How Does High Impact Practice Predict Student Engagement? A Comparison Of White And Minority Students, Jeffrey Sweat, Glenda Jones, Suejung Han, Susan M. Wolfgram Jul 2013

How Does High Impact Practice Predict Student Engagement? A Comparison Of White And Minority Students, Jeffrey Sweat, Glenda Jones, Suejung Han, Susan M. Wolfgram

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

This High Impact Practices (HIPS) contribute to higherretention and graduation rates. HIPS are effective for racial and ethnic minorities in particular, who disproportionately experience high and persistent levels of post-secondary attrition. Little is known aboutthe mechanism by which HIPS promote retention. Based on a random survey of 268 undergraduate students, we conclude that HIPS correlate with engagement, defined as the alignment of student and institution (identifiedin the present study by behavioral and cognitive measures) and posit that this is the likely mechanism by which HIPS affect retention. Moreover, exposure to HIPS and the relationship between HIPS and engagement varies based …

The Dangers Of Student-Centered Learning – A Caution About Blind Spots In The Scholarship Of Teaching And Learning, Sioux Mckenna Jul 2013

The Dangers Of Student-Centered Learning – A Caution About Blind Spots In The Scholarship Of Teaching And Learning, Sioux Mckenna

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

Student-centered learning is an increasingly popular approach that shifts the focus from the teacher to the student. The approach argues that we need to have a clear understanding of who our students are and what their needs are in order for us to provide quality education. This paper applauds the focus on the student but raises two concerns about absences in this approach. Firstly, student-centered approaches rarely consider the actual knowledge being taught and learnt. There is little consideration of how the disciplinary knowledge is constructed and what norms and values underpin such constructions. Secondly, student-centered approaches are often undertaken …

Inclusive, Interactive Classroom As Student-Learning Facilitator, Celia Lo, Allison N. Monge Jul 2013

Inclusive, Interactive Classroom As Student-Learning Facilitator, Celia Lo, Allison N. Monge

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

Using principles underlying the social constructivist approach, we redesigned an undergraduate course on social problems, seeking to employ three learning activities (online assignments and small-group and class discussions) to facilitate knowledge construction by students and promote their intellectual capabilities and critical-thinking skills. We collected qualitative and quantitative data from students enrolled in the redesigned, hybrid course (it comprised class meetings on campus plus online work), two sections of which were taught. Students in both sections completed two feedback evaluation surveys about satisfaction and learning; this survey data comprised narrative comments completed across the fall and spring semesters of 2010–2011. We …

Evaluation Of A Classroom Exercise On Social Distance And Discrimination, Trent W. Maurer Jul 2013

Evaluation Of A Classroom Exercise On Social Distance And Discrimination, Trent W. Maurer

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

This project evaluated a class activity on social distance and discrimination using the Bogardus Social Distance Scale. Students [N=266] in six sections of a family development course received either lecture or lecture plus the activity and completed two pretest and posttest measures. Results revealed greater positive shifts on the Scale for students who received the activity, but equivalent changes in attitudes toward the target group as students in the lecture only group. Students in the activity group rated the activity plus lecture as highly as students in the lecture only group rated the lecture. Discussion focused on future directions for …

Students’ Responses To Application Quests: A Case-Based Learning Activity, Tim Brackenbury, Ryan Bronkema, Liane D. Ortis Jul 2013

Students’ Responses To Application Quests: A Case-Based Learning Activity, Tim Brackenbury, Ryan Bronkema, Liane D. Ortis

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

TApplication Quests are case-based learning activities that emphasize issues in professional practice and are given as part of the classroom learning process. This qualitative investigation examined students’ views regarding the perceived impacts that Application Quests had on their learning. A phenomenological analysis of written assignments from 44 undergraduate students revealed six prevalent themes. The Application Quests were described as being unlike previous experiences, difficult and time consuming, and an emotive process. They were further identified as helpful for learning and integrating course material, improving learning across courses, and increasing readiness for professional practice. These themes are discussed in relation to …

Effects Of Instructional Model On Student Attitude In An Introductory Biology Laboratory, Stephen M. Rybczynski, Elisabeth E. Schussler Jul 2013

Effects Of Instructional Model On Student Attitude In An Introductory Biology Laboratory, Stephen M. Rybczynski, Elisabeth E. Schussler

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

This study assessed student attitude towards reformed laboratories featuring a factorial design of inquiry (IN) and explicit / reflective (ER) pedagogy to foster nature of science understanding. Students in thirty-one lab sections responded to pre and post semester assessments of their confidence, perception of usefulness, and effectance motivation toward the laboratories. Relative change in attitude (RCA) was not significantly different (p>0.05) among the treatments or their interaction for confidence, usefulness, or effectance motivation. Student self-reports (n = 137) of factors that affected their attitude suggested that grades and TAs played a larger role in determining student attitude than the …

Carving A Wheel Or Assembling A Widget? Insights Into The Management Of Advanced Analytics, Michael Mccrary Jun 2013

Carving A Wheel Or Assembling A Widget? Insights Into The Management Of Advanced Analytics, Michael Mccrary

Journal of Applied Marketing Theory

Medieval guilds and assembly plants are unlikely metaphors in an information-based economy. My experience with advanced analytics suggests that such descriptions are nevertheless apt. This paper explores two distinct situations within a single firm. In one department, predictive models were generated through adopting a craft style approach. In another department, a production type of approach was deployed. The reasons for their adoption are explored, followed by their consequences for job satisfaction, performance, staffing, change-management, and more. Craft and production approaches have implications not just for modeling analysts and their managers but also for senior leaders, business partners, and human resources …

The Novelty And Nostalgia Effects Of A New Major League Baseball Stadium As Measured By Its Impact On Attendance, The Corresponding Costs Of Attending, And Ticket Revenue, Sam Fullerton, Carol Bruneau Jun 2013

The Novelty And Nostalgia Effects Of A New Major League Baseball Stadium As Measured By Its Impact On Attendance, The Corresponding Costs Of Attending, And Ticket Revenue, Sam Fullerton, Carol Bruneau

Journal of Applied Marketing Theory

Using secondary data, the novelty effect of the opening of 15 new Major League Baseball stadiums was determined. Using a seven-year period looking both before and after each stadium’s inaugural season, a meaningful novelty effect was documented. There were significant increases in attendance and the average ticket price for each of the 15 teams under scrutiny. As a consequence, there was a significant increase in the revenue generated through ticket sales. While the anticipated spike was in evidence for the year a new stadium opened, meaningful increases were also documented for the years subsequent to the opening of the new …

Passion Transfer In Sports Advertising: Sports Passion And Attitude Toward Advertising, Brandon Brown, Larry Degaris Jun 2013

Passion Transfer In Sports Advertising: Sports Passion And Attitude Toward Advertising, Brandon Brown, Larry Degaris

Journal of Applied Marketing Theory

In order to retain advertising clients, media companies are in search of viable strategies that can justify the high costs of advertising fees within the sports setting. In acknowledging the significance of advertising during sport programs, the current study seeks to investigate the value of sports advertising by introducing the concept of ‘passion transfer’ (i.e., the transference of high likability levels of sport programs to the sport programs’ advertisements). We examine this concept by analyzing the relationship between viewer passion towards programming and advertising effectiveness. In doing so, the study also lends support to the notion of incorporating emotional measures …
