Librarianship After Detours: The Path Of Second Career Librarians, Carrie Moran, Erica England, Jenna Settles Sep 2015

Librarianship After Detours: The Path Of Second Career Librarians, Carrie Moran, Erica England, Jenna Settles

Georgia International Conference on Information Literacy

Librarianship is often a second career path, and librarians typically have varied academic backgrounds. A librarian’s academic and professional career prior to librarianship can impact and inform one’s library career, particularly outreach and instruction activities related to information literacy.

This panel will feature three librarians who will discuss how their diverse backgrounds have impacted the way they work with students within and outside of the classroom. Two of the librarians are from public research universities, and one represents a large two year college system. Their academic backgrounds include degrees in Psychology, English, and Business, while their professional backgrounds include crisis …

Rebooting A Technical Writing Course: Control Instructional Design, Alt Information Literacy, And Delete Non-Collaboration, Kelly Diamond, Gregg Thumm

Georgia International Conference on Information Literacy

Members of this panel, an instructional design librarian and a teaching faculty member, began collaborating in summer 2014 to revise and redesign English 305: Scientific and Technical Writing; the faculty instructor wanted to improve this course by redesigning it based on instructional design principles, but also to include more information literacy instruction into this online course.

This panel will discuss faculty’s perceived problems with the initial version of the class, including lack of student participation and poor choices of research materials for assignments. We will discuss how we tried to eliminate those deficiencies through instructional design and redesigning authentic assignments …

Assessing The Effectiveness Of A Pre-Class Intervention In Establishing An Information Literacy Baseline, Adelia B. Grabowsky Sep 2015

Assessing The Effectiveness Of A Pre-Class Intervention In Establishing An Information Literacy Baseline, Adelia B. Grabowsky

Georgia International Conference on Information Literacy

It is expected that undergraduates entering a BSN clinical program as juniors will possess basic information literacy skills. The reality is that skills vary widely, complicating efforts to provide more advanced, discipline-specific instruction. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness of a pre-class intervention intended to establish an information literacy baseline in newly admitted nursing students. Setting/Participants: Nursing students in the first clinical semester of a BSN program at a large, southeastern, research university. Intervention: Before attending a library instruction class, students watch a short video and complete a worksheet which they bring to class. Outcome Measures: …

Confident Or Not: How Students Explain Their Confidence Regarding Research Abilities, Andrea Brooks Sep 2015

Confident Or Not: How Students Explain Their Confidence Regarding Research Abilities, Andrea Brooks

Georgia International Conference on Information Literacy

The affective dimension of learning considers emotions, feelings, and attitudes as a student makes sense of a subject. In several studies surrounding the information search process, Carol Kuhlthau (1991) emphasized the importance of feelings when students take on a research project, including their confidence. Confidence is one trait that has been used to measure affective learning connected with information literacy abilities. Quantitative analysis has shown student confidence levels do increase after library instruction (Rimland, 2013). However, high confidence does not necessarily indicate ability, and less competent students may even have an inflated sense of their information literacy skills (Gross and …

The Impact Of The Immediate Feedback Assessment Technique On Course Evaluations, Trent W. Maurer, Jerri Kropp Sep 2015

The Impact Of The Immediate Feedback Assessment Technique On Course Evaluations, Trent W. Maurer, Jerri Kropp

Human Ecology: Faculty Publications

This project reports the results of two studies that investigated the impact on course evaluations of using partial credit iterative responding (PCIR) with the Immediate Feedback Assessment Technique (IF-AT) forms on summative course assessments. This project also quantifies grade inflation from utilizing different PCIR schemes and documents the percentage of possible partial credit students learned. Study 1 compared evaluations in courses where exams were manipulated. Study 2 compared evaluations in courses where daily reading quizzes were manipulated. Results from Study 1 revealed that multiple course evaluation scores increased 10% in the PCIR condition. Students earned 75% of the partial credit …

Exploring Cyber Harassment Among Women Who Use Social Media, Sloane Burke Winkelman, Jody Oomen-Early, Ashley D. Walker, Lawrence Chu, Alice Yick-Flanagan

Community Health: Faculty Publications

The number of Internet users around the word is at an all-time high. The majority of North Americans are internet users and over two-thirds participate in some kind of social network (i.e. Facebook, Twitter, etc.). Social networks and mobile technology enable individuals to connect instantaneously or asynchronously, across geographic boundaries publicly or anonymously. Few studies exploring cyber harassment have been conducted, primarily because these technologies are relatively recent. The purpose of this descriptive study was to examine U.S. women's experiences with and attitudes toward cyber harassment by way of an anonymous electronic survey. A total of 293 adult women (mean …

Quantitative Reasoning In Environmental Science: Rasch Measurement To Support Qr Assessment, Robert L. Mayes Dr., Kent Allan Rittschof, Jennifer H. Forrester, Jennifer D. Schuttlefield Christus, Lisa C. Watson, Franziska Peterson

Curriculum, Foundations & Reading: Faculty Publications

Original work is hosted at USF Libraries Scholar Commons publisher of Numeracy, the electronic journal of the National Numeracy Network (NNN).

Abstract : The ability of middle and high school students to reason quantitatively within the context of environmental science was investigated. A quantitative reasoning (QR) learning progression, with associated QR assessments in the content areas of biodiversity, water, and carbon, was developed based on three QR progress variables: quantification act, quantitative interpretation, and quantitative modeling. Diagnostic instruments were developed specifically for the progress variable quantitative interpretation (QI), each consisting of 96 Likert-scale items. Each content version of …

What Is The Impact Of Stress-Coping Skills On Levels Of Motivation In Adolescents?, Tanya M. Hudson, Noran L. Moffett, Karen Mccabe Jun 2015

What Is The Impact Of Stress-Coping Skills On Levels Of Motivation In Adolescents?, Tanya M. Hudson, Noran L. Moffett, Karen Mccabe

Georgia Educational Researcher

Stress-coping strategies are identified by researchers as conditions used suitable to a situation when adolescents have a change in their environment or a stressor that they cannot control. The purpose of this manuscript is to explore the impact of stress-coping strategies on perceived levels of intrinsic motivation. According to the research, stress results from an imbalance between the requirements of the environment and one’s ability to cope with it (Aldwin, 2007). The inquiry was conducted in a high school of convenience where the researcher had access to the students available to participate in quantitative research design. Research has shown that …

Exploration Of Classroom Seating Arrangement And Student Behavior In A Second Grade Classroom, Kate Simmons, Laura Carpenter, Schronna Crenshaw, Vanessa M. Hinton Jun 2015

Exploration Of Classroom Seating Arrangement And Student Behavior In A Second Grade Classroom, Kate Simmons, Laura Carpenter, Schronna Crenshaw, Vanessa M. Hinton

Georgia Educational Researcher

The purpose of this study was to determine if a specific classroom seating arrangement can contribute to students being on or off-task while completing independent work within the general education setting of an inclusive second grade class. In this study, three classroom seating arrangements were compared in a second grade classroom. These seating arrangements were cluster seating, horseshoe seating, and row seating. There were specific targeted off-task behaviors that were to be observed: inappropriate talking, students out of their seats without permission, students not following directions, and students not starting independent work promptly. Data were collected using three methods: observation/ …

The Continuing Professional Development Of School Psychologists In Georgia: A Comparison To National Practices And Preferences, P. Dawn Tysinger, Jeffrey A. Tysinger, Terry D. Diamanduros, Rebecca Smith Jun 2015

The Continuing Professional Development Of School Psychologists In Georgia: A Comparison To National Practices And Preferences, P. Dawn Tysinger, Jeffrey A. Tysinger, Terry D. Diamanduros, Rebecca Smith

Georgia Educational Researcher

The current study investigated Georgia school psychologists’ continuing professional development (CPD) practices and preferences for comparison to a national study of school psychology professional development by Armistead, Castillo, Curtis, Chappel, and Cunningham (2013). Utilizing the same instrument as Armistead et al., a survey was emailed to 442 members of the Georgia Association of School Psychologists (GASP). Ninety-five surveys were completed at a 21.5% response rate. Both Georgia school psychologists and national school psychologists reported receiving a median of approximately 40 hours of professional development in the previous year. Georgia school psychologists differed from the national sample with a higher percentage …

Perceptions Of Preservice Teachers’ E-Portfolios For Hiring Decisions, Molly Zhou, Marilyn M. Helms Jun 2015

Perceptions Of Preservice Teachers’ E-Portfolios For Hiring Decisions, Molly Zhou, Marilyn M. Helms

Georgia Educational Researcher

Preservice teachers often build E-portfolios of their work prior to graduation, but their use beyond the college classroom is not clear. To identify if E-portfolios are used during the teacher hiring process, 170 administrators from 84 (K-12) schools in eight North Georgia districts were surveyed regarding their use of E-portfolio materials. Based on the mixed methods used, E-portfolios were not strongly favored for use in decision-making. To increase their usefulness, preservice teachers should actively provide access to artifacts valued by potential employers including certification documents, classroom management plans, evidence of work with Individualized Educational Plan (IEP) students, ability to work …
