Reflections On A Teaching Commons Regarding Diversity And Inclusive Pedagogy, Michelle Glowacki-Dudka, Jennifer Murray, David Concepción
Reflections On A Teaching Commons Regarding Diversity And Inclusive Pedagogy, Michelle Glowacki-Dudka, Jennifer Murray, David Concepción
International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning
Recently, twenty-one instructors at a Midwestern university participated in a faculty development seminar entitled, “Developing Pedagogies to Enhance Excellence and Diversity.” They designed a pedagogical change for the following academic year based on the workshop. During the following year, we collected data on the workshop participants through surveys and interviews to discover if they had implemented the proposed changes and what they discovered in the process. Thirteen of the twenty-one participants responded to our request for information and nine implemented their proposed changes during our data collection. Reviewing the data, we found three areas where participants made changes: application of …
Portraits Of Progress: The Rise Of Realism In Jane Austen's Clergy, Rachel Elizabeth Cason
Portraits Of Progress: The Rise Of Realism In Jane Austen's Clergy, Rachel Elizabeth Cason
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
This work examines the development of Austen's characterization of the clergy. It uses examples of three prominent clerical types: Henry Tilney, too good to be true ; William Collins, too ridiculous to be believable ; and Edmund Bertram, realistic because he is both flawed and virtuous. Utilizing critical sources from the last sixty years, this thesis demonstrates that previous scholars have overlooked the idea that the development of Austen's clerical characters can be used to chart Austen's progress as a writer. As such, this thesis fills in where other scholars have left off.

Excerpt: "The College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences itself is a community, comprised of 10 smaller communities -- our departments and the students, staff and faculty thereof -- and CLASS is part of the larger communities of Georgia Southern University and Statesboro. I mention this because CLASS has had many opportunities already this year to celebrate its communities, and there are more on the horizon."

Creative Differences: Teaching Creativity Across The Disciplines, Elizabeth Marquis, Susan Vajoczki
Creative Differences: Teaching Creativity Across The Disciplines, Elizabeth Marquis, Susan Vajoczki
International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning
Several authors have suggested that educational institutions have a responsibility to foster creativity in their students. Yet, research has shown that creativity is a variable concept that can mean different things in different fields and contexts (Kaufman & Baer, 2005). As a result, generic pedagogical techniques for developing creativity may not be equally appropriate across domains.
In light of these factors, this pilot study explored (via an electronic survey of instructors) the ways in which creativity is defined and taught across McMaster University’s six faculties. Results suggested areas of both commonality and difference across disciplines in terms of academics’ understandings …
The Impact Of Grading On A Curve: Assessing The Results Of Kulick And Wright’S Simulation Analysis, Gary L. Bailey, Ronald C. Steed
The Impact Of Grading On A Curve: Assessing The Results Of Kulick And Wright’S Simulation Analysis, Gary L. Bailey, Ronald C. Steed
International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning
Kulick and Wright concluded, based on theoretical mathematical simulations of hypothetical student exam scores, that assigning exam grades to students based on the relative position of their exam performance scores within a normal curve may be unfair, given the role that randomness plays in any given student’s performance on any given exam. However, their modeling predicts that academically heterogeneous students should fare much better than high achieving, academically homogenous students. We assess their conclusion indirectly using student scores from actual exams in actual university classes. We document that academically heterogeneous students do tend to perform at a similar level on …

Inquiry Learning: Level, Discipline, Class Size, What Matters?, Susan Vajoczki, Susan Watt, Michelle M. Vine, Rose Liao
International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning
Inquiry learning is a pedagogical approach that focuses on the processes and skills required to conduct research. It is a pedagogical approach that has been demonstrated to have positive learning outcomes. McMaster University has been committed to this form of learning for more than ten years in three of the faculties on campus (i.e., Humanities, Science and Social Sciences). This commitment has been in the creation of stand-alone, small class size first year inquiry classes. The current research, involving document analysis of 545 course outlines from the Faculty of Social Sciences demonstrates that inquiry learning is concentrated in first and …
