Home Range, Reproduction, And Habitat Characteristics Of The Female Gopher Tortoise (Gopherus Polyphemus) In Southeast Georgia, Maggie Jo Mitchell

The relationship among female gopher tortoise home range, size, reproduction, habitat characteristics and season were studied for a two-year period (May 2002-May 2004) on Fort Stewart Army Reserve (FSAR) in southeast Georgia. Tortoises were studied in four sectors or regions on Ft. Stewart that contain the longleaf pine/wiregrass ecosystem. Vegetation characteristics were consistent between the different areas that tortoises inhabited. Soil types were similar between areas and consisted of Blanton, Bonifay, Fuquay, Albany Sand, Chipley, Echaw, Centenary, Stilson and Tifton soil types. This study was conducted to identify Georgia high school principals' perceptions of student diversity. The student demographics of many Georgia school districts and schools are changing rapidly, while some school districts and schools have not experienced much, if any, demographic change. As a result, it is important for principals to be aware of what other principals perceive as advantages and disadvantages, the types of policies/programs that impact principals in regard to student diversity as well as to be familiar with artifactual evidence that may represent an appreciation or awareness of student diversity. Beaver (Castor Canadensis) Impacts On Herbaceous And Woody Vegetation In Southeastern Georgia, Jessica R. Brzyski

North American beavers are considered ecosystem engineers. Their activities can quickly and drastically alter habitat properties and perhaps permit highly aggressive colonizing plants, notably non-native species, to invade and potentially dominate. This study examined if beavers in southeastern Georgia have an effect on the terrestrial plant community. Sampling areas included beaver modified (N=9) and nearby but relatively non-impacted riparian habitat (N=9) in a matched pairs design. Vegetation surveys were performed in spring and summer. Species richness was calculated for herbs, vines, woody seedlings, and woody vegetation. Richness of herbaceous vegetation was higher at distances closer to shore while richness of …

Effects Of Fire On The Ectoparasites Of Small Mammals In Longleaf Pine (Pinus Palustris) Habitats, Todd N. Nims

I tested the hypothesis that fire significantly decreases prevalence and abundance of ectoparasites and therefore increases the condition of small mammals in longleaf pine habitats. I trapped two areas with paired burned and unburned sites in east central Georgia during 2002 2003. I collected 190 mammals from 9 species and recovered 32 ectoparasite species. I found little overlap in mammal species between paired sites. The overall chance for any mammal of having an ectoparasite was significantly greater on unburned sites (87.7% prevalence on burned vs. 100% unburned). There was no significant relationship between the number of individual ectoparasites on a …
