Analysis Of The Microbiome Of Amblyomma Americanum In The Statesboro Region, Ella Zierdt, Lorenza Beati, Mary Humphrey, Saviour Dralabu

The lone star tick, Amblyomma americanum, is the most common tick in Georgia. It is mainly known as an Ehrlichia spp. vector, but its microbiome can be diverse, depending on geography, developmental stage, and season. Little is known about bacterial diversity in ticks from the southeastern U.S. A Nanopore MinION sequencer was used for a preliminary analysis of the bacterial microbiome in A. americanum from the Statesboro region. DNA was extracted from 39 nymphs, 35 males, and 39 females. DNA samples were pooled by month of collection and life stage/sex, amplified with barcoded 16SrDNA primers, and sequenced. Approx. 77% …

Strepsiptera are generally described as parasitic castrators as they cause the reproductive death of the hosts. In southeast Georgia, only a handful of paper wasps are hosts for twisted-winged parasites. One such species, Polistes metricus, is parasitized by a twisted-winged parasite, Xenos peckii. Previous studies document that host survivorship at most developmental stages was not largely influenced by the presence of X. peckii. To determine if X. peckii can affect their host’s ability to survive and reproduce, we dissected P. metricus to determine ovary development and the presence of X. peckii parasites. Investigating Concealments In Infanticide: Incidents And Forensic Entomological Implications, Gillian L. Johnson

Forensic entomology plays a critical role in estimating the minimum postmortem interval (mPMIs), based on insect evidence. When victims are concealed, this can complicate mPMI estimates. Utilizing data from the National Violent Death Reporting System (NVDRS) from 2018 to 2021, I found that victims of infanticides and neonaticides are often concealed. I first investigated the demographics of offenders and victims, how often victims are concealed, and the most common means of concealment. I found that victims of infanticide were likely to be concealed 5% of the time, and neonaticides 50% of the time. Next, I investigated how concealment alters insect …

This thesis presents two independents but thematically aligned research projects focused on the development and evaluation of sustainable polymers. The first involves the synthesis and characterization of a biobased polymer derived from tung oil and pine rosin. Tung oil, which is a triglyceride was chemically modified to produce tung oil diglyceride (TDG), which subsequently reacted with abietic acid-rich pine rosin to yield tung oil abietate (TOA), a biobased monomer. The TOA monomer was polymerized with butyl methacrylate (BMA) and divinylbenzene (DVB) using di-tert-butyl peroxide (DTBP) as a thermal initiator. Sand dunes provide critical ecosystem services including storm protection by acting as natural barriers. However, these systems are threatened by human disturbance, particularly pedestrian traffic occurring at footpaths that damages dune vegetation. Vegetation is essential to dune growth and stability, as dune plants trap and bind sand. When trampled, dunes become more vulnerable to erosion and less effective at providing coastal protection. On Tybee Island, Georgia—a popular tourist destination—a vegetated dune was constructed in 2020 to enhance storm protection. Vitamin C (ascorbic acid) is a vital micronutrient recognized for its antioxidant capacity and essential bodily functions, such as collagen formation, neurotransmitter activity, and regulation of the immune system. This study explores how vitamin C can protect and potentially heal cells under oxidative stress and inflammation, using A549 cells, a human lung epithelial cell line, as the model system. Saltwater intrusion, the movement of ocean water into freshwater, is a significant global threat to coastal freshwater ecosystems linked to both climate change and anthropogenic influences. Alterations to coastal landscapes can increase intrusion. Sapelo Island has an extensive history of agricultural landscape alteration, but freshwater flow decline increased the movement of saltwater inland by tides. Intrusion is expected to increase in frequency and magnitude due to rising sea levels and storms. Salinization puts inland habitats and the humans relying on them at risk. The ecological complexity of southeastern Coastal Plain rivers is reflected in the diversity of fish communities they support, yet the processes structuring early life dynamics remain poorly understood. This thesis explores the influence of environmental gradients on larval fish assemblage composition and American Shad (Alosa sapidissima) spawning phenology across two Georgia Coastal Plain river systems.

In the unregulated Ogeechee River, I investigated spatial and temporal variation in larval fish communities by comparing mainstem and tributary habitats to understand the role of tributaries in watershed-wide larval production. Foster children face persistent educational inequities shaped by trauma, frequent placement changes, and systemic barrierswithin schools. This dissertation investigates how foster parents perceive and influence the educational experiences of the children in their care, emphasizing the intersection of advocacy, trauma-informed teaching, and institutional response. Grounded in trauma-informed pedagogy, critical ecology and curriculum studies, the study interrogates how schools both support and constrain foster children’s educational opportunities. An arts-based methodology was employed, combining fictionalized portraiture and digital ethnography. This case study examines the impact of specialized coaching support for preservice special education teachers with autism during their senior year of their teacher preparation program with specific focus on practicum and student teaching placements. The study involved two undergraduate students, ages 21 and 20, diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder, who were in their final year of a special education licensure program at a university in a rural area in the Midsouth region of the United States. Racial microaggressions are intentional or unintentional slights toward members of a marginalized community that may come in the form of verbal, behavioral, or environmental insults. Black/African Americans experience racial microaggressions frequently, and these experiences threaten mental health. Specifically, experiencing more racial microaggressions is linked with a risk for social anxiety. However, not all individuals within the community go on to experience social anxiety. Therefore, the present study sought to identify which individuals are more vulnerable to social anxiety given experiences of racism. Color dimorphism refers to the variation in color, color frequency, and physical traits between male and female individuals of the same species. It manifests in most dioecious species, presenting as differences in size, color, marking, and behavioral sexual characteristics. Sceloporus woodi, the Florida scrub lizard, is a species endemic to Florida that exhibits color dimorphism, particularity in size, and coloration of secondary sex characteristics. Purpose: The COVID-19 epidemic led to significant morbidity and mortality globally, especially among the elderly. Because SARS-CoV-2 is a novel viral pathogen, there was a lack of preventative and treatment options. Availability of effective vaccines has been an important factor in determining the epidemic trajectory. Analyzing the effects of the vaccines in reducing mortality across age groups is important for guiding future public health responses. According to the Georgia Department of Public Health (GDPH), the state of Georgia reported 563,658 cumulative COVID-19 cases and 9,845 total deaths in 2020. Decades of research on racial disparities in health outcomes suggest we should not be surprised with the disproportionate number of cases, hospital visits, and deaths of non-white and Black Georgia residents. Racial disparities in health are often defined by a Social Determinants of Health (SDOH) model. One understudied SDOH is racial residential segregation. Background: Research shows that nurses are often ill-prepared for disaster response. A survey conducted by the Georgia Department of Public Health Office of Nursing in April of 2021, demonstrated that 45% of the public health nurses surveyed had never deployed to a mass congregate shelter, and 43% reported they had no formal training related to emergency preparedness or mass sheltering. Empathy And Political Skill: Improving Salespeople’S Value Enhancing Behavior Performance, Megan C. Good, Charles H. Schwepker Jr.

Journal of Applied Marketing Theory

Little is known about the interface between empathy and political skill in sales. This study develops a model to reflect these characteristics and their impact on performance. Results from a study of 240 B2B salespeople contradict the a priori assumption that empathy may not be positively related to sales performance and challenge existing stereotypes that salespeople are not empathetic. Importantly, the findings show sellers employing empathy can generate enhanced outcomes. Also, this study extends our understanding that utilizing political influence spreads the benefit of empathy beyond the impact itself. A seasoned statistics instructor consulted with a seasoned instructional designer on a method to improve a particularly demanding course using a performance improvement approach to address learning difficulties she had noted in previous semesters. The Decoding the Disciplines methodology identified the most challenging concepts and provided a methodology to improve student learning performance. As a “wicked problem,” climate change requires interdisciplinary understanding and collaboration in order to prepare future leaders to develop solutions. To this end, as an ecologist and an anthropologist at a mid-sized university in the southeastern U.S., we designed a pair of interdisciplinary, research-intensive courses for first-year Honors students with the goal of improving understanding and communicating the urgency of climate change.
