Don't Google It! Appeal To Students' Passions To Inspire Information Literacy, Ellen B. Derwin Ph.D. Feb 2020

Don't Google It! Appeal To Students' Passions To Inspire Information Literacy, Ellen B. Derwin Ph.D.

Georgia International Conference on Information Literacy

Who doesn’t love Google? Yet in courses all across disciplines at colleges and universities, faculty struggle with assigning work that requires research. Why? Students immediately Google (or use another search engine) to seek information and often ignore requirements to seek information that is relevant, credible, accurate and evidence-based. Despite partnering with librarians, grading with information literacy as a high priority, and guiding students to seek appropriate sources, googling without critical thinking happens on a regular basis. At Brandman University, this frustration for faculty occurs throughout the curriculum, even in courses such as Critical Thinking, Student Success, and Information Literacy, which …

An Engaging, Hands-On Activity For Evaluating Sources Through Problem-Based Learning, Brooke J. Taxakis, Elizabeth Dobbins

Georgia International Conference on Information Literacy

How can we facilitate first-year student engagement with critical Framework concepts, especially in a one-shot class? In this workshop, we will introduce an active learning activity designed to teach source evaluation in a 50-minute class. The activity, which incorporates elements of problem-based learning and uses a flipped classroom approach, was added to our institution’s first-year experience course. Prompting students to consider a local issue, the activity requires students to evaluate sources represented as “source cards,” choose sources they would use in the context of the assignment, and justify their decisions. Motivated by the challenge and relevance of the activity, students …

Sensemaking And Big Data Science: Soft And Hard Marketing Skills Are Needed Today, Michael Latta Feb 2020

Sensemaking And Big Data Science: Soft And Hard Marketing Skills Are Needed Today, Michael Latta

AMTP Proceedings 2020

The story of how Big Data Science was enabled through the marriage of technology in the form of the young discipline of computer science and the mature discipline of statistics was told by Gil Press in his (2013) Forbes piece titled ‘A Very Short History Of Data Science.’ The name “Data Science” is now the discipline charged with utilizing Big Data. But making sense of data has a much longer history and has been debated by scientists, statisticians, librarians, computer scientists and others for years. More recently, the ideas surrounding the importance of ‘context’ have been integrated into the use …

Maladaptive Grief: Irish And American Experiences Of Loss, Mourning, And Trauma, Abby Hey Jan 2020

Maladaptive Grief: Irish And American Experiences Of Loss, Mourning, And Trauma, Abby Hey

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

Literature that responds to loss and expresses mourning, a genre referred to as the elegy, traditionally follows an adaptive pattern in which a mourner reaches consolation and comfort. In the modern period, however, mourning transformed into destructive experiences that were notably private. With this phenomenon of greater social and emotional isolation, writers like Sylvia Plath, Samuel Beckett, and Elizabeth Bishop expressed rumination and irresolution. In contrast, before the twentieth century, elegies were not only more consolatory, but there was a greater emphasis on shared feeling, and this communal type of mourning is more often adaptive. By grieving together in the …

Sexual assault is a public health concern that must be systematically addressed. The existence of a comprehensive sexual assault policy and compliance with federal regulations can guide institutions of higher education in responding to and preventing sexual assault on campus. Federal laws hold institutions accountable for providing a safe environment for students. The purpose of this qualitative content analysis was to assess compliance with federal policy and assess the response to sexual assault by IHE in Georgia. Data from the National Center for Education Statistics was utilized to identify Georgia's institutions receiving federal aid during 2018-2019. Using a proportionate stratified …

Indicators Of Impactful Reflection In Pre-Service Teachers: A Case For Creativity, Honesty And Unfamiliar Experiences, Sarah Marie Catalana Jan 2020

Indicators Of Impactful Reflection In Pre-Service Teachers: A Case For Creativity, Honesty And Unfamiliar Experiences, Sarah Marie Catalana

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

This study investigated three commonalities among pre-service teachers who demonstrated advanced reflective practice regarding fieldwork experiences: (a) creative potential; (b) honesty in confronting misconceptions of the teaching profession, and (c) fieldwork in unfamiliar settings. Forty-two pre-service teachers submitted reflective papers which were qualitatively analyzed and scored for reflective ability using Harland and Wondras’s (2011) Framework of Four Levels of Reflection for Teacher Education. Low and High Reflectors were compared in terms of creative potential, as measured by the Torrance Tests of Creative Thinking-Figural. Results revealed Low Reflectors generally demonstrated lower creative potential than High Reflectors, with a significant difference (p < .05) in mean scores on the Abstractness of Titles subscale. High Reflectors also bluntly confronted previous misconceptions concerning education and described their field placements as unfamiliar when compared to their personal educational experiences. Implications for support of meaningful reflective practice in future educators are discussed in detail.

Factors Associated With Hiv Testing In Liberia: Findings From The 2013 Demographic Health Survey, Miatta M.E. Dennis

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) is among the world’s most serious challenges. The African region is severely affected with nearly one in 25 adults being HIV infected –accounting for over two-thirds of HIV infected people worldwide. In 2013, approximately three in four men and half of women aged 15-49 had never been HIV tested. In 2018, over 7,000 Liberians were HIV positive. Increasing HIV testing rates is the primary step to reducing HIV infection rates. This study examines factors associated with HIV testing behavior among Liberians using the Knowledge Attitude Behavior (KAB) model as a conceptual framework. The 2013 Liberia Demographic …

Making The Invisible Visible: Enhancing Information Literacy And Metacognition With A Constructivist Activity, Jessica Denke, Jennifer Jarson, Stefanie Sinno Jan 2020

Making The Invisible Visible: Enhancing Information Literacy And Metacognition With A Constructivist Activity, Jessica Denke, Jennifer Jarson, Stefanie Sinno

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

A growing body of literature focused on the pedagogical relationship between information literacy (IL) and metacognition suggests that facilitating learners’ reflections promotes IL learning. However, activating and assessing this relationship is difficult. This article describes a constructivist activity that models for students how to practice IL while increasing awareness of metacognitive approaches. The modified jigsaw activity, including a worksheet, facilitates individual reflection and peer-to-peer learning through structured conversation regarding popular press articles. Using a grounded theory approach, coding of students’ worksheets showed IL development related to comprehension, procedure, evaluation, and reflection. Moreover, the worksheet offers instructors insight into student learning …

A Team Approach To Using Student Feedback To Enhance Teaching And Learning, Cynthia S. Deale

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

This study investigated how one type of student evaluation of teaching (SET) tool and a team approach to evaluating a course helped to provide feedback in an online, synchronous and asynchronous course and an in-person, face-to-face course through a Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) study. Student observational narratives and responses to a feedback tool were gathered for two undergraduate courses, one that was offered face-to-face (n=167) and one that was taught online (n=155), over several semesters. The most important factors, with regard to the teaching of the courses, were ensuring that the courses were well organized in terms of …
