of Life By Housing Provision In Taiwan, Chia-Hang Hsu
Theses and Dissertations
This is a study about the relationship in Taiwan between housing provision (homeowner, family-owned, rented, allotted, or other) and quality of life (both financial & residential quality of life), with separate analyses for the average Taiwanese household and for households in the bottom decile of the income distribution. This thesis finds that Taiwanese renters, both in the nationally representative sample and in the bottom decile of household income, are more likely to have a lower financial and residential quality of life compared to those living as homeowners, even after controlling for income, family type, and age of household head. Also, …
Non-Violent Resistance Movements And Substantive Democracy, Jalal Fetrati
Non-Violent Resistance Movements And Substantive Democracy, Jalal Fetrati
Theses and Dissertations
Does the mode of transition to democracy account for the depth of democracy in the post-transition democratic regimes? Whereas previous research has primarily focused on the effects of nonviolent resistance campaigns on improving formal dimensions of democracy, the present study examines whether or not democracies that come into existence as the result of nonviolent resistance campaigns are more successful in deepening democracy than democracies that emerge following violent conflicts or elite-led top-down liberalizations. This paper analyzes all democratic transitions that took place from 1946 to 2010, and relies on V-Dem High-Level Democracy Indices for measuring formal and substantive dimensions of …

“Natural Ties For Patriotic Purposes": The Committee On Public Information, Americanization, And Swedish-American Transnationalism, Race L. Fisher
Theses and Dissertations
The Committee on Public Information (CPI) was the official propaganda agency of the United States during the First World War, seeking to homogenize American public opinion and spread American ideals across the globe. Through a case study of Edwin Björkman’s work among Swedish Americans, this thesis illuminates how the CPI approached its work among immigrants, engaging questions of Americanization and transnationalism. Through an analysis of the John Ericsson League of Patriotic Service and the Scandinavian Bureau—both its domestic and foreign operations—this thesis argues that Edwin Björkman and the CPI promoted cultural pluralism rather than assimilation to a dominant Anglo-American culture. …

Arreidis ( Roots ): Fala Language And It S Quest For Identity, Claudia Sánchez Sánchez
Theses and Dissertations
In this dissertation, native speakers’, and past academics’ views of Fala are explored, along with the sociolinguistic and ideological dimensions of those views. This dissertation also investigates Fala’s orthographic reform, Fala’s recognition as a language at the regional and national level, and the repercussions it has had on research involving Fala. More generally, I present the case of Fala as an example of the effects that language ideologies can have on minority languages that, like Fala, with a small speaker population, may see themselves unrecognized and forgotten by governmental linguistic policy efforts given their size. In order to do this, …

Debtor Spaces: Austerity, Space, And Dispossession In Michigan’S Emergency Management System, Melissa Heil
Debtor Spaces: Austerity, Space, And Dispossession In Michigan’S Emergency Management System, Melissa Heil
Faculty Publications - Geography, Geology, and the Environment
In recent years, debt has become a major focus of geographic research as debt relations have become increasingly central to today’s financialized capitalist economy. This paper bridges two aspects of the debt literature: (1) the emergent literature on debt spatiality, which argues that space plays an active role in the creation and maintenance of debt relations, and (2) the broader literature examining processes of debt-driven dispossession (e.g., foreclosure, eviction, austerity, etc.). Recent literature in geography, led by Harker’s work on debt spaces, has argued that debt should not only be understood as a temporal relation (a promise of future labor) …
