The Influence Of Phenotypic Variation On Criminal Judgement, Jacque-Corey Cormier
The Influence Of Phenotypic Variation On Criminal Judgement, Jacque-Corey Cormier
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to investigate the influence of phenotypic variation on criminal judgment. This study had two phases. In the first phase, participants rated multiple headshot photographs on the degree to which African American men possess pronounced Afrocentric features (fuller lips, broader nose, curlier hair, darker skin, etc.). The race of the participants predicted 34.2% of the variance in average skin color ratings above all other variables. White participants rated the Black faces as darker than any other participants rated the same faces. Researchers used the faces rated least, average, and most prototypical of Blacks as the …

Job Satisfaction And The Internship In State Level Law Enforcement, Catherine J. Sapp
Job Satisfaction And The Internship In State Level Law Enforcement, Catherine J. Sapp
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
It was the hypothesis of the researcher that exposing criminal justice students to the career field through the completion of a criminal justice internship will increase job satisfaction for the individual in state level investigative law enforcement and the field as a whole. Increased job satisfaction, in turn, produces higher retention rates which may lead to making the state level investigative law enforcement field a more stable environment. Therefore, the purpose of this correlational study was to discover if there was a difference in the score on Spector's Job Satisfaction Survey between state level investigative law enforcement personnel who completed …

African American Male Students' Perceptions Of Factors That Contribute To Their Academic Success, Gertrude Rolland
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
This study sought to understand African American high school males' perceptions of factors contributing to academic success. The researcher gathered information by interviewing students and collecting their demographic profile data. This qualitative research method enabled the researcher to learn directly from students what factors African American male students associated with academic success as well as challenges to academic success and solutions for achieving academic success. Participants were three junior and three senior African American high school male students attending a rural high school in Georgia. Data collection occurred during the spring semester of 2011. Each participant was asked 16 questions …

Impact Of Peer Evaluation Confidentiality On Student Marks, Christina Hamme Peterson, N.Andrew Peterson
Impact Of Peer Evaluation Confidentiality On Student Marks, Christina Hamme Peterson, N.Andrew Peterson
International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning
Although group work is commonly used in university-level instruction, social loafing, domineering team members, poor attenders, and inequitable distribution of marks have been identified as obstacles to team-based learning. Peer evaluation has been proposed as one vehicle to address these issues. For use in grading, peer evaluations are often anonymous; however, as tools to address team functioning, they should not be conducted anonymously, but rather with the results discussed as feedback. It has been suggested, however, that non-confidential peer evaluations will artificially elevate students’ marks. In this study, we investigated the impact of peer evaluation confidentiality on students’ marks. Without …

Assessing The Pedagogical Impact Of The Vanth Engineering Research Center On Faculty And Postdoctoral Professionals, Monica F. Cox, James Cawthorne, Nathan Mcneill, Osman Cekic, Matthew Frye, Melissa J. Stacer
International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning
From 1999 to 2007, the Vanderbilt-Northwestern-Texas-Harvard/MIT (VaNTH) Engineering Research Center focused on improving bioengineering education through the applications of learning science, learning technology, and assessment and evaluation within the domain of bioengineering. This paper discusses results from a survey to explore the impact of the VaNTH experience on participating faculty and postdoctoral professionals. The results note that respondents differed in their familiarity with and applications of dimensions of the “How People Learn” framework and in their operationalization of effective instruction after their participation in VaNTH. Implications for teaching and learning with the context of a Center model are discussed along …
