Beta Linear Failure Rate Geometric Distribution With Applications, Broderick O. Oluyede, Ibrahim Elbatal, Shujiao Huang

This paper introduces the beta linear failure rate geometric (BLFRG) distribution, which contains a number of distributions including the exponentiated linear failure rate geometric, linear failure rate geometric, linear failure rate, exponential geometric, Rayleigh geometric, Rayleigh and exponential distributions as special cases. The model further generalizes the linear failure rate distribution. A comprehensive investigation of the model properties including moments, conditional moments, deviations, Lorenz and Bonferroni curves and entropy are presented. Estimates of model parameters are given. Real data examples are presented to illustrate the usefulness and applicability of the distribution.

A Quantile Regression Approach To Measuring The Educational Effect On Body Mass Index, Dakshina G. De Silva, Bradley T. Ewing, Catherine P. Slade, Mark A. Thompson

Journal of the Georgia Public Health Association

Background: By use of a publically available database, the effects of education and geography on obesity as measured by body mass index (BMI) were evaluated with a quantile regression approach. The focus of the analysis was on the practical interpretation of the regression results to inform health policy decision makers about the importance of educational attainment for the growing public health issue of obesity in the US, particularly in the Southeast.

Methods: With data from the 2007 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS), quantile regressions were employed to estimate the educational effect on BMI while controlling for relevant lifestyle, socioeconomic, …

Demographic And Socioeconomic Factors Associated With Hpv Vaccination In Georgia’S South Central Health District, Sydney Ekeledo, Candace Best, Stephanie Norman, Jodi Bazemore, Jessica Smith Schwind

Journal of the Georgia Public Health Association

Background: Human Papillomavirus (HPV) subtypes are the primary cause of cervical cancer. Despite introduction of the HPV vaccine in 2006, vaccination percentages remain low across Georgia counties. The primary objective of this research was to conduct a descriptive epidemiological study of HPV vaccination coverage among individuals in the South Central Health District (SCHD) to provide guidance for targeted vaccination campaigns aimed at adolescents residing in rural communities.

Methods: Data from the Georgia Registry of Immunization Transactions and Services and AEGIS.net, Inc. were used to analyze demographic and socioeconomic factors associated with HPV vaccine uptake among individuals visiting county health departments …

Cruise aboard an ocean trawler (via video) as it tows a shrimp net and learn how scientists collect data once the catch is on deck.

Researchers must act quickly to sort, count, measure, and then release the fish back to the water.

The education program is a multidisciplinary biology/math exercise allowing participants to observe sampling techniques and analyze the catch. Just like a fishery biologist participant’s will:

• Identify fish
• Measure fish
• Calculate percentage of each species caught from the trawl sample
• Apply statistics (e.g. mean length) a variety of fish species

The Georgia Southern University Real STEM Project is collaborating with 10 middle and high schools on development and implementation of an interdisciplinary STEM research and design course that actively engages students in real-world problem solving. We will discuss the expected outcomes of such interdisciplinary STEM experiences which is the development of 21st century STEM reasoning. Examples of using authentic teaching strategies to promote complex systems reasoning, model-based reasoning, computational reasoning, engineering design-based reasoning, and quantitative reasoning will be shared with participants.

The University of North Georgia (UNG), Dahlonega, suffers from high attrition of STEM majors and low STEM graduation rates. In response to this challenge, a transdisciplinary (TD) team of UNG STEM faculty – from biology, chemistry, mathematics, and physics - has designed and developed hands-on laboratory experiments that employ empirical, interpretive, critical, and transdisciplinary research methodologies.
