A Scoping Review On Governing The Commercial Determinants Of Health: Mechanisms, Tools, And Collaborative Approaches, Alyssa S. Khan, Sierra Arnold, Imran Bari, Isabel G. Long, Nino Paichadze

Student Works

Purpose: The commercial determinants of health (CDoH) are the systems, practices, and pathways through which commercial actors drive health and equity. This review aimed to identify CDoH governance approaches, distinguishing between promoted and criticized approaches.

Design/Methodology/Approach: We conducted a systematic scoping review in PubMed and Google Scholar databases. Relevant grey literature was also identified through citation searching and reference list review. Our search strategy combined terms related to economic and commercial determinants of health, governance models, and health outcomes. English-language publications between January 2000 to December 2025 were included. Relevant data from included sources were extracted and then synthesized using …

Beyond The Bars: Reimagining The Dc Correctional System As The Frontline For Hepatitis C Elimination, Rahimatu Jalloh, Amber Munoz, Riyan Lee, Kristen Martinez, Malia Allen, Gerard Lin

DC Health and Academic Prep Program (DC HAPP)

Hepatitis C is a major public health concern among incarcerated populations, who are infected at rates approximately 10 times higher than the general U.S. population. In Washington, D.C., an estimated 12,700 people are living with hepatitis C, and the District has one of the highest HCV prevalence and mortality rates in the nation. Although hepatitis C is highly curable, many incarcerated individuals do not receive treatment despite having enough time to complete therapy while incarcerated.

This project proposes a comprehensive hepatitis C program for the D.C. prison system that addresses HCV through prevention, intake screening, treatment during incarceration, and post-release …

Understanding Strategies To Translate Knowledge On Hookah Smoking: A Mixed Methods Study, Rabia Mir Oct 2025

Understanding Strategies To Translate Knowledge On Hookah Smoking: A Mixed Methods Study, Rabia Mir

Doctor of Philosophy in Translational Health Sciences Dissertations

Background: One tobacco trend of the 21 st century is smoking hookah or waterpipes. Hookah smoking is thriving on a false widespread belief that it is a safe alternate to smoking cigarettes when in fact it has adverse effects on health and is not safer. Hookah use has especially become popular for young adults and college students.

Study Objectives: The purpose of this study is to generate knowledge to inform university administration (health education personnel and campus policy makers) on what the psychosocial profile of a hookah smoker is, including risk factors, and how they can use messaging to reduce …

Two Influenza Doses By Two: A Quality Improvement Project, Madeline Robinson Bsn,Rn Apr 2025

Two Influenza Doses By Two: A Quality Improvement Project, Madeline Robinson Bsn,Rn

Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects

Background: Healthcare authorities recommend that children under eight receive two doses of the flu vaccine, four weeks apart, during their first vaccination series. Evidence indicates that parent education, nursing education, cognitive reminders, and Electronic Health Record (EHR) reminders provide low-cost ways to enhance vaccination. Despite this, many children remain under-vaccinated from the flu yearly, indicating a need for more effective strategies.

Objectives: This project aimed to increase influenza two-dose series completion among patients aged 6 months to 2 years at a pediatric clinic through parent education, nursing education, cognitive reminders, and EHR reminders. Evaluated outcomes included (1) influenza series completion, …

Does Integration Of Centor Criteria Reduce The Use Of Point Of Care Testing In The Management Of Patients Presenting With Sore Throat In Primary Care?, Hodan Ali Fnp-C, Msc Apr 2025

Does Integration Of Centor Criteria Reduce The Use Of Point Of Care Testing In The Management Of Patients Presenting With Sore Throat In Primary Care?, Hodan Ali Fnp-C, Msc

Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects

Background: Sore throats are one of the most prevalent health issues frequently encountered in primary care settings. Viruses, including Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) and Influenza virus, are commonly implicated as the leading cause of sore throat cases. While bacterial infections represent only 5–15% of sore throat cases, antibiotic prescriptions remain prevalent in bacterial and viral instances. Clinical decision tools like the Centor Criteria (CC) were developed to aid in identifying patients at higher risk of Group A Streptococcus (GAS) infection.

Objective: The purpose of the Quality Improvement (QI) project was to evaluate the impact of the CC tool in reducing …

Reducing Rates And Improving Care Of Incarcerated Pregnant People In Georgia Through The Georgia Women's Care Act: A Policy Analysis And Advocacy Project, Allegra Renee Crews Walker Msn, Cnm Apr 2025

Reducing Rates And Improving Care Of Incarcerated Pregnant People In Georgia Through The Georgia Women's Care Act: A Policy Analysis And Advocacy Project, Allegra Renee Crews Walker Msn, Cnm

Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects

Background: Maternal mortality rate and the rate of incarcerated women are significantly higher in the U.S. than in comparable nations, with Georgia's rates exceeding the national average. The U.S. and Georgia do not meet the internationally accepted standards for women in prisons, the Bangkok Rules. The Georgia Women's CARE Act seeks to reduce rates of incarcerated pregnant individuals by allowing sentence deferment, alternative sentencing, and eliminating or reducing cash bail when appropriate. The bill also establishes standards for tracking pregnant incarcerated women through federal and state prisons and jails.

Aims: This policy analysis and advocacy project aims to bring awareness …

Evaluation Of The Etiology Of Recurrent Pregnancy Loss (Rpl): An Explanatory Mixed Methods Study Exploring Obstetrician Gynecologist Clinical Provider Behaviors And Factors Contributing To Incomplete Evaluations, Emelia Grant

Doctor of Philosophy in Translational Health Sciences Dissertations

Background: More than 50% of patients with recurrent pregnancy loss (RPL) are left without explanations for their losses. However, current research suggests that up to 90% of these individuals could receive explanations through evidence-based laboratory testing. Professional guidelines vary in their recommendations for laboratory testing and RPL evaluation, which can contribute to delayed or fragmented care and untreated maternal disease. Inequities in access to genetic testing further complicate the diagnostic landscape of RPL since payor policies often determine which tests are covered, leaving many patients without access due to financial constraints.

Objective: This study aimed to evaluate current practices of …

Oral Screening Protocol Program: A Doctor Of Nursing Practice Project, Nina Tran Dnp, Fnp-Bc

Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects

Background: An increasing lack of compliance by Registered Nurses (RN) to perform oral health assessments leads to detrimental health concerns. Despite increase of evidence regarding abnormalities, compliance performing health exams are still compromised. Inpatient medical surgical progressive care unit (MSPCU) are even more compromised due to the patient’s comorbidities. Measures to optimize oral health performed by RNs could decrease oral health detriments.

Objectives: The purpose of this project was to develop, implement, and evaluate a program in order to improve oral care by RNs and identify the abnormalities assessed. The primary aim of this project was to implement …
