Experience Of Preshot Routines Among Professional Golfers: An Existential Phenomenological Investigation, Allison Kristina Yancey
Experience Of Preshot Routines Among Professional Golfers: An Existential Phenomenological Investigation, Allison Kristina Yancey
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
One of the challenges in athletic performance is maintaining focus on relevant information. Focusing on irrelevant information can cause inconsistency during performance (Boutcher & Crews, 1987). Both cognitive and behavioral routines have shown to be beneficial to help achieve optimal concentration in the sport of golf (Cohn, Rotella & Lloyd, 1990). Although this is the case, little research has been found which has examined preshot routines from a qualitative perspective. The purpose of the current study was to gain an existential phenomenological understanding of preshot routines among elite professional golfers during performance. Eight professional golfers were interviewed for the study. …

Effects Of Video And Cognitive Imagery On Throwing Performance Of Baseball Pitchers: A Single Subject Design, Jamie Lynn Nelson
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of a three week imagery and video imagery intervention program on throwing accuracy performance of individual baseball pitchers. A secondary purpose of this study was to investigate if differences in accuracy response existed in low verses high ability imagers. A sample of pitchers (n=30) were asked to take the Movement Imagery Questionnaire- Revised and participants were randomly selected from the highest and lowest twenty percent of the group. The participants were obtained from high school and college level teams within the southeastern Georgia region (n= 6). Following the first week …
What Works In Georgia High Schools With Small Students Enrollment In Meeting Annual Yearly Progress, Carole Elaine Strickland
What Works In Georgia High Schools With Small Students Enrollment In Meeting Annual Yearly Progress, Carole Elaine Strickland
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
Since the passage of the No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB), 2001, many school districts across the nation have sought to find new sources to meeting the demands mandated by the legislation. Little research exists on the methods Georgia high schools with small student enrollment utilize to meet annual yearly progress (AYP) as outlined in the NCLB. This study was a mixed-method design gathering quantitative and qualitative data from twenty-eight Georgia high school principals and teachers with a small student enrollment. Fourteen of the twenty-eight counties identified responded to the Survey on Characteristics of Successful Schools. No single question received …
How Principals Promote A Culturally Relevant Learning Environment To Improve Black Student Achievement In Urban Elementary Schools, Rachel Maria Lee
How Principals Promote A Culturally Relevant Learning Environment To Improve Black Student Achievement In Urban Elementary Schools, Rachel Maria Lee
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
The purpose of the study is to explore the role of the principals in promoting a culturally relevant learning environment to help Black students in urban elementary schools to achieve academic success. The voice of the principals is absent in the literature. As a group, the academic achievement of students in suburban elementary schools surpasses the academic achievement of students in urban elementary schools based on assessments on the national and state levels. The majority of the Black students in elementary schools attend schools located in the urban areas that utilize the traditional teaching instruction, strategies, and methods to impart …
Analysis Of Procrastination And Flow Experiences, Bryan Leighton Dawson
Analysis Of Procrastination And Flow Experiences, Bryan Leighton Dawson
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
Flow is a subjective state that occurs when an individual is completely engaged in a particular activity (Csikszentmihalyi, 1975). This state encompasses arousal and intense interest in a task. Procrastination is the tendency of the individual who is in control of some activity to postpone or avoid that activity. Some researchers have suggested that perhaps there is more than one kind of procrastinator (Chu & Choi, 2005). The current study explored the differences between procrastination types and how these types relate to flow experiences. Participants were 60 upper-level Psychology students, working on a class term paper who completed weekly diaries …
Social Buffering By God: Can Prayer Reduce Stress In An Experimental Setting?, Amanda Cornell Schwartz
Social Buffering By God: Can Prayer Reduce Stress In An Experimental Setting?, Amanda Cornell Schwartz
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
Social networks are associated with positive health outcomes such as higher ratings of life-satisfaction, reduced risk of mortality, and decreased cardiovascular responses. Similarly, religiosity has been found to be beneficial to both physical and mental health. Specifically, religious involvement has been associated with decreased blood pressure and heart rate. Further, a social presence during a stressful event has been associated with reduced stress as measured by heart rate, blood pressure, and lower self-reported stress. However, this social buffering may not extend to a perceived presence, such as a higher deity. The current experiment examined whether prayer could reduce stress responses …
New Technology In Education As Viewed Through The Utopic And Dystopic Worlds Of Science Fiction, Vivian Elaine Jackson
New Technology In Education As Viewed Through The Utopic And Dystopic Worlds Of Science Fiction, Vivian Elaine Jackson
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
The use of educational technology has become a focus of reform efforts designed to enrich student learning. Proponents of technology view it as the panacea of education while others ask us to question this myth-information. Throughout America, school districts are designating millions of dollars for technology. Nevertheless, while there are schools with desirable infrastructures, too many schools are ill equipped for enhancing learning through technology. In addition, many classrooms house computers used to merely advance traditional teaching modes, e.g., drill and practice, rather than teach the importance of social responsibility for humankind and the environment through our use of technology. …
Spoken Self: Recognizing, Renaming, And Reclaiming, Gayle Frances Tremble
Spoken Self: Recognizing, Renaming, And Reclaiming, Gayle Frances Tremble
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
In the era of standardization, how can educators explore ways to hear the beating hearts of the students they encounter? How can educators recognize the multitudinous sounds of the students when each marches to the beat of a different drum? With these questions in mind, how then can educators affect change in the classroom to cultivate critical thinkers when the curriculum is not designed to feed each students own educational diet? There is not one magical quick fix, and I have come to realize that there has been and continued to be a cacophony of voices debating what should be …
Us Health Care Crisis: Implications For Education, Medical Praxis, And Democracy, Michael W. Kleinpeter
Us Health Care Crisis: Implications For Education, Medical Praxis, And Democracy, Michael W. Kleinpeter
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
This theoretical inquiry sought to critically analyze the various ideological and political aspects of the culture of health care reform in the United States (US) and to investigate the underlying ideologies, values, and purposes of medical practice in a changing democratic society. Using Michel Foucault's cultural studies approach as the theoretical framework for the study, agent and client relationships within the US health care system were examined in efforts to describe the articulation between the health care crisis and the government's social responsibility to prevent the imminent bankruptcy of its health care system. State and national data were collected from …
Progressive Education In Transition: An Intellectual History, Carolyn J. Faust
Progressive Education In Transition: An Intellectual History, Carolyn J. Faust
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
Using a critical, intellectual perspective that is supported as a conceptual framework and provides a solid basis for historical study, this theoretical research focused on the historical evidence of sustained progressive forms of education. The developments within the field of curriculum studies during the late 1800s transitioned through changes in the 1950s and 1960s and the movement forward with the reconceptualization of the field in the early 1970s were discussed. This reconceptualization of the field in the early 1970s provided a renewed texture from which to move forward in critiquing and changing curriculum theory. By understanding curriculum rather than focusing …

Inquiry Into The Latin And Spanish Cultural Presentations Of Spanish First Year Textbooks, Max Joe Young
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
This thesis uses critical theory perspectives and qualitative research methodology to explore the cultural content of three first-year Spanish textbooks. These three textbooks are currently being used or have been used recently in the region of southeastern Georgia. The researcher seeks to discover what cultural aspects are actually being presented to students who most likely have little knowledge of cultural expression in Latin America and Spain. The researcher also seeks to explore the Americanization of Latin culture. This study focuses upon three areas of cultural presentation found in the three texts: cultural paragraphs and essays, illustrations and photographs, and vocabulary. …

Clinicians’ Perception Of Inmates’ Satisfaction With Mental Health Services, Jerry B. Daniel, Wynne S. Korr
Clinicians’ Perception Of Inmates’ Satisfaction With Mental Health Services, Jerry B. Daniel, Wynne S. Korr
Journal of the Georgia Public Health Association
A growing body of literature addresses the mental health needs of prison inmates; however, very little research has examined mental health services among this population. Based on the Behavioral Model of Health Services Use (Andersen Model), the current study examined clinicians’ perception of inmates’ satisfaction with mental health services. The study’s main objective was to identify the effect of three major groups of predictor variables (predisposing, enabling, and need) on clinicians’ perception with inmates’ satisfaction with mental health services. The study utilized an exploratory, survey methodology. Although only a few variables were found to be statistically significant in the multivariate …

Modifying And Validating A Quality Of Life Measure To Fit Your Patient Population, Michelle R. Johnson, J Ross Maclean, Rebecca L. Rogers, Donna M. Fick, Andre Kallab
Journal of the Georgia Public Health Association
Introduction: A well-developed quality of life (QoL) instrument is valuable in identifying the burden of illness. We were interested in exploring whether existing QoL instruments were suitable for patients in our medical setting and, if not, whether this could be rectified by adapting an existing valid and reliable instrument to meet the specific needs of our patient population. For the purposes of this study, we chose to evaluate the quality of life of patients with breast cancer. Specifically, we were interested in two aspects of QoL in women with breast cancer. The first was whether existing instruments were pertinent to …
Relationship Of Fruit And Vegetable Servings And Self-Reported Diabetics In The Southeast And Northeast, Marylen Rimando, Faye Lopez, Haritha Battula
Relationship Of Fruit And Vegetable Servings And Self-Reported Diabetics In The Southeast And Northeast, Marylen Rimando, Faye Lopez, Haritha Battula
Journal of the Georgia Public Health Association
According to the American Diabetes Association, most diabetic patients are not consuming the recommended 3-5 servings of vegetables and 2-4 servings of fruits a day. This study examined fruit and vegetable servings of self-reported diabetics (N=35,407) in select southeastern and northeastern states using Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) 2005 data. The estimate for both fruit and vegetable servings and self-reported diabetes was determined using multivariate logistic regression, adjusting for sociodemographics and geographic region. The results indicated a significant difference between fruit and vegetable servings for diabetics and non-diabetics (p<0.0001). A higher percentage of diabetics in the northeast consumed more than three servings of fruit and vegetables when compared to diabetics in the southeast. Respondents in the northeast were 21% more likely to consume five or more servings of fruit and vegetables and 16% less likely to be diabetic than those in the southeast after adjusting for age, race, sex, and geographic region. In conclusion, diabetics in the northeast consumed more servings of fruit and vegetables than did those in the southeast. Multiple factors influence fruit and vegetable consumption and diabetes and should be considered when developing targeted nutritional interventions. Diabetes educators, nurses, and physicians can encourage diabetic patients to consume more fruit and vegetables and motivate them to continue eating fruit and vegetables.

L’Appel Des Arènes: A Postcolonial Development Of The Buildungsroman, Médoune Guèye
L’Appel Des Arènes: A Postcolonial Development Of The Buildungsroman, Médoune Guèye
The Coastal Review
Despite the fact that many critics consider the Buildungsroman obsolete, the genre is still alive. Many African writers have revised the classical Buildungsroman in order to underscore the conflict of cultures and the complex subjectivities of their characters. By analyzing the discourse on identity in L’Appel des arènes, we understand how Aminata Sow Fall recreates the modalities of enunciation found in African traditional literature while structuringL’Appel des arènes with generic patterns from the Buildungsroman.
