Repetition And Judgment Of Learning In Wind Instrument Practice, Laura A. Stambaugh Jan 2011

Repetition And Judgment Of Learning In Wind Instrument Practice, Laura A. Stambaugh

School of Music: Faculty Publications

This study draws on two existing lines of research: blocked and random practice orders and judgment of learning. University wind and brass students practiced three short technical tasks in either a repetitive order or a random order during two practice sessions. Retention testing occurred 24 hours and 1 week after the second practice session. Performances were evaluated for accuracy, speed, and evenness. Woodwind players benefited from a random practice order. A secondary research question was drawn from judgment of learning research in motor learning and metacognition. At the end of the second practice session, participants predicted the metronome marking at …

Scholarship Of Teaching And Teachers' Understanding Of Subject Matter, Keith Trigwell Jan 2011

Scholarship Of Teaching And Teachers' Understanding Of Subject Matter, Keith Trigwell

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

When college teachers’ experience of teaching and their experience of the subject matter they are teaching are analysed in terms of parts and wholes, an underlying relational structure is found. Where the teachers’ subject matter focus is on wholes (or wholes made up of parts), their teaching approaches are more strongly related to high quality student learning. When the subject matter focus is more on parts (or parts making up wholes) teacher-focused transmission approaches to teaching are more likely. If the scholarship of teaching involves making more visible what teachers do to make learning possible (so that it may become …

The Unscholarly Use Of Numbers In Our Assessment Practices: What Will Make Us Change?, Chris Rust Jan 2011

The Unscholarly Use Of Numbers In Our Assessment Practices: What Will Make Us Change?, Chris Rust

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

Excerpt: On being invited to write something informative or evocative. I really couldn't resist the temptation to be a little provocative and return to a theme that I have touched on before (Rust, 2007), and is a particular bête noir of mine. Although I have to admit that, given I have no reason to believe that what I wrote previously has had any discernable impact, there is a slight sense of futility even as...

Making Your Case: Ten Questions For Departments And Individuals Building An Argument For Work In Discipline-Centered Education, Brian Paul Coppola Jan 2011

Making Your Case: Ten Questions For Departments And Individuals Building An Argument For Work In Discipline-Centered Education, Brian Paul Coppola

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

Excerpt: In our chapter, "Is the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning New to Chemistry?," Dennis Jacobs and I outlined the different ways in which education-focused faculty members have been represented in departments of chemistry (Coppola & Jacobs, 2002). Briefly, these include (a) a long-standing tradition of chemistry professors publishing in the 86-year-old Journal of Chemical Education, (b) the rise of the "chemical educators, " as a division of the American Chemical Society, (c) the growth of the Chemical Education Research community (similar to the disciplinary...

Improving Group Functioning In Solving Realistic Problems, Sassan Asgari, Gloria Dall'alba Jan 2011

Improving Group Functioning In Solving Realistic Problems, Sassan Asgari, Gloria Dall'alba

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

Group work in educational settings has several advantages, but it is also associated with some difficulties, most commonly concerns about group functioning. The aim of this study was to improve group functioning in solving realistic problems, using a combination of: 1) team skill training prior to group work; 2) peer and self-assessment to evaluate contribution to group work; and 3) lecturer-designed versus student-designed problems. The results showed positive effects on group functioning. After initial team skill training, peer assessments and moderation of marks based on those assessments stimulated the so-called free loaders to improve their contributions to group work, which …

Impact Of Giving Students A Choice Of Homework Assignments In An Introductory Computer Science Class, Steven Fulton, Dino Schweitzer Jan 2011

Impact Of Giving Students A Choice Of Homework Assignments In An Introductory Computer Science Class, Steven Fulton, Dino Schweitzer

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

Student assignments have long been an integral part of many university level computer science courses to reinforce material covered in class with practical exercises. For years, researchers have studied ways to improve such student assignments by making them more interesting, applicable, and valuable to the student with a goal of improving learning outcomes by increasing student appeal. One often studied way to improve the learning outcome is by allowing students a choice in assignments. To ensure fairness for all students in providing such a choice, care must be taken to ensure assignment “equality” by ensuring an equal learning experience for …

Which Way To Sotl Utopia?, John D. Draeger, Linda Price Jan 2011

Which Way To Sotl Utopia?, John D. Draeger, Linda Price

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

Where is the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) movement headed? This paper offers a vision for the future by using an Aristotelian model of virtue to sketch an account of intellectual habits. We argue that these habits allow students, teachers, and scholars to engage in the endless pursuit of learning. We call this place ‘SoTL Utopia’ as the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning is the vehicle that allows us to reach this destination. While utopian, we argue that these habits will improve learning in higher education through more ubiquitous engagement in SoTL.

The Relationship Between Scholarly Teaching And Sotl: Models, Distinctions, And Clarifications, Michael K. Potter, Erika D.H. Kustra Jan 2011

The Relationship Between Scholarly Teaching And Sotl: Models, Distinctions, And Clarifications, Michael K. Potter, Erika D.H. Kustra

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

We examine, through conceptual analysis and investigation of the available literature, some commonly assumed models of the relationship between SoTL and scholarly teaching, demonstrate how those models fare against the conceptual and empirical evidence, and propose an alternative that better represents the concepts involved. Both our definitions and the model we choose to represent their relationship impact our decisions regarding policies, programs, and resources. If the assumptions behind these practices are not warranted, our reflexive use, dissemination and propagation of these practices must be questioned.

Lighting Up The Mind: Transforming Learning Through The Applied Scholarship Of Cognitive Neuroscience, Daniel J. Glisczinski Jan 2011

Lighting Up The Mind: Transforming Learning Through The Applied Scholarship Of Cognitive Neuroscience, Daniel J. Glisczinski

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

"I am as sick of boring presentations as you are" admitted Medina (2008, p. 93), explaining how the typical academic lecture embodies the antithesis of scholarly, brain-rich teaching and learning. In contrast to what Kohn (1999, p. 218) decried as the "mind numbing" monotony of even the most well intended academic monologues, Medina explained that brains retain lessons learned through concrete experiences with emotionally cogent and relevant stimuli. Are such research-based insights the sort Boyer (1990) was invoking in Scholarship Reconsidered, which made the case for a new standard of scholarly teaching and learning? Thinking so, this essay synthesizes …

A Scholarly Approach To Assessing Learning, Catherine Wehlburg Jan 2011

A Scholarly Approach To Assessing Learning, Catherine Wehlburg

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

Excerpt: Assessing learning in higher education is what faculty do. We teach, our students learn, and we check their learning to ensure that they are, indeed, grasping what we want them to understand. Assessment of learning is nothing new, and faculty do it better than most. But mention the word “assessment” in a gathering of faculty colleagues, and you are likely to start a stampede away from you. Why is this? Why is something that is such an integral part of teaching and learning considered anathema?

Global Outsourcing: A Study Of Student Attitudes, Michael P. Mcdonald, Darrell Parker, Angela M. Leverett, Sara J. Grimes, John Leaptrott

Management: Faculty Publications

The practice of global outsourcing by U.S.A. companies is frequently the source of heated debate. Recently a Wall Street Journal-NBC News poll found that 86% of Americans believe that outsourcing is the number one factor contributing to the country’s continuing economic distress. This study presents the results of a survey designed to assess the attitudes toward global outsourcing among business students and non business students at a large regional university in the Southeast U.S.A. A survey of attitudes toward global outsourcing was administered to 284 undergraduate and graduate students. Descriptive statistics, frequencies and MANOVA methods were used to analyze the …

The Relationships Between Optimism And Pessimism And Burnout In Youth Soccer Players, Brandy A. Rentz Jan 2011

The Relationships Between Optimism And Pessimism And Burnout In Youth Soccer Players, Brandy A. Rentz

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

Sport related burnout has become a concern for many athletes, coaches, and sport psychologists. Although burnout in sport is receiving more attention, the research still remains relatively limited (Capel, 1986; Dale & Weinberg, 1990; Fender, 1989; Gould, Udry, Tuffey, & Loehr, 1996). Dale and Weinberg (1990) indicated a need for future research concerning the identification of characteristics that may predispose athletes to burnout. No past research was found that investigated the relationship between optimism/pessimism and sport burnout. The primary purpose of this investigation was to examine the relationships between optimism and pessimism with burnout. A secondary purpose was to determine …

Needed Supports Of Middle Grade Teachers In Georgia During Times Of Stress And Burnout, Kania Greer Jan 2011

Needed Supports Of Middle Grade Teachers In Georgia During Times Of Stress And Burnout, Kania Greer

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

Understanding what teachers need to help them relieve occupational stress can help administrators effectively combat teacher burnout. With the multiple roles teachers play, it is easy to see how role conflict, role ambiguity, and role overload increase the chances that a teacher will suffer from occupational related stress and subsequent burnout. If left unalleviated, teachers may begin to feel emotionally exhausted, detached from their colleagues, and lack feelings of personal accomplishment which can lead to burnout. The purpose of this study was to ascertain what teachers would like to see administrators do to help them combat the day-to-day stresses of …

A Study Of Effective Strategies, Programs, And Policies For School Leaders In Protecting Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, And Transgender Youth From Peer Victimization, Laura Ann Bacon Jan 2011

A Study Of Effective Strategies, Programs, And Policies For School Leaders In Protecting Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, And Transgender Youth From Peer Victimization, Laura Ann Bacon

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

This study examined what school leaders can do to protect lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) youth from peer victimization and identified effective strategies, programs, and policies that school leaders can implement in their schools to reduce the level of peer victimization experienced by LGBT youth. Students who identify as LGBT are often victimized by their peers (Chan, 2009; Kosciw, 2004; Markow & Fein, 2005; Weiler, 2004; Williams, Connolly, Pepler, & Craig, 2005). Peer victimization has a negative impact on the academic and psychological development of students, especially those in the sexual minority. LGBT youth are at a greater risk …

The Impact Of Response To Intervention On Special Education Identification, Naesha Parks Jan 2011

The Impact Of Response To Intervention On Special Education Identification, Naesha Parks

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

Response to intervention is a process designed to provide students with interventions before they are identified as students who are served through special education services as students who have disabilities. RTI is a general education initiative that allows students to receive targeted interventions in their areas of weakness before they are referred to special education. The implementation of RTI has had a significant effect of education. This study explored the perceptions of how teachers and administrators felt regarding special education identification since the implementation of RTI. This study makes both theoretical and practical contributions to the fields of education and …

Does Self-Complexity Predict Dishonest Behavior Via Cognitive Dissonance?, William H. Heath Jan 2011

Does Self-Complexity Predict Dishonest Behavior Via Cognitive Dissonance?, William H. Heath

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

Psychologists disagree about what, if any, benefit high self-complexity might provide. Although Linville (1987) demonstrated that high complexity buffers against stress, other studies have found that it leads to more negative outcomes in the long term (Diehl et al., 2001). Cognitive dissonance is an important factor in regulating behavior, particularly moral behavior (Aronson, Fried, & Stone, 1999), and may explain how self-complexity leads to negative life outcomes. The present study examined if high self-complexity might buffer against the tension of cognitive dissonance, thus increasing the likelihood of dishonest behavior. Participants completed a selfcomplexity measure, and then they completed a dissonance-rousing …

Using A Flow-Chart To Reduce Juror's Pre-Existing Biases In Cases Utilizing The Insanity Defense, Lauren M. Schlumper Jan 2011

Using A Flow-Chart To Reduce Juror's Pre-Existing Biases In Cases Utilizing The Insanity Defense, Lauren M. Schlumper

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

Many people believe that the insanity defense is used to avoid responsibility for committing a crime and that it returns dangerous individuals back to the streets. Due to the fact that it is difficult to separate such pre-existing attitudes from evidence presented throughout the trial, many jurors use their attitudes to assist them when deciding a verdict and punishment. For example, Steblay, Hosch, Culhane & McWethy (2006) found that not only is it difficult for jurors to disregard information that is not relevant or presented during trial, but that pre-trial information and attitudes can actually influence their verdict. The present …

Purgatory's Place In The South: A Black Woman's Journey To The Promised Land, Consuela Jean Ward Jan 2011

Purgatory's Place In The South: A Black Woman's Journey To The Promised Land, Consuela Jean Ward

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

Using critical race theory (Delgado & Stefancic, 2001; Ladson-Billings, 2003; Stovall, 2005), Black feminist thought (Collins, 2000), and identity theory of oppression (Hardiman & Jackson, 1997) as the theoretical framework and autobiographical narrative inquiry (He, 2003; Moody,1968; Angleou, 1969; Hurston, 1965; hooks,1996; Jacobs, 1861) as the methodology, I explored the formal and informal educational experiences I received and reciprocated in Black church ideology and white schools and how they shaped my identity and lived experience as a Black woman in the South. I chronicled paradigm shifts in my thinking along my journey from Black Christian fundamentalism and poverty to a …
