Course Correction: Examining 2020’S Middle Level Teacher Education Through A Critical, Antiracist Lens-A Collaborative Self-Study Of Teacher Education Practices, Kristie W. Smith, Kristina N. Falbe Sep 2024

Course Correction: Examining 2020’S Middle Level Teacher Education Through A Critical, Antiracist Lens-A Collaborative Self-Study Of Teacher Education Practices, Kristie W. Smith, Kristina N. Falbe

Current Issues in Middle Level Education

The work of teacher education in a 2020’s context is challenging and filled with opportunity. With a diversifying P-12 student body (Love, 2020; Pitts, 2019) and the confluence of social, political, and educational factors (Nieto & Bode, 2018), the complexities of teacher education are vast and fluid. In a historical moment that has included teaching in a time of pandemic, national reckonings over race and injustice, and explicit legislation to guide teaching about social history (Kelly et al, 2023), effective middle level teacher education is multifaceted. It calls for the development of teacher candidates skilled in creating school environments that …

Dei Corner: Introducing The Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion Committee: Our Purpose And What It Means For Manuscript Submissions & Reviews, Victoria Vanuitert, Lauren Zepp, Stacy Mcguire, Gwendolyn Deger, Jennifer Malone

Journal of Case Learning & Exceptional Learners

Toward the goal of publishing high-quality case studies and related research, the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) Committee of the Journal of Case Learning and Exceptional Learners (JCLEL) created guidelines for authors and reviewers. These guidelines focus on presenting cases with clear and balanced descriptions, as well as utilizing bias-free language so that students from traditionally marginalized backgrounds are represented in respectful and inclusive ways. Additional components specific to intervention-based case studies are also addressed, including the social validity of the intervention. Rubrics are included to be used by prospective authors as they prepare manuscripts for submission, as well as …

Check-In-Check-Out Intervention For Jose: A Collaborative Approach To Behavioral Intervention For A Student From A Cld Background, Robai N. Werunga Phd

Journal of Case Learning & Exceptional Learners

Engaging families from culturally and linguistically diverse (CLD) backgrounds has been found to yield collateral effects that include positive school outcomes for CLD students with disabilities. However, fostering active CLD family engagement, including those of immigrant status has historically posed some challenges. Additionally, when the student in question has a diagnosis that involves behavioral challenges, school and family interactions tend to be adversarial in nature. In this case study, the author describes the procedures undertaken to implement an intervention that not only addresses targeted behaviors of a student from CLD background, but also solicits and fosters parental involvement.

Get Fit! With Math And Lit: A Pilot Program Of Physical Activity, Mathematics, And Literacy With Middle Grades Students Through Culturally Relevant Pedagogy, Christine L. Craddock, Brittany Pinkerton Aug 2024

Get Fit! With Math And Lit: A Pilot Program Of Physical Activity, Mathematics, And Literacy With Middle Grades Students Through Culturally Relevant Pedagogy, Christine L. Craddock, Brittany Pinkerton

Current Issues in Middle Level Education

In an afterschool program at a university literacy center, we piloted the integration of physical activity with multimodal mathematics and literacy exercises. We aimed to incorporate the three tenets of culturally relevant pedagogy (CRP) including academic success, cultural competence, and critical consciousness with middle grades participants by utilizing a sports-based youth development model (SBYD), Teaching Personal and Social Responsibility (TPSR). Participants participated in 30-minute sessions bi-weekly over two months, which included reflective discussions and journaling to begin and end activities, respectively. Participants were invited to suggest activities during sessions and interact cooperatively with facilitators and peers. They also engaged in …
