Using Dark Triad Personality To Understand And Moderate Jay Customer Behavior In Hospitality, Scott M. Widmier, Prachi Gala, Iason Koufodontis

AMTP Proceedings 2024

Jay Customers are customers who act in a thoughtless or abusive way, causing problems for the firm, its employees, and other customers. Currently, the only way to identify Jay Customers is by their actions when it is already too late to prevent the negative consequences. This research tested and confirmed the use of Dark Triad personality (Narcissism, Machiavellianism, and Psychopathy) to identify individuals prone to Jay Customer behavior prior to its manifestation. Dark Triad personalities have distinctive characteristics that can be used to identify them along with a growing body of research on prescriptive actions to dissuade their disruptive behaviors. …

Segmenting The Retired Travelers Market: An Approach Based On Travel Barriers, Corinne Chevalier, Gaelle M. Moal

AMTP Proceedings 2024

In a context of intensive demographic ageing, older travelers make a strategic target for tourism professionals. The latter need to understand their travel behavior well, including what might prevent them from travelling as often as they wish they would. This research identifies travel barriers at old age, presents a travel barrier measurement scale and applies it to the French senior travelers’ market. The resulting segmentation is presented, and recommendations made to help tourism professionals adapt their offers to this specific target.

Unraveling The Impact Of Political Identity On Artificial Intelligence Interactions, Michael Thomas, Yuan Li

AMTP Proceedings 2024

Marketing environment becomes more dynamic with technology advancement and the salience of political identity. Yet how political identity influences consumers’ interaction with technology, particularly with AI, remains unknown. This study examines this important question and proposes that political identity can have a subtle influence on consumers’ intention to interact with AI. Specifically, conservatives are more likely to have a favorable intention to interact with chatbots, a better evaluation of customers, and a more positive brand attitude. The findings of our research will contribute to the nuanced understanding about political identity and human technology interaction.

Education For The Future: Higher Education’S Evolving Role In Entrepreneurial And Innovative Learning, Elnora D. Farmer

Georgia Educational Research Association Conference

Policymakers, educators, and employers have argued that higher education should play a pivotal role in shaping the professions of tomorrow as the traditional workforce evolves into an increasingly entrepreneurial, innovative, and global workspace (Srinivasan et al., 2022). From their perspective, an entrepreneurial approach to learning can prepare students for occupational uncertainties, unique professional opportunities, and organizational fluidity (Hua et al, 2022; Salem, 2014). Although many colleges and universities perceive the importance of cultivating entrepreneurial skills, challenges concerning adaptive curriculum design, faculty development, and resource allocation can impact institutions’ ability to effectively impart entrepreneurial knowledge to students. This presentation offers insights …

Learning Science With Arts-Integrated Lessons: Student Experiences, Oliver Ellis, Lorraine C. Schmertzing, Richard Schmertzing

Georgia Educational Research Association Conference

Using a narrative approach (Clandinin & Connelly, 2004; Kim, 2016) to collect stories and explore the meaning six fine arts school graduates found in their arts-integrated learning (AIL) experiences in their science classes, vignettes (Seidman, 2019) of participants were developed to tell their stories and maintain the context (Maxwell & Miller, 2008) of their unique experiences while coding and categorizing strategies were used during data analysis to construct four themes that ran across participant experiences. Themes focused were supported by participants’ qualitative data (Maxwell, 2013) that were gathered using Seidman’s (2019) three-phase interview series and analyzed using Saldaña’s (2015) in …

A High-Leverage Practice Rubric For Conducting An Assessment-Focused Parent-Teacher Conference, Deana J. Ford, Sara E. Luke

Georgia Educational Research Association Conference

This study addresses the critical need for systematic tools in teacher education programs to teach and assess High Leverage Practices (HLPs) effectively. While HLPs are established as foundational teaching practices, varying levels of research support their efficacy. Rubrics, widely used in higher education, are underexplored in terms of validity and reliability in education. Authentic assessment, characterized by real-life tasks, offers a solution to academic misconduct while providing learners with autonomy and engagement. This study introduces the High Leverage Practice Rubric for Assessment (HLPR-A) as an analytic rubric tailored for assessing special education preservice teachers during parent-teacher conferences, a crucial aspect …

debated and left out of some elementary school curriculums. Babarro & Perez

Lopez (2022) provide evidence explaining handwriting should be taught in

elementary school using a meta-analysis and meta-synthesis of research from

2000 to 2020. The authors selected 31 studies including 2,030 students in grades

kindergarten through 6. When compared to no instruction different handwriting

interventions yielded a 0.64 effect size. Strategies used to improve handwriting

fluency provided a 0.49 effect size. Hemphill (2003) supplied quantitatively based

guidelines from two meta-analyses to explain an effect size of .30 and …

Theater Therapy : Using Stage Management To Teach Students With Disabilities, Melvin S. Marsh Feb 2024

Theater Therapy : Using Stage Management To Teach Students With Disabilities, Melvin S. Marsh

Georgia Educational Research Association Conference

While much of theater therapy has focused on acting, there are other sections of the theatrical world which might be useful to help teach and focus other useful skills to students who have special needs. Stage managers, the unsung and often times unnoticed heroes of the theater community, require many basic skills that could be very helpful for students to learn and practice including organization skills, time management, social skills, basic leadership skills, and at higher ends project management. While not every student with special needs will be able to manage and master all of the skills that a stage …

Does Where We Live Matter To Oral Health? Tensions Between Rural Older Adults’ Concept Of Community And Health Individualism, Swaha Pattanaik, April M. Schueths Dr., Raymona H. Lawrence, Bettye A. Apenteng, Georgia Dounis

Sociology & Anthropology: Faculty Publications

Oral health is essential to overall health; however, structural obstacles influence older rural residents' oral health outcomes, especially those from disadvantaged backgrounds in the South. Poor oral health is typically attributed to individual choices, shifting the focus from the inconspicuous community influences, making it more difficult for older rural people to obtain oral healthcare. This qualitative study explores how older adults in rural Georgia understand the community's role in shaping their oral health. Twenty-two older adults were interviewed from five rural communities in southeast Georgia. Participants defined their community in geographic terms. Community barriers and self-reliance emerged as themes of …

Feasibility Of Influencing Clinician Perceived Knowledge And Competence Of Human Trafficking Via A Continuing Education Workshop, Rachel Wakefield Jan 2024

Feasibility Of Influencing Clinician Perceived Knowledge And Competence Of Human Trafficking Via A Continuing Education Workshop, Rachel Wakefield

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

Previous research has examined the complex mental and social health deficits of those who were trafficked that clinicians have to treat therapeutically (Litam, 2017; Pascual-Leone et al., 2017). Other research has explored how continuing education workshops often change the knowledge, competence, and attitudes of attendees to use more effective and evidenced techniques and skills (Neimeyer et al., 2009; Raghavan et al., 2008). However, there is a lack of understanding about how a complex topic, specifically treatment considerations of those who were trafficked, changes the knowledge and competence of continuing education workshop attendees. The purpose of the current study is to …

Exploring Cooperative Learning In High School Remedial And Test Preparation Classes, Carol Solomon-Jenkins

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

This dissertation explores how utilizing cooperative learning in remedial and test preparation in high school classes affects students’ reading comprehension on traditional standardized test scores. Theoretically, my dissertation work draws upon several bodies of literature, such as constructivism including cognitive and social constructivism in relation to cooperative learning (e.g., Dewey, 1897, 1902/1932, 1910; Piaget, 1967; Vygotsky, 1978), culturally responsive/relevant/sustaining pedagogy (e.g., Gay, 2000/2010/2018; González, Moll, & Amanti, 2005; Ladson-Billings, 1994/2009; Ladson-Billings, 2021; Paris & Alim, 2017), and caring and empathy (Noddings, 1984, 1992, 2002; Katz, Noddings, & Strike, 1999; Merriam, 1991; Stake, 1995, 2005) in relation to social justice education. …

So Much Courage: Hemingway, War, And Rape, Tracie Nicolai Jan 2024

So Much Courage: Hemingway, War, And Rape, Tracie Nicolai

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

Weaving together Ernest Hemingway’s biography and literature with her own life, Tracie Nicolai analyzes the impact of Hemingway’s life and literature in the classroom and outside of it. War trauma is analyzed in relation to rape and its lasting effects, paralleling the impacts and the traumas that shape our philosophies and our lives. Nicolai explores how Hemingway wrote of war and his own injuries, and she discusses the distance evident between his own life experiences and his subsequent fiction writings. In separate vignettes in each chapter, Nicolai writes of her experience as a rape survivor and the lasting impact on …

At-Risk Children: Adult Perception And Recognition Of Mental Health Concerns, Abby D. Lucas Jan 2024

At-Risk Children: Adult Perception And Recognition Of Mental Health Concerns, Abby D. Lucas

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

Approximately 20% of children ages nine to 17 in the United States struggle with mental health concerns each year (Gamm et al., 2010). Early identification of child and adolescent mental health concerns is crucial for initiating treatment to prevent recurrence or persistence of pathology into adulthood (Logan & King, 2001). Children are primarily dependent upon adults in their lives (e.g., parents/caregivers, education professionals, healthcare providers) to recognize mental health concerns and seek services (Sayal et al., 2010). Providing these adults with guidance on how to appropriately identify and recognize these mental health needs in children is critical (Crouch et al., …

Development Of A Novel Measure To Assess For Alcohol Misuse In Older Adults: The Alcohol Misuse Scale For Older Adults (Amsoa), Nathan Jensen Jan 2024

Development Of A Novel Measure To Assess For Alcohol Misuse In Older Adults: The Alcohol Misuse Scale For Older Adults (Amsoa), Nathan Jensen

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

Alcohol is the most regularly used intoxicating substance in most geographic locations. Alcohol use in the United States specifically is well over global averages. While alcohol misuse is generally considered to be understood as a problem for younger adults, it is often unrecognized and understudied older adult populations. Currently, there is an absence of a comprehensive tool measuring for developmentally salient behaviors, symptoms, and features of alcohol misuse in older adulthood, which blocks researchers’ ability to measure alcohol misuse well. The purpose of this study is to develop a psychometrically valid and reliable assessment of alcohol misuse for older adult …

"Shut Down And Closed Off": A Routine Activity Approach To Investigating The Relationship Between Covid-19 School Closures And Child Sexual Abuse Report Characteristics In Georgia, Spencer E. Riner Jan 2024

"Shut Down And Closed Off": A Routine Activity Approach To Investigating The Relationship Between Covid-19 School Closures And Child Sexual Abuse Report Characteristics In Georgia, Spencer E. Riner

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

The COVID-19 pandemic of 2020 created a public health crisis that led to an unprecedented number of school closures. A major concern raised by child advocates, law enforcement, and social service providers was the possible increase in undetected child abuse and maltreatment. Undergirding this concern was the belief that this mitigation effort might place child abuse victims and offenders within proximity for extended periods of time. While this was a significant concern, it has rarely been analyzed empirically. To address this gap in the literature, this thesis investigates how school closures impacted the characteristics of child sexual abuse (CSA) reports …

Examining The Relationship Between Puberty And Trauma Symptomatology, Justina M. Harsche

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

This study sought to examine the relation between puberty and trauma symptomatology in young adults. More specifically, does it matter what developmental period one is in when trauma occurs? Additionally, geographical region was examined as it relates to receiving and reporting mental health services and later trauma symptoms. Using data from 362 students at Georgia Southern University, multiple analyses were conducted. A Moderation Analysis where adverse events served as the predictor, trauma symptomatology as the outcome variable, and the developmental period in which the trauma occurred as the moderator was conducted. The interactions for this hypothesis were not significant. However, …

There And Back Again: Nick Adams' Masculine Journey From 'Indian Camp' To 'Fathers And Sons.', Michael F. Basista

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

In the following paper, I discuss how Ernest Hemingway’s hyper-masculine persona influences how his male characters are interpreted by some readers. More specifically, I take the character of Nick Adams and look at him as being a representation of one of Hemingway’s male characters that diverges from the hyper-masculine persona that Hemingway had created for himself. To do so, I focus on eight of Hemingway’s short stories, with those being “Indian Camp,” “The Doctor and the Doctor’s Wife,” “Ten Indians,” “The End of Something,” “The Three-Day Blow,” “The Battler,” “Cross-Country Snow,” and “Fathers and Sons.” The development of Nick Adams …
