The Foundation Review
· Graduate programs in nonprofit management increasingly include philanthropic studies in their curricula. However, these programs generally focus on a grant seeker's point of view.
· This case study describes a graduate philanthropic studies course at the University of San Diego developed from a grant maker's perspective. Students partner with a local private foundation to serve as its program officers for a special initiative.
· By becoming grant makers the students experience the intellectual, emotional, and practical challenges of effective grant making. They develop grant making competencies and an appreciation for the art and science of philanthropy. The foundation benefits …

Data Mining The Liberal Arts, Jerry Scripps
Data Mining The Liberal Arts, Jerry Scripps
2014 Conference Presentations
Data mining is one of the tool sets that has been enlisted to help make sense of the massive amount of data that has been collecting over the past few years. Most people associate its use with targeted marketing and government oversight. However, they can also provide scholars in the liberal arts with powerful tools to discover new insights and questions. In this talk, I will discuss some ways in which researchers have recently used data mining to uncover new knowledge in some diverse areas.
Finding Data: The Politics And Magic Of Accessing Capital Punishment Data, Barbara O’Brien
Finding Data: The Politics And Magic Of Accessing Capital Punishment Data, Barbara O’Brien
2014 Conference Presentations
This talk provides an overview of the primary data sources for death penalty research and a glimpse at some of the limitations of working with these sources. Examining each stage of a capital prosecution—from the police investigation of a potentially capital murder to a governor’s decision to grant clemency sparing the life of a death-row inmate—is necessary to understand the process as a whole. But arbitrary factors like local politics, luck, and institutional legacies limit researchers’ ability to collect data about each decision point, making researchers’ attempts to follow cases across multiple stages exceptionally difficult.

A Psychometric Evaluation Of The Integrity Profile 200 (Ip 200) And The Adaptation Thereof For Use In The South African Police Service, Anton Grobler, Renier Steyn
A Psychometric Evaluation Of The Integrity Profile 200 (Ip 200) And The Adaptation Thereof For Use In The South African Police Service, Anton Grobler, Renier Steyn
Papers from the International Association for Cross-Cultural Psychology Conferences
Integrity is an essential element of orderly co-existance and an important facet of professional policing. The objective of this study was to psychometrically evaluate the Integrity Profile 200 (IP 200), an instrument widely used in South Africa, to assess its utility as an integrity measure for use in the South African Police Service. Although the literature indicates that the constructs measured with the IP 200 are sound, an exploratory investigation in the South African Police Service reveals poor reliability and unacceptable inter-item correlations. This suggests poor factorial validity (model fit). Subsequently an exploratory factor analysis (N = 1457) was done …

Restructuring The Michigan Child Care Fund: Reducing Costs And Improving Outcomes, David Wingard, Kieran J. Fogarty, Mary Lagerwey, Joshua Scott
Michigan Journal of Public Health
Michigan’s policy to distribute the Child Care Fund (CCF) to counties at a flat rate of 50% as stated in the Michigan Comprehensive Laws 400.117a provides no structured incentive to the counties to use evidence based practices that are cost-effective for locally based delinquent youth intervention programs. This policy analysis answers the following questions: (1) would retaining delinquent youth in the community produce a cost benefit and/or better outcomes than confinement and (2) is public safety at risk if delinquent youth are retained in the community? Utilizing a policy analysis framework our evidence found that community based services provide better …
The Impact Of Race And Offender Status On Small Business Hiring Decisions, Elle Gray Teshima
The Impact Of Race And Offender Status On Small Business Hiring Decisions, Elle Gray Teshima
Masters Theses
This research explores the impact of race and offender status on the hiring decisions of small business hiring managers. Cover letters, resumes, and surveys were distributed by mail to small business hiring managers in the Grand Rapids area to assess their reactions to and opinions of prospective applicants with varying racial and criminal backgrounds. The null hypothesis was supported. Respondents did not demonstrate a strong overall preference for candidates of a particular race group or offender status. The largest concern with this study is a limited sample size despite a fairly strong response rate. Social desirability bias may also limit …
Naming Race: One Foundation’S Path To A Strategy Of Structural Inclusion And Self- Determination, Lori Bezahler
Naming Race: One Foundation’S Path To A Strategy Of Structural Inclusion And Self- Determination, Lori Bezahler
The Foundation Review
· Common wisdom tells us that by placing people of color in leadership roles in philanthropy, there will be a greater emphasis on issues of racial equity and attention to solutions that are rooted in the experiences of people of color. While diverse leadership is a critical component of inclusion, attention must also be paid to the dynamics of power inherent in the relationship between a philanthropic institution and the community it seeks to serve. Foundations must put in place practices that address the inherent inequities in our sector if we are to contribute to systemic change.
· The Edward …
