Eta Sigma Gamma - Georgia Southern University Chapter: Breast Cancer Awareness Health Communication Plan, Jill Johns, Omolola Okunromade
Eagle Showcase: Excellence in Service-Learning (Archived)
The health communication plan was used to evaluate public health communication and advocacy promotion by efficiently increasing awareness about breast health and preventive services such as mammography screening among college students and women eligible for breast cancer screening. The communication plan was targeted towards empowering the Georgia Southern University chapter of Eta Sigma Gamma (ESG) members and other college students to act as health advocates by virtually disseminating information through the Facebook platform to their peer groups and social networks including friends and families in their community.
The purposes of the program evaluation and implementation measurement were to: 1) monitor …

Eagle Showcase: Excellence in Service-Learning (Archived)
American universities are working towards solving food insecurity challenges experienced by members of their campus communities including students, staff, and faculty. Eagle Showcase: Excellence in Service-Learning (Archived)
Through the Spanish Department’s pilot program, Spanish for Community Engagement, I have had the opportunity to serve as a Community Apprentice for Savannah’s nonprofit, Migrant Equity Southeast (MESE). This experience has greatly developed my understanding of the Hispanic community while applying the tools and lessons I have learned in the classroom. Each week, I have gained more experience and awareness of the needs for local immigrant families. I have learned about immigrants’ rights relating to education, housing, interactions with law enforcement, and work. I have researched available resources for immigrants including food banks, legal assistance services, rent assistance, and medical …

Honors College Theses
In this mixed method research study, motivational factors that undergraduate students have for going into different allied health programs after obtaining a degree from Georgia Southern University were examined. The main focus is on occupational therapy, physical therapy, and physician assistant master’s and doctoral programs. One-hundred eleven undergraduate students in exercise science completed the Academic Motivation Scale (AMS) in addition to answering five open-ended questions to gain a deeper understanding of the factors leading exercise science students into the career of their choice. The findings indicated that the desire to know the required material and experience self fulfillment of succeeding …

Unmasking The Monster: Cathy Ames In John Steinbeck's East Of Eden, Julia N. Parker
Unmasking The Monster: Cathy Ames In John Steinbeck's East Of Eden, Julia N. Parker
Honors College Theses
Critics have considered Cathy Ames, the heinous villain of East of Eden, to be John Steinbeck's most complicated character. Although she is at times truly despicable, readers are prejudiced against her before she is even introduced by the narrator, who couches her entire existence as something monstrous and withholds information that might garner her any sympathy until her literal hour of death. Through a study of both Steinbeck's narrative techniques and his letters to his editor about her, we can see that she may not be as villainous as she is presented to be, but she is most certainly …
Analysis And Identification Of Lipolytic Bacterial Species For The Degradation Of Wastewater Lipids, Lindsay C. Smoak
Analysis And Identification Of Lipolytic Bacterial Species For The Degradation Of Wastewater Lipids, Lindsay C. Smoak
Honors College Theses
The aim of this study was to isolate native bacterial strains from the wastewater treatment facilities of Statesboro, GA to identify their lipolytic activities. Obtained bacterial strains were further assessed via morphological and biochemical methods to determine their enzymatic capabilities. Use of the detergent Tween-20 in growth mediums was the first criteria to assess lipase activity, and these isolates were further investigated to quantitatively measure lipase presence and activity. Lipase protein was precipitated and dialyzed to perform a lipase activity assay, followed by Sodium Dodecyl Sulphate–Polyacrylamide Gel Electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE) to confirm the presence of the lipolytic enzymes. Sanger sequencing was …

Participants’ Satisfaction With Functional Treatment Goals, Ricki M. Botsford
Honors College Theses
Goal writing is an important part of treatment and helps guide SLPs' plan for their clients. Goals need to be individualized and relevant to the client’s life. One type of goal that focuses on being specific to the client’s life is functional goals, which is based on the ICF. The LPATS is a method for writing functional goals that was developed with the ICF in mind. The student clinician participants were taught to use LPATS with adult aphasia clients and were surveyed and interviewed on the method’s feasibility. The survey scores were recorded and presented in a graph. The interviews …

Between Us: A Short Story Cycle, Kelly C. Wilcox
Honors College Theses
“Between us” is a short story cycle that alternative between the perspectives of two sisters, Skylar and Harmony, and their love interest–Michael. This thesis explores the various ways in which people differently respond to grief and the impacts grief has on lives, relationships, and families. These stories also review the roles race and identity play in the loss of a parent, specifically when the mother is of one race and the father is of another. This thesis contains the first two stories of the longer, in-progress collection.

Assessing Thematic Correlations Between Extremist Political Organizations Of The Past And Present, Andrew C. Eunice
Assessing Thematic Correlations Between Extremist Political Organizations Of The Past And Present, Andrew C. Eunice
Honors College Theses
The Unite the Right rally in Charlottesville, Virginia, saw more than five hundred protestors teamed with dozens of militia groups, all representing anti-government and white nationalist groups. Also present were over one thousand counter protestors, many representing far-left and antifascist groups, leading to a violent confrontation between the two sides. As we have developed our core themes of what defines the United States of America, we have also fostered a strong division along the way, enough to the point where some individuals feel the necessity to act with violence to “save our nation” so to speak. This conviction exists within …
