Administrators' Beliefs Regarding The Effectiveness Of Alternatively Certified Teachers, Jack D. Arrington

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

This study examined the beliefs held by school administrators regarding the effectiveness of alternatively certified teachers in the Georgia Teacher Academy for Preparation and Pedagogy (GaTAPP). The study sought to identify specific strengths and weaknesses of alternatively certified teachers. Face-to-face interviews were conducted with eight public school administrators, four from the middle school level and four from the high school level, in an eastern Georgia county. The interview questions were developed using the categories of evaluation outlined in the Georgia Teacher Observation Instrument. The Relationship Between Distributed Leadership As Practiced By Principals And The Organizational Commitment Of Teachers, Gregory Edmond Jacobs May 2010

The Relationship Between Distributed Leadership As Practiced By Principals And The Organizational Commitment Of Teachers, Gregory Edmond Jacobs

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

The purpose of this study is to determine the degree of the relationship between distributed leadership as perceived by teachers and the affective commitment of teachers. Participants in this study were administered an instrument containing two surveys, the revised Affective Commitment Scale (ACS) (Allen & Meyer, 1990) and the Leadership Density Inventory (LDI) (Smith, Ross, & Robichaux, 2004). The ACS was used to assess the participants' level of affective commitment, and the LDI was used to measure the practice of distributed leadership in the participants' schools. The surveys were distributed to teachers in fifteen schools located in four school districts …

Kinship: Margaret Mitchell's Gone With The Wind And The Irish Big House Genre, Patricia Homer May 2010

Kinship: Margaret Mitchell's Gone With The Wind And The Irish Big House Genre, Patricia Homer

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

Critics have largely dismissed Margaret Mitchell's best-selling novel Gone with the Wind as a serious work of literature. Although various references to Irish culture permeate Gone with the Wind, the novel has not been compared to any Irish literature or mythology. This thesis compares Gone with the Wind with Irish Big House literature and mythology through the lens of biography and history. The works of William Butler Yeats, Maria Edgeworth, and Edith Somerville and Martin Ross are also employed to show evidence of the connection of Gone with the Wind to Irish Big House literature. This comparison results in a …

The Lived Experiences Of Female Superintendents In Alabama, Florida, And Georgia, Ruth Denette Odum May 2010

The Lived Experiences Of Female Superintendents In Alabama, Florida, And Georgia, Ruth Denette Odum

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

Although women actively seek advancement and constitute the majority of teachers in American public schools, they do not occupy many of the decision-making, administrative, or superintendency positions in education. This paper presents a perspective on the problem of women's lack of progression from entry-level positions of leadership through superintendency. A qualitative, phenomenological methodology is used to illuminate the lived experiences of 16 women who were active in the position of American public school superintendent during the 2008-2009 academic year. The superintendents were of varied age, race, and family/marital status. The researcher describes the voice of women superintendents and their personal …

The Impact Of Mentoring On Beginning Teachers In A Rural Northeast Georgia School District, Judy E. Palmer May 2010

The Impact Of Mentoring On Beginning Teachers In A Rural Northeast Georgia School District, Judy E. Palmer

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

The needs of beginning teachers have been addressed both on the state and national level because of increasing concerns about teacher quality and teacher shortage problems. Schools experience high rates of attrition for beginning teachers, more than forty percent in the first five years of teaching. Within the next decade, school districts will have to hire a large number of teachers for grades k-12. The traditional sink-or-swim induction of teachers contributes to lower levels of teacher effectiveness such as curriculum and behavioral issues and higher levels of teacher attrition. Beginning teachers experience isolation, difficult students, curriculum challenges, and inadequate preparation …

Cultivating Global Citizenship? Life In Transit, Jeffrey Matthew Palis May 2010

Cultivating Global Citizenship? Life In Transit, Jeffrey Matthew Palis

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

This study explores my border crossing experience among and between cultures. Although a large portion of my narrative addresses my time living as a Fulbright grantee in Latvia, this study is much more than a solitary six-month sojourn. It is a lifelong journey and an attempt to understand what is entailed when we cross physical, cultural, linguistic, socio-political, and intellectual borders. Four bodies of research provide the theoretical framework for the study: critical theory (Apple, 2001; Aronowitz and Giroux, 1993; Ayers, 2006; Chomsky, 2004, 2006; McLaren, 1997, 2005; Giroux, 1992; Zinn, 1980, 2007), exile and borderland pedagogy (Anzaldúa, 1987; Freire …

The Experience Of Christian Prayer In Coaching: A Qualitative Investigation, Trevor J. Egli May 2010

The Experience Of Christian Prayer In Coaching: A Qualitative Investigation, Trevor J. Egli

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

There have been studies, which have examined the lived experience of Christian athletes' use of prayer (Czech et al., 2004); however, no published research has sought to understand how a Christian coach may utilize prayer. The purpose of this study was to gather a narrative of the lived experience of collegiate Division I Christian head coaches' use of prayer within their profession. A humanistic framework, specifically existential-phenomenology, which was centered on seeing the individual being interviewed as the expert on the matter at hand (Dale, 1996) was used to allow for an information rich and detailed description of the coaches' …

Exercise Adherence Following Short Term Weight Loss Programs, Justine Coleman May 2010

Exercise Adherence Following Short Term Weight Loss Programs, Justine Coleman

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

The dramatic increase in obesity has captured the attention of the government, private foundations, and the media for several years. One media outlet, reality television, a social phenomenon, has pushed the epidemic into the public eye (Finklestein, Brown, & Evans, 2008). One of the most popular weight loss programs on television is the Biggest Loser. The popularity of the television show has been a possible catalyst of the epidemic of similar weight loss programs in community gyms, recreation settings, and even within universities around the United States. The purpose of this study was to conduct a follow up assessment with …

The Life Cycle Of A Pandemic Crisis: Sars Impact On Air Travel, Jun Liu, Steven E. Moss, Jonathan Zhang Apr 2010

The Life Cycle Of A Pandemic Crisis: Sars Impact On Air Travel, Jun Liu, Steven E. Moss, Jonathan Zhang

Logistics & Supply Chain Management: Faculty Presentations (1998-2020)

This paper studies the effects of the SARS outbreak on air travel between the US and three destinations; China, Hong Kong and Taiwan. ARIMA models with interventions are used to estimate the timing, depth and shape of SARS impact on international air travel. Links between empirical findings and a conceptual framework for analyzing the life cycle of a crisis are established. The conceptual framework uses situational choice and governmental public relations differences by location to explain the response patterns to the crises. The research finds significant evidence that the impact and life cycle of SARS effect on air travel varies …

The Effect Of Anxiety On The Measurement Of Reading Fluency And Comprehension, Jeffrey A. Tysinger, P. Dawn Tysinger, Terry D. Diamanduros Apr 2010

The Effect Of Anxiety On The Measurement Of Reading Fluency And Comprehension, Jeffrey A. Tysinger, P. Dawn Tysinger, Terry D. Diamanduros

Georgia Educational Researcher

The purpose of the current study was to examine the relationship between anxiety and performance on measures of reading fluency and reading comprehension in fourth, fifth, and sixth grade students. The study found that there is a significant negative correlation between social anxiety and reading comprehension but no significant correlation between social anxiety and reading fluency. These findings further demonstrate the distinction between the cognitive processes that underlie reading fluency and reading comprehension. The results also align with the tenets of Processing Efficiency Theory in that more complex tasks that significantly tax working memory (like reading comprehension) are more likely …

Excerpt: "As many of you have heard, Georgia Southern University is facing the possibility of deep budget cuts for next year. The full extent of those cuts will not be known until a final state budget is approved later in the spring, but the cuts will undoubtedly impact the University in significant ways. I will pass along additional information on the College budget in next month's Class Notes. For now, we would greatly appreciate your support in letting your state legislators know how important higher education and Georgia Southern University are to the future of Georgia."
