Theory: The Elephant In The Scholarship Of Teaching And Learning Room, Pat Hutchings Jan 2007

Theory: The Elephant In The Scholarship Of Teaching And Learning Room, Pat Hutchings

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

Excerpt: November, 2006 marked the third annual meeting of the International Society for the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning, and it was another blockbuster, with 850 participants, a rich array of sessions, the “Commons@ISSoTL” for informal exchange and sharing of resources, and a true international feel. As in past years, the conference also provided a window into the character and progress of the work, and a chance to ask where we are, what has been accomplished, and where we’re going. These questions leave room for considerable disagreement, of course. As in the parable of the blind men and …

The Status Of The Scholarship Of Teaching And Learning In The Discipline, Paul D. Witman, Laurie Richlin Jan 2007

The Status Of The Scholarship Of Teaching And Learning In The Discipline, Paul D. Witman, Laurie Richlin

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

The concept of the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) was developed over 15 years ago. Because scholarly recognition comes from the discipline, the researchers determined to find out how a range of disciplines deal with the SoTL. In that time, how has the SoTL been integrated into and used by the various academic disciplines? What publication outlets are available to professors within each of the disciplines to present and publish on the SoTL? This survey review of current associations, conferences, and journals examines the SoTL in 20 different disciplines as demonstrated by scholarly production within these disciplines. Adoption levels …

Allowing Not-Knowing In A Dialogic Discussion, José Alfonso Feito Jan 2007

Allowing Not-Knowing In A Dialogic Discussion, José Alfonso Feito

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

Inspired by Bakhtin’s and Vygotsky’s theories of learning, this project explores how “allowing not-knowing” is enacted within collaborative student-led seminar discussions. Earlier research on student reflections (Feito, 2002) suggested that in successful seminars, participants regularly acknowledge their lack of understanding, offer partial understandings, and collectively develop new meanings. This project tracks these phenomena within actual classroom discourse. A detailed discourse analysis of a small “Great Books” seminar session (N=16) describes how students construct a learning environment conducive to not-knowing and the open-ended construction of meaning. The students used discourse markers and sequencing to invite the recursive manipulation of ideas by …

The Significance Of Knowledge In Learning: A Psychologically Informed Analysis Of Higher Education Students' Perceptions, Effie Maclellan, Rebecca Soden Jan 2007

The Significance Of Knowledge In Learning: A Psychologically Informed Analysis Of Higher Education Students' Perceptions, Effie Maclellan, Rebecca Soden

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

The emergence of what is increasingly becoming known as the knowledge age implies that higher education should prepare students to be, primarily, knowledge workers. This proposition triggered a small scale study in which structured interviews were carried out with 25 second-year undergraduates registered for a psychology module on motivational theory. The purpose of the interview was to discern students’ views on the features of dialogue/talk and of student study behaviour that help them to develop usable knowledge. The dominant finding was that students did not perceive their learning to be facilitated through being required to be cognitively active in processing …

Powerpoint Presentation Handouts And College Student Learning Outcomes, Illene C. Noppe Ph.D. Jan 2007

Powerpoint Presentation Handouts And College Student Learning Outcomes, Illene C. Noppe Ph.D.

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

This investigation sought to determine if supplementing lectures using Microsoft PowerPoint slides with handouts of the slides enhanced test-taking performance in an undergraduate Human Development course. In the first study, one section of the course (N=50) was given handouts for one exam and a final; the other (N=50) received handouts only for the final. No significant differences in test performance occurred across sections. The second study, conducted the following semester for two sections of the same course, assessed whether the receipt of PowerPoint handouts was moderated by learning styles. Learning styles were not predictive of improved test performance as a …

Developing A Shared Meaning Of Scholarship To Enable The Revision Of Promotion Policy, Cheryl Albers Jan 2007

Developing A Shared Meaning Of Scholarship To Enable The Revision Of Promotion Policy, Cheryl Albers

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

Groups communicate about scholarship on the tacit assumption that there is a mutual understanding of the term. Yet the process of policy development is often hampered as different meanings attached to the term become evident. This paper uses culturalinterpretive and interactionist conceptual frameworks to analyze a specific case of redefining the shared meaning of scholarship and codifying these meanings in promotion and tenure policy. Data was collected through interviews, observation and document analysis. The six significant groups involved in this policy revision invested the term scholarship with different meanings, including viewing it as problematic, as a creative process, as currency …

Change And Relationships In Elementary Preservice Teachers’ Mathematics Pedagogical Beliefs, Teaching Efficacy Beliefs, And Content Knowledge, Susan L. Swars, Lynn C. Hart , Ed., Stephanie Z. Smith, Marvin E. Smith Jan 2007

Change And Relationships In Elementary Preservice Teachers’ Mathematics Pedagogical Beliefs, Teaching Efficacy Beliefs, And Content Knowledge, Susan L. Swars, Lynn C. Hart , Ed., Stephanie Z. Smith, Marvin E. Smith

Proceedings of the Annual Meeting of the Georgia Association of Mathematics Teacher Educators

This study investigated the mathematics beliefs and content knowledge of 103 elementary preservice teachers in a developmental teacher preparation program that included a two course mathematics methods sequence. Preservice teachers’ pedagogical beliefs became more cognitively-oriented during the teacher preparation program with these changes occurring during the two methods courses. Pedagogical beliefs remained stable during student teaching. The preservice teachers also significantly increased their personal efficacy for teaching mathematics throughout the program with these shifts occurring across both methods courses and into student teaching. Pedagogical beliefs and teaching efficacy beliefs were not related at the beginning of the program, but, in …

School Renewal In South Georgia, Sean Michael Mulvanity Dec 2006

School Renewal In South Georgia, Sean Michael Mulvanity

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

This study examines the implementation of the Accelerated Schools Project at one school in South Georgia. The Accelerated Schools Project is a comprehensive school renewal effort developed by Henry Levin which attempts to change both the school decision making process and the instructional techniques used in the classroom. The unique governance structure, which attempts to involve all stakeholders in decisions that impact the institution, and the student-centered instructional technique are combined in an effort to instigate school renewal. The phenomenological nature of this study examines the implementation of the Accelerated School Project from a historical and cultural perspective. The author …
