Validation Of Inverse Seasonal Peak Mortality In Medieval Plagues, Including The Black Death, In Comparison To Modern Yersinia Pestis-Variant Diseases, Mark R. Welford, Brian H. Bossak

Background: Recent studies have noted myriad qualitative and quantitative inconsistencies between the medieval Black Death (and subsequent ‘‘plagues’’) and modern empirical Y. pestis plague data, most of which is derived from the Indian and Chinese plague outbreaks of A.D. 1900615 years. Previous works have noted apparent differences in seasonal mortality peaks during Black Death outbreaks versus peaks of bubonic and pneumonic plagues attributed to Y. pestis infection, but have not provided spatiotemporal statistical support. Our objective here was to validate individual observations of this seasonal discrepancy in peak mortality between historical epidemics and modern empirical data.

I was interested in whether the inclusion of a service-learning experience would affect students’ attitudes and values about the environment. To investigate this question, I incorporated a service-learning project into the laboratory portion of one of the two sections of my non-majors biology course, and kept the lecture portions of the course identical. Several methods were used to assess the impact of the service-learning experience: the New Ecological Paradigm survey was used to measure changes in students’ attitudes and values about the environment at the beginning and end of the semester, and reflective writing assignments were used throughout the semester …

The Role Of Scholarship Of Teaching In Faculty Development: Exploring An Inquiry-Based Model, Pamela Adams

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

This paper describes a study in which professors explored and refined their perspectives about pedagogy and university teaching. Results show that collaborative, inquiry-based faculty development influenced their growth as effective educators. More frequent feedback from students and colleagues was seen as a major factor in helping professors improve, while a sustained focus on professional inquiry was seen to contribute to professors’ deeper understanding of the intricacies and complexities of effective university teaching.

BACKGROUND. Many studies have documented the correlation of learning style and academic success for medical students. However, few have investigated the intersection of academic preparedness and students’ preference for information processing. This study tested the hypothesis that learning style preference differs among medical students grouped by admission status. It also analyzed markers of academic success and their correlation with various learning styles. METHODS. First year students from six entering classes at one medical school regional campus were grouped into regular and alternate admission pools. Peer bias is recognised as a primary factor in negative student perceptions of peer assessment strategies. This study trialled the use of classroom response systems, widely known as clickers, in small seminar classes in order to actively engage students in their subject’s assessment process while providing the anonymity that would lessen the impact of peer pressure. Focus group reflection on the students’ impressions of the peer evaluation process, the use of clickers, and their anxieties about potential peer bias were analysed in the light of the results of teacher and class evaluations of each individual student presentation. This paper reports the findings of a study of the learning styles of students in the operations management class at a regional comprehensive university in southeastern United States. Extant learning styles are found to be highly diverse and differ by student gender. However, in contrast to at least one prior study, the learning styles of our respondents did not differ by student major. Five areas of opportunity for future research arising from the results of this study are identified in the paper’s conclusion.

We begin this essay with a brief description of the four-year multidisciplinary faculty development project in which we participated. After describing some of the successes of the project, we argue that three elements of our approach were integral to the increases in student learning that were facilitated by project participants: (1) The Learning Question, Disciplinary Expertise, and Foundational Learning Theory, (2) Collaboration and Evaluation, and (3) Public Support and Professional Acknowledgement.

Anderson's Feed show their adolescent protagonists' struggles with identity formation, consumerism, and the adult world. In order to address power relationships, the two novels address the rise of a global electronic and print media system that collapses traditional notions of time and space and the excessive consumption associated with the culture such a system creates. Discrepant Teaching Events: Using An Inquiry Stance To Address Students' Misconceptions, Judith Longfield

Science instructors have long known that the use of discrepant events with unexpected outcomes is a powerful method of activating thinking. A discrepant teaching event is similar to a discrepant science event in that it vividly portrays what is often an abstract construct or concept and has an unexpected outcome. The unexpected outcome creates what Piaget (1971) refers to as disequilibrium, thereby uncovering students’ naïve conceptions and tacit beliefs about the concept being studied. Many university faculty value email as an important tool for communicating with colleagues, but express frustration with a high incidence of unprofessional email correspondence from students. The goals of this study were to document the frequency of specific formatting mistakes that contribute to faculty’s unfavorable perception of student emails and to determine if training could reduce these errors. Flea And Louse Infestations Of Cotton Rats (Sigmodon Hispidus) In The Southeastern United States, Alena E. Aviles

Ectoparasites were collected from cotton rats (Sigmodon hispidus) in 20 sites in the Southeastern United States (FL, GA, MS, NC and SC). Prevalence and mean intensity of parasitism by sucking lice (Anoplura) and fleas (Siphonaptera) of cotton rats were recorded at all sites. The geographical distribution of S. hispidus and its main louse and flea ectoparasites range from the neotropical region to the southeastern USA. It was hypothesized that the abundance of the cotton rat associated louse (Hoplopleura hirsuta) and flea (Polygenis gwyni) would increase the further south and closer to the distribution centers of each of these ectoparasite species. …
