Towards Sotl As Critical Engagement: A Perspective From The "South", Brenda Leibowitz

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

Excerpt:

In my role as Director of a Centre for Teaching and Learning I support academics to enhance their teaching role by conducting research into teaching and learning, In some cases I am a fellow traveler, working alongside academics, and in some cases I am a team leader, providing support rather than working as a partner. I draw support from the various approaches to research on teaching, of which the scholarship of teaching and learning remains...

Wild Pansies, Trojan Horses, And Others: International Teaching And Learning As Bricolage, David B. Starr-Glass Jul 2010

Wild Pansies, Trojan Horses, And Others: International Teaching And Learning As Bricolage, David B. Starr-Glass

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

Educational change, predictable or unanticipated, occurs when student populations are altered. When an American college started an international program in Prague, it was anticipated that educational practice would change. To understand the implications for teaching, learning, and practice mentors explored the new educational landscape. The concept of bricolage informed much of that exploration and this paper considers bricolage, summarizes research outcomes, and reflects on the opportunity and ethics of engagement with Other.

Strategic Theory, Methodology, Air Power, And Coercion In The 2006 Israel-Hezbollah War, Zachary Jones Jul 2010

Strategic Theory, Methodology, Air Power, And Coercion In The 2006 Israel-Hezbollah War, Zachary Jones

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

This thesis analyzes the air power, coercion, strategic theory, and strategic methodology in the 2006 Israel/Hezbollah War. In state versus non-state actor conflicts, air power's utility is different from state versus state conflicts. The dynamics of coercion also differ greatly from state versus state conflict. Additionally the strategic theories, and the methodologies used to develop these theories differ as well, both in their goals and their utility. By examining the 2006 Israel/Hezbollah war, which is an excellent example of a high-intensity conflict between a very capable state military, and a well-equipped non-state actor, Hezbollah, I analyze the ways in which …

Finding Your Place In The Scholarship Of Teaching And Learning, Daniel Bernstein Jul 2010

Finding Your Place In The Scholarship Of Teaching And Learning, Daniel Bernstein

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

Excerpt:

One thing is abundantly clear about the emerging communities of scholarship in teaching and learning. Many, many instructors in higher education throughout the world are paying close attention to their students' learning, reflecting on their own contributions to that learning, and making their thoughts and their work visible to others. An attitude of inquiry about teaching and learning is no longer limited to faculty members who specialize in education research; the best instructors in...

Thinking Critically About Critical Thinking In Higher Education, Margaret Lloyd, Nan Bahr Jul 2010

Thinking Critically About Critical Thinking In Higher Education, Margaret Lloyd, Nan Bahr

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

The literature on critical thinking in higher education is constructed around the fundamental assumption that, while regarded as essential, is neither clearly nor commonly understood. There is elsewhere evidence that academics and students have differing perceptions of what happens in university classrooms, particularly in regard to higher order thinking. This paper reports on a small-scale investigation in a Faculty of Education at an Australian University into academic and student definitions and understandings of critical thinking. Our particular interest lay in the consistencies and disconnections assumed to exist between academic staff and students. The presumption might therefore be that staff and …

Graduate Student And Instructor Engagement In Course-Based Qualitative Research: A Case Study, Bonnie Cummings-Vickaryous, Cathy Mills, Larena Hoeber, June Ledrew Jul 2010

Graduate Student And Instructor Engagement In Course-Based Qualitative Research: A Case Study, Bonnie Cummings-Vickaryous, Cathy Mills, Larena Hoeber, June Ledrew

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

This case study explores the lived experiences of two graduate students and two university instructors in a course-based qualitative research project. The course design was a research methods course that focused on qualitative research and analysis and provided a vehicle for the instructors to reflect on their experiences and the students' experience of the cognitive and affective demands implicit in the assigned tasks. Findings indicate that development of student research skills is enhanced through student engagement in a real-world research project. This authentic learning experience, although stressful and overwhelming within the timelines of the course schedule, was instrumental in assisting …

Made In America? Assumptions About Service Learning Pedagogy As Transnational: A Comparison Between Ireland And The United States, Susan V. Iverson, Amanda Espenschied-Reilly Jul 2010

Made In America? Assumptions About Service Learning Pedagogy As Transnational: A Comparison Between Ireland And The United States, Susan V. Iverson, Amanda Espenschied-Reilly

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

Using exploratory, qualitative interviews, the authors studied conceptions of academic service-learning in the United States and the Republic of Ireland in order to elucidate the ways in which culture and social context shaped practitioners' perceptions and practices regarding service-learning pedagogy. Participants articulated a shared understanding of service-learning, identified similar barriers to utilizing service-learning and institutionalizing its practice, and discussed tensions surrounding the purpose of service-learning. However, Irish participants distanced their practice from the historical and cultural context of U.S. service-learning, demonstrating the process of localization. We conclude that the overarching tenets of service-learning may be transferable but the social, cultural, …

Sotl As Women's Work: What Do Existing Data Tell Us?, Kathleen Mckinney, Nancy L. Chick Jul 2010

Sotl As Women's Work: What Do Existing Data Tell Us?, Kathleen Mckinney, Nancy L. Chick

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

In this essay on the field of SoTL, we report on an exploratory, descriptive study of the levels of participation of men and women in various types of scholarship of teaching and learning (SoTL) activities. Drawing on 25 national and international sources of existing data on sex and involvement in SoTL, we find the following patterns: women are over-represented, relative to the numbers of men and women faculty/academic staff in higher education, in both self-selected with other approval or confirmation’ activities. The involvement of women and men was more representative to their numbers for activities in the ‘primarily invited, awarded, …

A demographic questionnaire was also given to enrich the data in this study. This study generated data …

The More The Merrier: Collective Sanctions And The Modification Of States' Behavior, Lauren J. Waldron May 2010

The More The Merrier: Collective Sanctions And The Modification Of States' Behavior, Lauren J. Waldron

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

Sanctions in South Africa and Libya were successful episodes because there was a definite change in the behavior on the part of the target. These sanctions episodes were successful because they were collectively imposed by a collection of States, achieved a change in behavior, as well as containing the instability experienced within the target. Sanctions in India and Pakistan were unsuccessful episodes because they were unilaterally imposed by the United States. There was no change in behavior in India and Pakistan because the sanctions were not collectively imposed by multiple States. The instability in the region was not contained because …

The Lived Experiences Of Female Superintendents In Alabama, Florida, And Georgia, Ruth Denette Odum May 2010

The Lived Experiences Of Female Superintendents In Alabama, Florida, And Georgia, Ruth Denette Odum

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

Although women actively seek advancement and constitute the majority of teachers in American public schools, they do not occupy many of the decision-making, administrative, or superintendency positions in education. This paper presents a perspective on the problem of women's lack of progression from entry-level positions of leadership through superintendency. A qualitative, phenomenological methodology is used to illuminate the lived experiences of 16 women who were active in the position of American public school superintendent during the 2008-2009 academic year. The superintendents were of varied age, race, and family/marital status. The researcher describes the voice of women superintendents and their personal …
