Carbon Dioxide Sensitivity In Two Disjunct Populations Of The Pitcher-Plant Mosquito, Wyeomyia Smithii, Daniel L. Allen Jr.

The pitcher-plant mosquito, Wyeomyia smithii, utilizes carbon dioxide receptors primarily on their maxillary palps to seek potential hosts for blood meals. Two disjunct populations of W. smithii were analyzed to test for differences in carbon dioxide sensitivity that would correlate to varying levels of autogeny, ranging from the autogenous Northern populations (from North Carolina through Canada) to the anautonenous Southern populations (Florida – Louisiana), with the Georgia population exhibiting a shift from autogeny to anautogeny over the past two decades. Encapsulation of a model anti-cancer drug, 5-Fluorouracul (5-FU) into biocompatible core-shell nanofibers of polycaprolactone (PCL) nanofibers was fabricated using a coaxial electrospinning process. Our work aims to solve these issues using a novel method of fabrication of fibers featuring confinement of drugs within a biodegradable core-shell structure, thereby permitting sustained release of drugs to specific sites of treatment, such as tissues affected with tumor cells. The coaxial electrospinning was performed using a sheath polymer solution consisting of a 14 wt% PCL solution and a 5 wt% solution of 5-FU as the core solution. Past research has shown that students with a learning disability (LD) diagnosis face more obstacles that just their disability. The purpose of this study was twofold. The first purpose was to examine the perceived social stigma that students with a learning disability experience in college. The second purpose was to assess the existing stereotypes about students with a learning disability. Four undergraduate students with a LD and 101 students without a LD completed a questionnaire designed to assess the prevalence of stereotypes, metastereotypes, and stigmas on the college campus in regards to those with a learning disability. Tetrakis (hydromethyl) phosphonium chloride (THPC) is a tetrakis (hydromethyl) phosphonium salt commonly used by the textile industry and is polymerized onto cotton fabrics to provide a flame-retardant finish. Traces of THPC were found in the Ogeechee River, a 294 mile-long black river in Georgia, and could have been a toxin contributing to the mass killing of aquatic animals in May 2011. THPC has been known to be carcinogenic and cause other systemic toxicity in various mammalian animals. Bioinorganic photochemistry is a rapidly advancing research area in the field of bioinorganic chemistry. This project seeks to build upon the growing field by synthesizing and analyzing new photodynamic therapy (PDT) agents. There are three major generations of PDT agents. The first generation consists of chemically modified natural hematoporphyrins, which are not of great interest in the phototherapeutic field due to their low distinguishability between tumor cells and healthy cells, and extended skin photosensitivity in patients. Iron is an essential mineral that plays a key role in the oxygen transporting molecule hemoglobin. Iron also helps muscles store and use oxygen. Excess iron in the body can attract electrons, creating harmful oxygen radicals. Iron overload can be caused by several factors such as genetics, age, gender, and having received multiple red blood cell transfusions. Excess iron can lead to many diseases, such as arthritis, liver cirrhosis, heart disease, and several forms of cancer. Scanning Electron Micrographs were prepared of four morphologically diagnostic regions (dorsal capitulum, ventral capitulum, scutum, leg coxae) for the larval stage of the 16 species of ixodid (hard) ticks known to parasitize humans in the USA. These species are: Amblyomma americanum, A. maculatum, A. mixtum, A. tuberculatum, Dermacentor albipictus, D. andersoni, D. occidentalis, D. variabilis, Haemaphysalis leporispalustris, Ixodes angustus, I. cookei, I. pacificus, I. scapularis, I. spinipalpis, I. texanus, and Rhipicephalus sanguineus. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between competitive trait-anxiety and optimism in college students. A sample of 112 undergraduate students from a university in the Southeast completed three questionnaires: a demographics survey, a Life Orientation Test and a Sport Competition Anxiety Test. The data werethen analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics to determine if a relationship exists. The hypothesis was that there would be a negative correlation between competitive trait anxiety and optimism levels in college students. Following a meal, an animal can exhibit dramatic shifts in its physiology that can result in rapid growth of the gut and heart, as well as a massive (>40-fold) increase in metabolic rate associated with the energetic costs of processing the meal. However, little is known about the effects of digestion on an important physiological trait: immune function. Thus, I tested the following competing hypotheses. First, digesting animals may upregulate their immune systems due to increased microbial exposure from ingested food. The purpose of experiment one was to test the effects of drink consumed (glucose, artificial sweetener, or water) and stimuli (food or non-food) on cognitive conflict. Glucose has been known to better cognitive functioning, and preoccupation with food worsens cognitive functioning on a food-related task. We hypothesized that participants who received glucose and non-food stimuli will perform best on the cognitive tests, and participants who received aspartame and food-stimuli will perform worst on the cognitive tests. The purpose of this study was to investigate the level of influence parents had on the career decision making process for their children who are pre-service teachers. Participants were pre-service teachers in their final year in the teacher education program. Data were collected using both a survey and interviews. The data were then divided into two groups consisting of responses from the pre-service teachers who are children of educators and those who are children of non-educators. In comparing these two groups, this study revealed that the children of educators indicated a slightly greater parent influence on their career choices than …

Volunteerism in the undergraduate years can enhance students’ academic development, civic responsibility, and life skills (Astin & Sax, 1998). Whether a student volunteers in high school can be a predictor of continued volunteerism in college and later in life (Planty & Regnier, 2003; Astin & Sax, 1998). My research is interested in examining product perceptions and the importance of national identity on the marketability on a variety of foreign and domestic consumer products. I am also interested in determining whether the process of globalization has weakened an individual’s sense of national identity and whether that changes their preference for purchasing a foreign and/or domestic product. Primarily, my research question asks whether nationalism influences a product’s marketability. Megabalanus coccopoma is a prominent invasive species off the coast of Georgia. Recently, among collected samples thought to be M. coccopoma, several individuals of an unidentified species of barnacle were found. The species has been identified as a Megabalanus species, but is still unidentified to the species level. Species identification is difficult due to morphological variation, inconsistent taxonomic keys, and unknown origin. In this study I developed a method to accurately distinguish M. coccopoma from the unidentified Megabalanus sp. using sequence differences in the mitochondrial Cytochrome Oxidase I (COI) gene.
