The Hope College Department Of Biology: The First 50+ Years, Christopher C. Barney Jul 2026

The Hope College Department Of Biology: The First 50+ Years, Christopher C. Barney

Faculty Publications

The Hope College Department of Biology was founded in 1899 with the appointment of the first Professor of Biology at Hope, Samuel Mast. During the first 50+ years of the Biology Department, there were eight total faculty members in the department, including Frances Koeman, the first female faculty member in the natural sciences. Four faculty members, Mast, Frank Patterson, Oscar Thompson, and Teunis Vergeer were primarily responsible for developing the department’s curriculum and programs, with Mast and Vergeer also carrying out published research. The department was housed primarily in Van Raalte Hall and the Science Building (now Lubbers Hall) for …

Eudaimonia In Democracy: Finding The Soul In No-Excuse High School English Classrooms, Anna Snader Apr 2026

Eudaimonia In Democracy: Finding The Soul In No-Excuse High School English Classrooms, Anna Snader

25th Annual A. Paul and Carol C. Schaap Celebration of Undergraduate Research and Creative Activity (2026)

This paper explores Alexis de Tocqueville’s observations of American equality in No-excuse high school English classrooms and analyzes how these equality-driven tendencies transform a once liberal study into a servile one. I argue that these practical pedagogies, especially in stringent school models, reverse equality into a cycle of inequity. Through the removal of liberal-based learning, No-excuse schools fail to emphasize purpose and flourishing as an end for their diverse students, and as a result, oppose the primary goal of racial and economic equity. In my research, I propose that No-excuse high schools ought to return English to its liberality through …

Impact Of Memorable Messages About Religion And Adoption, Grace Arakelian, Chloe Warren, Rachel Grimes, Zachary Davis Apr 2025

Impact Of Memorable Messages About Religion And Adoption, Grace Arakelian, Chloe Warren, Rachel Grimes, Zachary Davis

24th Annual A. Paul and Carol C. Schaap Celebration of Undergraduate Research and Creative Activity (2025)

This study examines the impact of memorable messages about adoption and religion on adult adoptees raised in Christian adoptive homes. The study explores how these messages shape adoptees' emotional well-being, identity development, relationships, and religiousness. The study places the findings within existing research on adoption communication, microaggressions, and entrance narratives. Forty-one adult adoptees were interviewed regarding the memorable messages they heard growing up, their interpretations of the messages, and the impact the messages had on their emotional well-being, relationships, identity development, and religious affiliation. Using Tracy's phronetic iterative approach, a qualitative analysis was conducted to identify themes within the data. …

Examining The Validity Of The Polar Grit X Pro And Two Step Tests In Predicting Vo2max, Alex Skupa, Olivia Sprys-Tellner, Madeline Moore, Christian Clark, Fiona Brown Apr 2024

Examining The Validity Of The Polar Grit X Pro And Two Step Tests In Predicting Vo2max, Alex Skupa, Olivia Sprys-Tellner, Madeline Moore, Christian Clark, Fiona Brown

23rd Annual A. Paul and Carol C. Schaap Celebration of Undergraduate Research and Creative Activity (2024)

Smartwatches and submaximal tests, such as step tests, are utilized to predict maximal oxygen consumption (VO2max). The Polar Grit X Pro watch claims to predict VO2max via its Fitness Test Function (FTF). However, this watch and its FTF have not been validated. The purpose of this study was to determine if the Polar Grit X Pro watch, the Queens College Step Test, and the Forestry Step Test accurately predict VO2max in experienced runners aged 18-22 (n=15). Participants included 7 males (20.29 ± 1.11 years) and 8 females (19.63 ± 1.06 years). All participants performed a graded maximal treadmill test, two …

Memorable Messages Regarding Adoption And Religion: Perspectives Of Adult Adoptees, Kendall Maes, Katherine Martin Apr 2024

Memorable Messages Regarding Adoption And Religion: Perspectives Of Adult Adoptees, Kendall Maes, Katherine Martin

23rd Annual A. Paul and Carol C. Schaap Celebration of Undergraduate Research and Creative Activity (2024)

Adoptive parents commonly report religious motivations as a driver in their decision to adopt (Helder & Marr, 2020) and a small literature examines ways that adoptive parents use religious meaning-making to frame their experience as adoptive parents (Firmin, 2017). However, little research has examined the perspective of adult adoptees regarding memorable messages linking religion and adoption that they heard while growing up and the impact of these messages. Adoptees encounter microaggressions, when individuals make assumptions based on the adoptee's race, ethnicity, or background. This has a negative effect on the mental health of adoptees. The current study sought to identify …

My Mother's Milk For Michigan Infants Data Web-Based Application Focus Group Feedback, Delaney Wesolek, Aurore Shima Apr 2024

My Mother's Milk For Michigan Infants Data Web-Based Application Focus Group Feedback, Delaney Wesolek, Aurore Shima

23rd Annual A. Paul and Carol C. Schaap Celebration of Undergraduate Research and Creative Activity (2024)

To reach national expert recommendations of 6 months of exclusive human milk for infants, a multifactorial and interdisciplinary approach is needed to increase lactation outcomes. Mother's Milk for Michigan Infants (MMMI), a nurse-led research team, developed MyMMMI Data, a bilingual (Spanish and English) encrypted web-based smartphone application. MyMMMI Data provides targeted enhanced lactation education; tracks participant-recorded feeding, pumping, diaper, and weight logs; and links participants to online resources. This study aimed to assess the visual appeal, usability, and helpfulness of MyMMMI Data to increase lactation duration. A convenience sample of 25 English (n=15) and Spanish-speaking (n=10) lactating parents (<12 weeks postpartum) and lactation consultants were recruited to participate in an online focus group and complete a demographic survey. During focus groups, the team used a deliberative discussion approach and collected verbal and non-verbal responses while participants created accounts and interacted with MyMMMI Data. Focus group data was examined using a qualitative thematic analysis. Most participants were lactation providers (n=17, 65%) and college-educated (n=10, 58%) with a bachelor's degree. The themes identified were organization, aesthetics, motivational features, account creation/maintenance, and resources. Participants liked the purpose, design, and logging features. Areas of concern were account creation and the tone and nuance of the Spanish translations. Recommendations such as timers and push notifications were specified. Feedback revealed that MyMMMI Data is appealing, simple to use, engaging, and educational, but creating an account and translation tone needs improving. Participants stated they would continue using or recommend MyMMMI Data. Limitations include self-reported data and participant fidelity. Focus groups helped refine this smartphone application to address technical, functional, and language issues. Application and Spanish-language revisions are underway. Although participants requested timers and push notifications, these features are incompatible with the current application platform.

The Local Is Global: Voices Of Leaders In Coffee Justice, Megan Kamper Apr 2024

The Local Is Global: Voices Of Leaders In Coffee Justice, Megan Kamper

23rd Annual A. Paul and Carol C. Schaap Celebration of Undergraduate Research and Creative Activity (2024)

This interdisciplinary project on coffee and justice considered the impact of local choices in West Michigan on global producers of coffee from both a biology and humanities perspective. The humanities part of the project included a series of video interviews that captured the perspectives of local coffee leaders (roasters, coffee shop owners, and lead staff members) in West Michigan who have a passion for justice issues in the coffee industry. In these interviews conducted using oral history methodologies, leaders shared their understanding of justice as it relates to coffee production, processing, and consumption; methods of pursuing ethically-sourced coffee (including Fair …

How Do Just Beliefs Develop? A Systematic Review Of The Research, Allison Bartels, Alexa Burgess, Laniah Dennis, Nhi Hoang, Jae'la Leavy, Erin Moran, Katherine Yakes, Allie Prindle

23rd Annual A. Paul and Carol C. Schaap Celebration of Undergraduate Research and Creative Activity (2024)

Psychological research on the perception of justice has developed the concept of belief in a just world (BJW; Dalbert, 2009). This model includes the General BJW (G-BJW)—people's justice perception of the world in general and Personal BJW (P BJW)—a perception of how fair their personal life is (Likpus et al., 1996; Dalbert, 1999). Adolescence is a crucial time for legal socialization and justice beliefs, yet there is little consensus about the development of these beliefs. The current study aims to conduct a systematic literature review on adolescents' BJW to clarify the existing data on their normative developmental trajectories in youth. …
