Survey Distribution Policy Jan 2021

Survey Distribution Policy

Enrollment, Marketing & Student Success Policies

Georgia Southern University often receives requests from on-campus and off-campus entities for the distribution of surveys to various populations (e.g. students or subsets thereof, faculty or subsets thereof, and/or staff or subsets thereof). In order to avoid “survey fatigue” and reduce duplication, enhance survey effectiveness and preserve population resources, an organizational framework for survey distribution is necessary.

Covid-19 Exposures And Health Alerts (12/28/2020- 1/3/2021), Georgia Southern University

Covid-19 Pandemic: News & Publications (Archived)

The report below shows an anticipated rise in confirmed and self-reported cases after completion of the second full week of classes on our campuses. As an institution of nearly 27,000 students and 3,350 employees, positive reports represent a very small proportion of our overall university population. These cases are primarily concentrated within the student population on the Statesboro campus. While we have been pleased with how the university community is complying with public health guidelines on our campuses, we must remain vigilant in our efforts if we want to continue the semester as we have started.

Mentoring In A Cooperative Learning Classroom, Jacqueline Gilbert Jan 2021

Mentoring In A Cooperative Learning Classroom, Jacqueline Gilbert

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

This manuscript introduces an experiential model of cooperative learning, and a public/private partnership between industry and higher education—one that included mentors as an integral part of the classroom experience. Each of thirty-seven students in a Principles of Management Experiential Learning class was assigned an experienced executive/professional who served as their mentor. These individuals had experience congruent with students’ career goals and aspirations, and they were able to help them craft a reflective end-of-term paper. Interview data from mentors illustrates the type of career guidance and advice they offered to their mentees, and why they thought that mentoring was important for …

Development And Use Of Open Educational Resources In Research Methods For Psychology, Stephanie Da Silva Phd, Katherine White Jan 2021

Development And Use Of Open Educational Resources In Research Methods For Psychology, Stephanie Da Silva Phd, Katherine White

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

Research methods course(s), a standard in psychology programs, often use multiple textbooks to address conceptual and data-analytic information. This study involved transitioning from traditional textbooks to open educational resources in a research methods course. Two psychology instructors, each offering course sections, identified open-access textbooks that aligned with course learning objectives and developed instructional materials to accompany those textbooks. All materials were organized publicly in an institutional subject guide. We compared students’ grades, pretest-posttest scores, and survey reports of resource use and evaluation in a spring semester, when traditional/costly textbooks were used, to the following fall semester, when no-cost textbooks were …

Educators’ Use And Views Of Simulations As Teaching Tools Within A Discipline: The Example Of Hospitality And Tourism, Cynthia S. Deale, Stephanie Bae, Seung-Hyun Lee Jan 2021

Educators’ Use And Views Of Simulations As Teaching Tools Within A Discipline: The Example Of Hospitality And Tourism, Cynthia S. Deale, Stephanie Bae, Seung-Hyun Lee

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

This Scholarship of Teaching and Learning study investigated hospitality faculty members’ perceptions and use of industry-related simulations in hospitality and tourism education to help the authors understand how simulations are and can be used as educational tools. Using learning engagement theory as a framework, respondents to a survey perceived that simulations help students develop decision-making skills, increase problem-solving skills, integrate knowledge from other classes, learn to work with others, and link theory to practice, and noted that simulations are fun to use. A significant positive relationship was found between the number of semesters educators have used simulations and their satisfaction …

Phrasing Feedback To Improve Students' Writing In A Large First-Year Humanities Course, Mairi Cowan, Tyler Evans-Tokaryk, Abdullah Farooqi, Michael Kaler, Allison Graham Jan 2021

Phrasing Feedback To Improve Students' Writing In A Large First-Year Humanities Course, Mairi Cowan, Tyler Evans-Tokaryk, Abdullah Farooqi, Michael Kaler, Allison Graham

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

On a revise-and-resubmit assignment in a large introductory History course, students were provided with feedback that was phrased either as questions, statements, or imperatives. This study examines which form was most likely to lead to improvement in the students’ writing. Generalized estimating equations (GEE) were used to analyze a data set comprising 669 individual pieces of feedback on 67 sets of papers. Researchers found that, overall, students were most likely to implement feedback phrased as imperatives and least likely to implement feedback phrased as questions, and that the likelihood shifted somewhat depending on which aspect of writing was being commented …
