Examining Personal And Structural Mental Healthcare Disparities In Transgender And Gender Non-Conforming Individuals, Aiden W. Mintah-Jumbo

Honors College Theses

The current research evaluates the mental healthcare barriers that exist for transgender/ gender non-conforming individuals versus cisgender individuals in the context of anxiety and depression. We hypothesized that non-cisgender people would have greater healthcare disparities than compared to cisgender people. The importance of this research is to further understand the healthcare gap between transgender/ gender non-conforming communities and cisgender communities. Participants (n = 532) took an online survey where they were asked a series of questions relating to how barriers to care impact mental health domains. In recent years, music has increasingly been acknowledged as an effective nonpharmacological intervention in dementia care. However, there are often questions as to the evidence behind why music works, the tangible benefits, and the best ways to implement music in this setting. Research confirms that music, especially active engagement in music, can greatly improve the quality of life of people living with Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia. This workshop will explore multiple approaches to using music with people with dementia, including music listening, music recreation, and music therapy. Middle Grades & Secondary Education: Faculty Publications

Water-literate individuals effectively reason about the hydrologic concepts that underlie socio-hydrological issues (SHI), but functional water literacy also requires concomitant reasoning about the societal, non-hydrological aspects of SHI. Therefore, this study explored the potential for the socio-scientific reasoning construct (SSR), which includes consideration of the complexity of issues, the perspectives of stakeholders involved, the need for ongoing inquiry, skepticism about information sources, and the affordances of science toward the resolution of the issue, to aid undergraduates in acquiring such reasoning skills. In this fixed, embedded mixed methods study (N = 91), we found SHI to hold great potential as meaningful …

The successful reduction in prevalence rates of HIV in many countries is attributed to control measures such as information and education campaigns (IEC), antiretroviral therapy (ART), and national, multinational and multilateral support providing offcial developmental assistance (ODAs) to combat HIV. However, control of HIV epidemics can be interrupted by limited random supply of ODAs, high poverty rates and low living standards. This study presents a stochastic HIV/AIDS model with treatment assessing the roles of IEC, the supply of ODAs and early treatment in HIV epidemics. UNESCO 2030 (UNESCO, 2015) sustainable development goal 4 highlights the need for inclusive educational practices in order to dismantle the present exclusionary practices in education. These goals are designed to ensure that by 2030, benchmarks are met requiring all children with diverse socio- economic, race and gender backgrounds receive an equitable and quality education. To meet the needs for inclusive educational practices two areas in education are under consideration: teacher training and curriculum development and implementation. This presentation will highlight the work by two professors working with their students to promote an inclusive social justice education and curricula framework.

Riegle-Crumb, King, and Irizarry (2019) indicate that African-American, LatinX, and White college first-year students declare an interest in STEM fields at roughly equivalent rates but African American and Latinx students are less likely to persist in attaining STEM degrees. Oyserman et al. (2011) further contextualize this discrepancy by noting that students might need help in implementing pathways from aspirations to academic outcomes. A multi-year intervention aimed at supporting undergraduate African American and Latinx students in STEM seeks to usher students along pathways towards STEM degrees by encouraging development of a community of practice and engagement in practical, concrete experiences that …
