Literature Through The Looking Glass: How Fan Fiction Can Save English, Jacob C. Quinn Apr 2023

Literature Through The Looking Glass: How Fan Fiction Can Save English, Jacob C. Quinn

Honors College Theses

English departments face a crisis of student disinterest. Scholars are struggling to sell the study of literature as practically useful in an increasingly STEM-dominated world. The literary realm of fan fiction, which can serve as a guiding star, demonstrates how a community of readers and writers can reach for ideals of democracy and creativity that acknowledge the inherent worth of studying literature while also examining how such study can help students thrive in a world threatened by censorship and authoritarianism. This is a prescription for a total shift in philosophy for the academic study of literature. Such study has been …

This study has theoretical implications for digital content marketing and expands the literature of esports and looks to spark future discussion …

Living With The Stasi: Experiences And Opinions Of East Germans, 1945-90, Thomas M C Roberts Apr 2023

Living With The Stasi: Experiences And Opinions Of East Germans, 1945-90, Thomas M C Roberts

Armstrong Undergraduate Journal of History

This paper discusses how East German citizens felt about the East German Secret Police (Stasi). It focuses on German sentiment and everyday life during East German rule, rather than how Germans retrospectively reacted once the Berlin Wall fell and the true extent of Stasi surveillance had been discovered. It also attempts to disaggregate different demographics of East German society – artists, doctors, the clergy, etc. – and posits that there was no universal ‘East German experience’ of the Stasi. It further explores equally wide range of reasons why an East German citizen might become an ‘inoffizielle mitarbeiter’ – …

But This Rewards Me! An Examination Of Consumer Status And Social Dominance Orientation In The Donation Of Reward Points, Clancy R. Slay, Katharine Howie Apr 2023

But This Rewards Me! An Examination Of Consumer Status And Social Dominance Orientation In The Donation Of Reward Points, Clancy R. Slay, Katharine Howie

AMTP Proceedings 2023

A newer development in rewards programs allows consumers to donate points rather than personally receive benefits. Research on the topic is virtually absent and represents a significant opportunity for worthy causes to receive new streams of financial support. Reward programs are uniquely characterized by hierarchical or “tiered” consumer status. Social dominance orientation represents the degree to which consumers support status inequities and is highly relevant in a reward context. This individual difference characteristic is studied to gain insight into which consumers are willing to donate earned rewards and why. Implications for understanding consumer decision making and encouraging charitable giving are …

Time To Face The Music: Shostakovich’S 7th Symphony And The Siege Of Leningrad, Muhanna Al Lawati Apr 2023

Time To Face The Music: Shostakovich’S 7th Symphony And The Siege Of Leningrad, Muhanna Al Lawati

Armstrong Undergraduate Journal of History

It was in his music that Shostakovich expressed his thoughts and feelings about the radically evolving political landscape of the 20th century. Bolshevism and Stalin’s subsequent inheritance of the USSR promulgated a refashion of the arts, forcing Shostakovich to be an instrument of the state in order to avoid being a victim. It was during Hitler’s Siege of Leningrad where Shostakovich, ironically, did not feel like a victim, but the custodian of a powerful weapon that dared to defy forces beyond his comprehension. In response to Hitler’s Bolshevik crusade, Shostakovich would launch an ideological crusade of his own, composed …

The Sharpeville Massacre, Violence, And The Struggles Of The African National Congress, 1960-1990, Reese W. Hollister Apr 2023

The Sharpeville Massacre, Violence, And The Struggles Of The African National Congress, 1960-1990, Reese W. Hollister

Armstrong Undergraduate Journal of History

During the long process of decolonization in South Africa, the Sharpeville Massacre was a turning point for the African National Congress' decision to begin using violence for the internal resistance to apartheid. Nelson Mandela and the ANC reacted to the Sharpeville Massacre by shifting their methods to incorporate the practicality of anti-colonial violence. In his 1964 "I Am Prepared to Die" speech, Mandela acknowledged that peaceful resistance was met with brutal force, and this could not go on. The ANC continued its strong non-violent resistance while also developing a military wing and conducting sabotage. This essay brings into question the …

Between Censure And Liberalization: The Press And Publishing In Second Empire France, Oana M. Iancau

Armstrong Undergraduate Journal of History

Napoleon III's ambition to construct a paradoxical liberal empire encountered a major obstacle in the realm of the press, which chafed under censure and forced the Emperor to consider the ramifications that absolutism would have for his reign, given France's revolutionary history. The article traces the history of censure under the Second Empire, to identify Napoleon III's motivations for liberalization and its consequences for his regime.

Compassion And National Interest: Race, Culture, And Politics Behind The Reception Of Refugees Of The Ukraine War, Ning Xi Apr 2023

Compassion And National Interest: Race, Culture, And Politics Behind The Reception Of Refugees Of The Ukraine War, Ning Xi

Armstrong Undergraduate Journal of History

This paper aims to analyze the response to and representations of Ukrainian refugees in European countries such as Poland and the reasoning behind it. Generally, Ukrainian refugees have received a very warm and generous welcome, from both the political leaders and ordinary citizens. However, it stands in stark contrast to the way the same countries reacted to refugees fleeing places like Iraq, Syria, and Afghanistan. The primary reasons for the differing attitudes are the perception of Ukraine as a fellow civilized Christian and European nation with strong cultural and historical ties to countries such as Poland, women and children making …

Lafayette, The Thinker, Anna Trull Apr 2023

Lafayette, The Thinker, Anna Trull

Armstrong Undergraduate Journal of History

Between 1775 and 1834, the Marquis de Lafayette played a role in the ongoing development of both the American and French Revolutions. Most previous scholarship about Lafayette highlights his military activities as a major-general in the American Revolution and as General of the National Guard of Paris in the French Revolution. This paper examines Lafayette’s draft of the Declaration of the Rights of the Man and of the Citizen, a list of enslaved peoples that were chosen for Lafayette’s experimental plantation in French Guiana, Lafayette’s membership in the Society of the Friends of Blacks, and letters between Lafayette and America’s …

How “Tweet” Tones Can Explain Consumer Beliefs In Csr, Kristina M. Harrison, Lei Huang Apr 2023

How “Tweet” Tones Can Explain Consumer Beliefs In Csr, Kristina M. Harrison, Lei Huang

AMTP Proceedings 2023

This research examines what can be learned about consumers’ opinions tweeted out about them over social media. The valence and tweet character with the type of CSR/CSR related fraud is specifically examined in order to understand consumers’ beliefs about firm CSR use as well as firm confidence. This was conducted via an experimental design manipulating the type of CSR used and related fraud, and then participants responded to the events via simulated tweets and responded to questions about their beliefs in firms engaging in CSR as well as their overall confidence in a firm. Through applying how individuals assess moral …

Confronting New Realities: Factors Impacting Adoption And Success Of Online Marketing Education In The Caribbean, Neleen S. Leslie-Piper, Celia Mckoy, Petula Senior

AMTP Proceedings 2023

ABSTRACT

COVID-19 was a watershed event in higher education as institutions at all levels were affected. Schools, colleges, and universities were forced to transition to remote or online instruction with varying levels of preparation. While most colleges and universities in the developed world were taken by surprise, they were not completely unprepared, as most institutions already had the infrastructure to facilitate online learning. In fact, some institutions were already offering online or hybrid courses of study. The developing world, and the Caribbean in particular, faced a different challenge. While institutions utilized learning management systems to deliver face-to-face classes, the facilitation …

Choose Your Channels Strategically: How Gender Plays A Role In The Receiving Of Online Brand Activism Ad Campaigns, Jana Stupavsky Apr 2023

Choose Your Channels Strategically: How Gender Plays A Role In The Receiving Of Online Brand Activism Ad Campaigns, Jana Stupavsky

AMTP Proceedings 2023

The successful launch of a new online brand activism ad campaign focused on gender-sensitive issues can be distorted if the content is delivered through poorly thought-out channels. Companies with access to their customer data should learn more about their existing customer base to strategically select the campaign communication channels. When engaging in activism, brands should consider framing their campaign messaging positively and appear authentic. Otherwise, they risk loss in brand equity and corporate reputation. The following analyses present results from a secondary consumer demographic and behavioral characteristics database anchored in source credibility theory. Its goal is to explore differences in …

Fail Fast, Learn Fast: Understanding The Process Of Learning From Failure In Smes, Nikolina Koporcic, David Sjödin, Marko Kohtamäki, Vinit Parida Apr 2023

Fail Fast, Learn Fast: Understanding The Process Of Learning From Failure In Smes, Nikolina Koporcic, David Sjödin, Marko Kohtamäki, Vinit Parida

AMTP Proceedings 2023

‘Fail fast and learn fast’ is a common principle advanced to quickly grow and scale startups and SMEs. However, the literature is lacking detailed insights into how such learning processes are organized. The paper aims to investigate how knowledge-intensive SMEs learn from failures through organizational learning processes. Case studies of three high-tech SMEs that operate in a highly dynamic context are presented. The findings are summarized in the learning from failure process, which includes three phases, each with underlying sub-activities and principles: 1) failure recognition, 2) interactive sensemaking, and 3) organizational adaptation. We summarize our insights into a framework disentangling …

Csr Communication Strategy: Avoiding Consumer Skepticism Considering Product Type And Firm Size, Maisy Dauphinais, Setare Mohammadi, Lin Guo Apr 2023

Csr Communication Strategy: Avoiding Consumer Skepticism Considering Product Type And Firm Size, Maisy Dauphinais, Setare Mohammadi, Lin Guo

AMTP Proceedings 2023

According to prior study, applying a promotional tone may diminish the credibility of the CSR message. To the best of our knowledge, prior studies did not distinguish between luxury and everyday products when determining the most effective technique for highlighting their CSR initiatives and accomplishments. Furthermore, these tactics may need some adjustments for organizations of various sizes, which hasn't been researched before. Results show that three variables—company size (small/large), product type (luxury/fairly priced), and communication style (factual/promotional)—influence customer CSR skepticism. According to our findings, if a firm is big and sells luxury goods, it's ideal to use a factual tone …
