Investigating The Effects Of Tax Cuts On Capital Expenditures As An Alternative To Restore The United States Economy From The Covid-19 Pandemic, Carlos M. Parodi
Investigating The Effects Of Tax Cuts On Capital Expenditures As An Alternative To Restore The United States Economy From The Covid-19 Pandemic, Carlos M. Parodi
Honors College Theses
The Corona Virus has interrupted several years of strong economic expansion in the United States. In fact, it has disrupted the lives of every single person and organization in the world. After reaching its peak in mid-April, the rate of cases and related deaths has finally started to slow down. The U.S. Government passed three different pieces of legislation to address the effects of the virus. It is now considering legislation (referred to as Phase IV) to accelerate the return of the U.S. economy to its pre-pandemic level. Studies have shown that capital expenditures have been essential during periods of …

A Study Of The Efficiency And Effectiveness Of The First Four Iterations Of Sierpinski Carpet Fractal-Like Fins At Increasing Angles In Natural Convection, Sophia N. Fleri
Honors College Theses
Fractal geometries have been found in several studies to increase a fin’s thermal performance. Both the reductions of volume and mass accompanied by an increase in performance are desirable to prevent malfunction of the device through passive heat dissipation. The Sierpinski carpet fractal pattern, beginning with a basic square geometry in which an increasing number of perforations are incorporated through each successive iteration, reduces the fin’s mass while increasing its surface area simultaneously; this increase in surface area increases the rate of heat transfer experienced across the fin. The first four iterations of the Sierpinski carpet pattern, each with identical …

Steady Heartbeat: Field And Laboratory Studies Indicate Unexpected Resilience To High Temperatures For The Ribbed Mussel Geukensia Demissa, Ashlyn N. Smith Ms.
Honors College Theses
Salt marshes are important ecosystems found along the coast of Georgia. Salt marshes are hosts to diverse organisms that interact with each other to promote many ecosystem services, such as storm buffering and flooding, and absorption of excess nutrients. Among these diverse organisms is the ribbed mussel, Geukensia demissa. Mussels are a foundation species in this intertidal landscape, and without them the whole salt marsh would be negatively affected. The purpose of this investigation was to explore the thermal stress response of G. demissa to rising temperatures. Mussels were collected from three locations that were landlocked, close to a …

Transgressing For Access: A Call For Higher Education Reform To Support Black Females In Stem, Beverly A. King Miller
Transgressing For Access: A Call For Higher Education Reform To Support Black Females In Stem, Beverly A. King Miller
Elementary & Special Education: Faculty Publications
There continues to be the global demand for a qualified workforce in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). Yet, for Black females in South Africa this means combating the legacy of Apartheid to overcome challenges due to race and gender. This paper draws data from a qualitative study of four Black South African females in STEM careers. Through their voices they identify ways in which they transgress gender and race to gain access to STEM careers. Further, their families transgress cultural norms in order to offer support for unfamiliar career pathways. Their narratives call for a transformative change in higher …

Design And Demonstration Of Automated Technologies For The Fabrication And Testing Of Pem Fuel Cell Systems, Vladimir Gurau, Daniel Cox, Devin C. Fowler, Matthew Carter, Adedayo Ogunleke
Manufacturing Engineering: Faculty Publications (2015-2023)
This paper describes the research efforts at Georgia Southern University to develop robotic technologies for the fabrication of fuel cell components and stacks, as well as the design and fabrication of a High Temperature Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cell (HT-PEMFC) power system to be used as motive power and auxiliary power unit (APU) for a long range, unmanned, fully autonomous forest rover. The paper describes a manufacturing workcell consisting of a Yaskawa Motoman SDA5F dual arm robot with machine vision used for sorting, reorientation and stacking fuel cell components in presenters in preparation for their subsequent robotic assembly in fuel …

Symbolic Construction Of Matrix Functions In A Numerical Environment, Evan D. Butterworth
Symbolic Construction Of Matrix Functions In A Numerical Environment, Evan D. Butterworth
Honors College Theses
Within the field of Computational Science, the importance of programs and tools involving systems of differential equations cannot be overemphasized. Many industrial sites, such as nuclear power facilities, are unable to safely operate without these systems. This research explores and studies matrix differential equations and their applications to real computing structures. Through the use of software such as MatLab, I have constructed a toolbox, or collection, of programs that will allow any user to easily calculate a variety of matrix functions. The first tool in this collection is a program that computes the matrix exponential, famously studied and presented by …

Assessment Of The Toxicological Effects Of Cnt-Ab In Mice Followed By Microwave Hyperthermia 14 Days Post Treatment., Andrew C. Mixson
Assessment Of The Toxicological Effects Of Cnt-Ab In Mice Followed By Microwave Hyperthermia 14 Days Post Treatment., Andrew C. Mixson
Honors College Theses
Serious side effects and treatment resistance are the main impediments to successful cancer therapy. A variety of nanoparticles have been used for localized, site-specific treatment that prevent or circumvent these impediments. Microwaves alone have been previously used for thermal ablation of various tumors, setting precedence for their successful use in live organisms. In cell culture studies, it has been observed that multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) instantly and efficiently absorb microwaves, causing hyperthermia of cells in direct contact with them with unnoticed harm to other cells. It is hypothesized that a treatment can be developed based on a safe microwave heating …

A Study Into The Continuation Of Work Life Balance, Hayley Fritch
A Study Into The Continuation Of Work Life Balance, Hayley Fritch
Honors College Theses
Within the field of Human Resource Management, the topic of work-life balance has been of interest as a way to maintain satisfied employees by companies and reduce burnout for individuals. This study aims to develop a deeper understanding in the area of work-life balance. The current research shows gaps in the relationship between the actions of college students and the work-life balance they achieve in their future career. This study shows how a college student’s propensity to work-life balance can affect their future balance between work and home and if college students have the propensity to think about their future …

Project Venona: Breaking The Unbreakable Code, Cassandra Hankin
Honors College Theses
Project VENONA was a top-secret counterintelligence program initiated by the United States Army Signals Intelligence Service during World War II. VENONA was established to decipher intercepted Soviet communications and break the “unbreakable” Soviet code system. Examining Project VENONA and its discoveries is vital to understanding the history of the early Cold War.
