Exploring Public Support For Prison Labor, Omar Morris

Prison labor has long been a central component of the U.S. correctional system, evolving from early penitentiary models to contemporary labor practices that remain legally sanctioned under the Thirteenth Amendment. This study examines the historical development, key legislation, and modern realities of prison labor, emphasizing its economic, ethical, and rehabilitative implications. Using survey data from a nationally representative sample, the study assesses public attitudes toward mandatory prison work, fair wages for incarcerated individuals, and financial obligations such as medical copays and communication fees. Findings reveal that while the public generally supports prison labor, opinions diverge on compensation and economic burdens …

The lone star tick, Amblyomma americanum, is the most common tick in Georgia. It is mainly known as an Ehrlichia spp. vector, but its microbiome can be diverse, depending on geography, developmental stage, and season. Little is known about bacterial diversity in ticks from the southeastern U.S. A Nanopore MinION sequencer was used for a preliminary analysis of the bacterial microbiome in A. americanum from the Statesboro region. DNA was extracted from 39 nymphs, 35 males, and 39 females. DNA samples were pooled by month of collection and life stage/sex, amplified with barcoded 16SrDNA primers, and sequenced. Approx. 77% …

Strepsiptera are generally described as parasitic castrators as they cause the reproductive death of the hosts. In southeast Georgia, only a handful of paper wasps are hosts for twisted-winged parasites. One such species, Polistes metricus, is parasitized by a twisted-winged parasite, Xenos peckii. Previous studies document that host survivorship at most developmental stages was not largely influenced by the presence of X. peckii. To determine if X. peckii can affect their host’s ability to survive and reproduce, we dissected P. metricus to determine ovary development and the presence of X. peckii parasites. Parasite presence had no effect on the host’s …

Contextual understanding is a significant challenge of Large Language Models (LLMs), which are typically trained on general-purpose datasets. Due to this, LLMs fail to capture nuanced or domain-specific information and may struggle to interpret user queries accurately. Consequently, prompt engineering can become complex in automating, and LLMs are prone to “hallucinating”—generating random or irrelevant texts—when they lack sufficient context. This undermines their ability to provide focused, accurate responses. This qualitative study explored the lived experiences of student veterans with support services at their higher education institutions. Using a phenomenological design, it provided space for student veterans to share their stories and amplify their voices. Grounded in Astin’s (1984) theory of student involvement, the study conducted eight in-depth interviews with student veterans. The findings aligned with the theoretical framework and contributed to the literature on student veterans in higher education. Six key themes emerged: early preparation and planning for college, the impact of faculty interactions, peer connections with fellow veterans, understaffing of campus military-affiliated offices, awareness and use of …

Sand dunes provide critical ecosystem services including storm protection by acting as natural barriers. However, these systems are threatened by human disturbance, particularly pedestrian traffic occurring at footpaths that damages dune vegetation. Vegetation is essential to dune growth and stability, as dune plants trap and bind sand. When trampled, dunes become more vulnerable to erosion and less effective at providing coastal protection. On Tybee Island, Georgia—a popular tourist destination—a vegetated dune was constructed in 2020 to enhance storm protection. Saltwater intrusion, the movement of ocean water into freshwater, is a significant global threat to coastal freshwater ecosystems linked to both climate change and anthropogenic influences. Alterations to coastal landscapes can increase intrusion. Sapelo Island has an extensive history of agricultural landscape alteration, but freshwater flow decline increased the movement of saltwater inland by tides. Intrusion is expected to increase in frequency and magnitude due to rising sea levels and storms. Salinization puts inland habitats and the humans relying on them at risk. As saltwater is denser than freshwater, more pressure is placed on benthic organisms (i.e., macroinvertebrates) that will …

This paper explores the development of my painting and printmaking practice through the lens of process, artistic influence, and creative community. At the heart of my work is a dedication to mark-making in printmaking and painting as gesture and authorship and as a visual language shaped by process, scale, layering, and texture. My work is influenced by artists such as Jackson Pollock, Mark Rothko, Wayne Thiebaud, and Peter Max, as well as by my personal history with music. The paper reflects on how process, interdisciplinary influence, and artistic dialogue shape a practice rooted in both personal exploration and discovery.

Among the myriads of factors affecting the range, the coefficient of drag and the required power to overcome it are noteworthy. Teaching Cuba In Georgia Today, Eric Kartchner

The Coastal Review

Increasing numbers of disabled and neurodivergent students are enrolling in postsecondary institutions, including teacher preparation programs. Although teacher educators strive to prepare their students to use strategies and provide support effectively in their future classrooms, many of these educators need tools to offer comparable services to disabled and neurodivergent preservice teachers. Specifically, disabled and neurodivergent preservice teachers have reported barriers to disclosing their disabilities and receiving access to needed accommodations. Instead, they report feeling scrutinized as to whether they are capable of being teachers due to their disability. The Council for Exceptional Children (CEC) and the National Council on Teaching Mathematics (NCTM) released a joint statement on the importance of preparing special education teachers to teach mathematics (NCTM & CEC, 2024). They provided implications for institutions of higher education with teacher preparation programs, one of which included requiring special education majors to take a minimum of one mathematics course with mathematics content directed specifically to PK-12 mathematics and include field-based learning opportunities within that course. This unique challenge case study is designed to describe the experiences of two special educator preparation faculty members serving at Historically Black Universities with small, evolving special educator preparation programs.
