The Obama Effect On African American High School Males, Aundra Simmons Vaughn Jan 2015

The Obama Effect On African American High School Males, Aundra Simmons Vaughn

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

“Of all the challenges in education today, I can think of none greater than the challenge of motivating, educating, and empowering black male learners” (Kafele, 2012, p. 67). Research documents the struggles of African American males in society and education. There is concern among educators for role models for young people to emulate (Lines, 2001). To explore President Obama as a role model and the impact of his historic election on African American recent high school male graduates, a qualitative research study was used. A phenomenological design helped described the “essence” of the phenomenon— the election of an African American …

Cues Of Colorism: The Psychological, Sociocultural, And Developmental Differences Between Light-Skinned And Dark-Skinned African-Americans, Tasia M. Pinkston Jan 2015

Cues Of Colorism: The Psychological, Sociocultural, And Developmental Differences Between Light-Skinned And Dark-Skinned African-Americans, Tasia M. Pinkston

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

Skin color biases, henceforth referred to as colorism, are the biased judgments, attitudes and behaviors toward an individual based on the lightness or darkness of their skin. Available research on the topic has examined a select group of variables, such as mate selection, self-esteem and perceived attractiveness. However, there is no single study on differences between African-Americans across several domains, including their psychological (skin color satisfaction and self-esteem), sociocultural (media influence on appearance and discriminatory events), and developmental (ethnic identity) well-being. Moreover, there is no research on differences in these variables between African-Americans reared in rural versus non-rural areas. To …

An Evaluation Of A Secondary Student Advisement Program, Barbara A. Jordan Jan 2015

An Evaluation Of A Secondary Student Advisement Program, Barbara A. Jordan

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

This mixed methods program evaluation examines the effectiveness of a high school advisory program in meeting its stated goals from the perspective of its various stakeholders. Using both qualitative and quantitative methods and applying a concurrent embedded strategy, the researcher uses Stufflebeam’s CIPP Model (Stufflebeam, McKee & McKee, 2003) as a framework to conduct a study of the Teachers-As-Advisors (TAA) Program in a rural high school in Georgia. Surveys were administered to 205 students, 40 parents, and 17 advisors. Two district administrators, three school administrators, and two counselors were interviewed. In addition, focus group discussions were held with a purposeful …

The Road Less Traveled: Alumni Perceptions Of The Georgia Early College High School Experience, Tequila Tranise Morgan Jan 2015

The Road Less Traveled: Alumni Perceptions Of The Georgia Early College High School Experience, Tequila Tranise Morgan

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

Despite the efforts of traditional high schools to educate all students, at-risk populations tend to lag behind their White and more affluent counterparts in educational achievement, high school graduation rates, and college attendance rates. Early College High Schools (ECHSs) were designed to attract and retain at-risk students through rigorous academic practices, strong support systems, and by providing free access to college credits while students are still in high school.

With the case study approach as a guide, this research used an open-ended interview protocol to collect data from a sample of 16 students who attended one ECHS in Georgia between …

Learning Outcomes In An Online Vs Traditional Course, Steven Stack Dr. Jan 2015

Learning Outcomes In An Online Vs Traditional Course, Steven Stack Dr.

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

Relative enrollment in online classes has tripled over the last ten years, but the efficacy of learning online remains unclear. While two recent Meta analyses report higher exam grades for online vs. traditional classes, this body of research has been marked by two recurrent limitations: (1) a possible problem of selection bias wherein students self select the mode of course delivery and (2) a relative lack of proctoring of exams in online sections. Both of these confounders contribute to observed differences in performance. The present study addresses these limitations. Data refer to 64 students enrolled in criminology classes at a …

Choosing Not To Cheat: A Framework To Assess Students’ Rationales For Abiding By Academic Integrity Policies, Kenneth H. Kolb, Kyle C. Longest, Alexa J. Singer Jan 2015

Choosing Not To Cheat: A Framework To Assess Students’ Rationales For Abiding By Academic Integrity Policies, Kenneth H. Kolb, Kyle C. Longest, Alexa J. Singer

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

Writing intensive first-year seminars are well situated within the curriculum to teach about issues like cheating and plagiarism. Although most research on academic integrity focuses on how—and how much—students cheat, we take a different approach. We assess whether participation in writing intensive first-year seminars produces measurable changes in students’ rationales for choosing not to cheat. Relying upon data collected via pre and post-test in-depth interviews, we propose a framework to measure these changes that is grounded in students’ accounts of how they negotiated real-life opportunities to cheat on campus. In general, we find that writing intensive first-year seminars produce no …

“It’S Just Nice Having A Real Teacher”: Student Perceptions Of Online Versus Face-To-Face Instruction, Lisa P. Tichavsky, Andrea N. Hunt, Adam Driscoll, Karl Jicha Jan 2015

“It’S Just Nice Having A Real Teacher”: Student Perceptions Of Online Versus Face-To-Face Instruction, Lisa P. Tichavsky, Andrea N. Hunt, Adam Driscoll, Karl Jicha

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

With recent increases in online enrollment, undergraduate students are far more likely to experience an online learning environment than they were in the past. While existing literature provides general insight into reasons why students may or may not prefer online instruction, it is unclear whether these preferences are shaped by student’s perceptions of online learning or actual experience with online courses. To address this gap, undergraduate students enrolled in either online (n=370) or face-to-face (n=360) courses were surveyed about their course format preference. A content analysis of the responses was performed with the findings suggesting that 1) student perceptions may …

Securing The Education Pipeline: Arrested Learning - When We Suspend And Expel Our Youngest From School, Pamela Perkins Carn, Marlyn Tillman

Georgia Association for Positive Behavior Support Conference

In 2005, Dr. Walter S. Gilliam surveyed a sample of 4,000 state-funded preschools, looking at expulsions.

Dr. Gilliam’s research revealed that four-year-olds were expelled at a rate of about 1.5 times greater than three-year-olds. Boys were expelled at a rate of more than 4.5 times that of girls. African-Americans were about twice as likely to be expelled as Latino and white children, and more than five times as likely to be expelled as Asian-American children. (Dr. Walter S. Gilliam, Edward Zigler Center in Child Development and Social Policy, Yale University, 2005)

During the 2013-2014 school year, more than 14,000 children …
