Dear Reader,
Thank you for your interest in our team, The ASAP, and our work with the Grand Valley State University Frederik Meijer Honors College. At the time of undertaking the task of reimagining the current Honors College curriculum, we explored the current sentiments of stakeholders, unfulfilled needs, and how other colleges have provided solutions to these needs. Our hope is that you, whoever you may be, become inspired and that ideas from our final prototype become a reality in the Honors College curriculum.
The team working on this project consisted of 6 members, all introduced on the page prior. …
Cold Careers And Occupational Hazards: The Occupational Preferences Of Canadian Serial Killers, Christina E. Ledezma
Cold Careers And Occupational Hazards: The Occupational Preferences Of Canadian Serial Killers, Christina E. Ledezma
Masters Theses
Serial killing is a dark and complex phenomenon. As researchers have begun to recognize that serial killing exists and interacts within a broad modern context, how these factors affect its occurrence has received more attention. This includes serial killers’ occupational preferences and the influence that occupations have on their offending. However, studies on serial killers’ occupational preferences have been limited to the United States and the United Kingdom. This thesis sought to classify the occupational preferences of 36 Canadian serial killers and subsequently analyze how these occupations may have influenced their offending, both instrumentally and psychologically. According to Canada’s 2016 …
Intergenerational Incarceration And Inmate Adjustment, Sarah C. Light
Intergenerational Incarceration And Inmate Adjustment, Sarah C. Light
Masters Theses
Current research has found the impact of incarceration to be far reaching. Families, especially children, often experience the most strain and disadvantage as a result of a parent’s incarceration. This effect can carry into the adult years and influence economic, educational, and behavioral health outcomes. The present study investigates the effect of having a parent or stepparent incarcerated on behavioral and psychological inmate adjustment to the prison environment. Using secondary data from a national data sample of 14,499 inmates, behavioral and psychological adjustment to the prison environment was measured. Results showed no significant effect of second generation prison status on …

Pci: A Reflective Evaluation Framework For Systems Change, Beverly A. Parsons, Huilan Krenn
The Foundation Review
Systemic change involves deep shifts in social norms, beliefs, power, and privilege — and seldom, if ever, follows a straightforward, predictable path. Such change also requires incremental, long-term action and evaluation. To better support systemic change, how might a foundation reframe its approach to evaluation?
This article explores the interconnected dimensions of the PCI Reflective Evaluation Framework, an approach now in prototype form which is grounded in practical thinking about working within complex social systems. This article focuses on its use in advancing racial equity, describing possible applications to integrate a racial equity lens in unpacking and addressing the complexity …
Becoming Strategic: Finding Leverage Over The Social And Economic Determinants Of Health, Douglas Easterling, Laura Mcduffee
Becoming Strategic: Finding Leverage Over The Social And Economic Determinants Of Health, Douglas Easterling, Laura Mcduffee
The Foundation Review
While a number of observers have offered advice to foundations on how to be more effective with the implementation, evaluation, and adaptation of their strategies, there is little guidance on how foundations should go about designing their strategies.
This study fills that gap by analyzing the strategic thinking of health conversion foundations when they determined how they would address various social determinants of health. Based on interviews conducted with the leaders of 33 foundations across the U.S., we identified four strategic pathways: expanding and improving relevant services, creating more effective systems, changing policy, and encouraging more equitable power structures.

Michigan Juvenile Waiver Law: Time For Repeal?, Debra Barnum
Michigan Juvenile Waiver Law: Time For Repeal?, Debra Barnum
SPNHA Review
The sharp increase in violent juvenile crimes from 1988 to 1994 compelled Michigan and almost every other state in the United States to create harsher laws to make it easier to transfer violent juvenile offenders to the adult criminal court. Michigan’s resolution arrived with the passing of Michigan Compiled Law (MCL) 712A.2d, via Public Act 288 of 1996, which abolished the age limit for juveniles to be waived to criminal court for felony crimes. Since MCL 712A.2d was passed, violent juvenile crimes and the number of juveniles transferred to criminal court have markedly decreased. However, does MCL 712A.2d deter juveniles …

Generative Philanthropy: Long-Term Investments In Economic Opportunity, Bob Giloth
Generative Philanthropy: Long-Term Investments In Economic Opportunity, Bob Giloth
The Foundation Review
Generative philanthropy is a collaborative investment practice that tests prototypes and identifies new opportunities that, over time, can focus direction and generate momentum for change. It is an incremental, decentralized approach to investment in communities.
This article’s purpose is to clarify the theory and practice of generative philanthropy and contrast it with other approaches. It provides an in-depth discussion of the meaning of generative philanthropy, offers five examples of the approach related to economic opportunity, and draws lessons for future practice.
Generative philanthropy offers a framework for understanding and enriching philanthropy’s long-term role and collaboration with partners from a developmental …

Why It’S Not Ok For Doctors To Participate In Executions, Robert F. Johnson
Why It’S Not Ok For Doctors To Participate In Executions, Robert F. Johnson
Peer Reviewed Articles
A plea for direct physician participation in executions was presented by Sandeep Jauhar in a New York Times Op-Ed (“Why It’s OK for Doctors to Participate in Executions”—April 21, 2017). Jauhar’s article is not a discussion of the ethics of capital punishment. He describes his own opposition “as a matter of principle, as a doctor.” However, since capital punishment is legal in 31 states, with required physician participation in several, he acquiesces to a utilitarian stance rather than the principled approach he acknowledges is expected of a physician in this circumstance.
Assessing The Predictive Validity Of The Youth Level Of Service Case Management Inventory 2.0 In A Sample Of Rural Juvenile Offenders, Julie Frick
Masters Theses
This study evaluates the predictive validity of a juvenile risk need assessment, the Youth Level of Service/Case Management Inventory 2.0 (YLS/CMI), on a rural population of 215 juvenile offenders using a logistic regression model. The study includes the use of social and demographic variables as control variables, including gender, age, race, special education status, offense type, history of abuse and neglect, and the presence or absence of a police department in the geographic location of crime. The result of the study shows that the YLS/CMI composite risk score significantly predicted recidivism, (x"=19.796, df=1, N=188, p ≤.01). Directions for future research, …
