Hard Edge Expansion, Quinderrious Humphrey Jan 2025

Hard Edge Expansion, Quinderrious Humphrey

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

Hard-edge painting has always been rooted in precision, crisp forms, and the rejection of gestural abstraction. My work builds on this tradition while pushing its boundaries, breaking free from the conventional picture plane, exploring objecthood, and activating space through material and color. By using shaped wood substrates instead of canvas, I transform paintings into physical objects that interact with their environment rather than existing as flat images. The natural grain of the wood plays an integral role in this, creating an organic contrast to the controlled, geometric forms I apply.

Color functions as both a formal and perceptual tool in …

An Infrared Thermography Assessment For Monitoring Aging Mse Walls, Charles Lawal Jan 2025

An Infrared Thermography Assessment For Monitoring Aging Mse Walls, Charles Lawal

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

Mechanically Stabilized Earth (MSE) walls play a vital role in ensuring the stability of transportation infrastructure, yet traditional inspection techniques often struggle to detect subsurface defects and demand significant labor. This research explores the application of Infrared Thermography (IRT) as a non-destructive, cost-effective approach for inspecting MSE walls across Southeast Georgia. By capturing thermal images under diverse environmental and operational conditions, the study aims to identify potential issues, including cracks, voids, delamination, and honeycombing, which can undermine integrity over time. Utilizing advanced image processing tools, the research implements specialized software to enhance the accuracy of defect detection, facilitating the generation …

Metalepsis And Mental Castration: Doki Doki Literature Club As The Cerebral Monstrous-Feminine, Hannah Graham Jan 2025

Metalepsis And Mental Castration: Doki Doki Literature Club As The Cerebral Monstrous-Feminine, Hannah Graham

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

Doki Doki Literature Club! is a horror visual novel masquerading as a dating simulation game. Behind the thin veneer of pretty girls in tiny skirts and tight uniforms lurk horrors, glitches, and metaleptic events that take the player’s battle for agency beyond mere point-and-click interactions. This fight breaches containment to the level of the physical, as the player must literally wrestle for control with an in-game character who has commandeered their entire computer system. Players are led to believe that they are making the decisions that further the plot, but come to learn that in this world, there is no …

A Monstrous [Un]-Becoming: Defining The Final Boy, Rhys Crumpton Jan 2025

A Monstrous [Un]-Becoming: Defining The Final Boy, Rhys Crumpton

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

Through an exploration of horror theory, monster theory, queer theory, and disabilities studies, this thesis defines a 21st century archetype within the serial horror narrative, known as “the Final Boy.” This character is a manifestation of a queer, often neurodivergent man in peril at the hands of a monstrous society. This harmful socionormativity is narratively represented by a monster wearing the face of a man, one whom the Final Boy must subdue and overcome if he wishes to survive. The seven tenets found in this project highlight the fluctuating morality the Final Boy is forced to engage in per the …

The Rescue Of Wahutedew’Á And The Epistemological Reforestation: An Analysis Of Time In A Terra Dos Mil Povos, By Kaká Werá Jecupé, Ivo Cruz Jan 2025

The Rescue Of Wahutedew’Á And The Epistemological Reforestation: An Analysis Of Time In A Terra Dos Mil Povos, By Kaká Werá Jecupé, Ivo Cruz

The Coastal Review

It is estimated that in 1500, the year the Portuguese arrived in America, there was a population of 2,431,000 inhabitants, according to historian John Hemming (1978), who occupied the lands that we now know as Brazil. These peoples had their own culture whose cosmology was destroyed and erased over time by a violent process of colonization. Even though entire groups were decimated, much of their influence is still alive in Brazilian culture. This influence can be found in vocabulary, cuisine, and even religious practices. With the aim of rescuing ancestral narratives and knowledge of various native peoples, Kaká Werá Jecupé …

Examining Our Practice: Engaging In A Faculty Learning Community To Enhance An Online Graduate Program, Regina Rahimi, Lina Soares, Hui Jin

Middle Grades & Secondary Education: Faculty Publications

This research report details a faculty learning community (FLC) developed by three faculty teaching in a graduate program in a mid-size southern university. The purpose of the research was to engage in the study of best practices for online graduate courses by engaging in collaborative discussions on common texts related to improving the teaching and learning experience. Specifically, the faculty engaged in common readings on “small teaching practices” and reflected on the knowledge gleaned and how it related to current online teaching practices (Darby & Lang, 2019; Lang, 2016). The study further explored how an FLC helped higher education instructors …

A Tale Of Two Educators: An Observational Case Study, Victoria Vanuitert, Lauren Zepp, Jennifer Malone, Stacy Mcguire, Alexandra Newson, Gwendolyn K. Deger, Shannon Core

Journal of Case Learning & Exceptional Learners

Increasing numbers of disabled and neurodivergent students are enrolling in postsecondary institutions, including teacher preparation programs. Although teacher educators strive to prepare their students to use strategies and provide support effectively in their future classrooms, many of these educators need tools to offer comparable services to disabled and neurodivergent preservice teachers. Specifically, disabled and neurodivergent preservice teachers have reported barriers to disclosing their disabilities and receiving access to needed accommodations. Instead, they report feeling scrutinized as to whether they are capable of being teachers due to their disability. These experiences seem to be especially pronounced during their teaching placement, and …

It’S A Slippery Slope: A Journey Of Questioning Religion And Building Homeplace, Emily Richardson-Dion Jan 2025

It’S A Slippery Slope: A Journey Of Questioning Religion And Building Homeplace, Emily Richardson-Dion

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

Homeplace (Whitlock, 2007) describes the place where we live most comfortably. It is not confined to a physical place, but is constructed by the culture, customs, beliefs, and messages, implicit and explicit, that we absorb over the course of our lives. In this study, I utilize the method of currere, a method of self-study established and then reimagined by Pinar (2023), and Critical Race Feminist Currere introduced by Baszile (2015) to examine my educational experiences and more fully understand what has contributed to my personal construction of homeplace. My experience, like that of Baszile (2015), reflects the need to examine …

Assessing The Impact Of Environmental Health Risk Communication On Cancer Screening Intentions Among Private Well Owners In Rural Communities, Victoria A. Clower Jan 2025

Assessing The Impact Of Environmental Health Risk Communication On Cancer Screening Intentions Among Private Well Owners In Rural Communities, Victoria A. Clower

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

Background: Cancer is a leading cause of death in Georgia, with rising incidence in rural counties where many residents rely on unregulated private wells. These wells may contain contaminants such as radon, lead, nitrate, and arsenic, all linked to increased cancer risk. Limited research has explored how environmental exposure awareness influences cancer prevention behaviors such as screening. Guided by the Champion Health Belief Model, this study examined psychosocial and environmental predictors of screening intent among private well owners. Methods: Well Aware was an 11-week quasi-experimental study among 60 private well owners in southeast Georgia. Participants who attended educational listening sessions …

Unbound, Candice Avery Jan 2025

Unbound, Candice Avery

National Youth Advocacy & Resilience Journal

“UNBOUND" is a poetic declaration of rebellion against the societal mold that has long defined girlhood by its politeness, passivity, and prettiness. Drawing from personal reflection and maternal conviction, the poem offers a raw and resonant portrait of a mother raising a daughter to be bold, unfiltered, and unapologetic. Where previous generations were taught to shrink, this daughter is being taught to expand. The piece challenges inherited norms and celebrates a fiery voice that refuses to be quieted. Often performed as the opening to my #GirlDrama mentorship presentation, this poem disrupts comfort in favor of truth. It is both a …

Journal of Case Learning & Exceptional Learners

This case study examines the impact of specialized coaching support for preservice special education teachers with autism during their senior year of their teacher preparation program with specific focus on practicum and student teaching placements. The study involved two undergraduate students, ages 21 and 20, diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder, who were in their final year of a special education licensure program at a university in a rural area in the Midsouth region of the United States. Both participants had disclosed their disability status and requested accommodations through university services. The coaching process evolved through four distinct phases over two …

Beyond The Glass Ceiling: Career Advancement Strategies For Mid-Level Women In Student Affairs, Jalonda N. Thompson

Journal of Higher Education & Student Affairs

The purpose of this paper is to provide an overview of the literature on the push and pull factors that influence women’s choices to either opt in or opt out of career advancement in student affairs (Coetzee & Moosa, 2020; Harman & Sealy, 2017). Women, specifically Black women, are underrepresented in Senior Student Affairs Officer (SSAO) positions in higher education (American Council of Education, 2024). As the demographics of the United States (US) change, student affairs is at a critical point to foster an inclusive learning environment that reflects the increasing racial and ethnic diversity in the US (Lopez, 2006). …

Substance Misuse And Suicidal Behaviors In An Lgbtqia+ Sample: Examining The Buffering Effects Of Psychological Flexibility And Emotional Regulation, Mariano Ottone

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

Suicidal behaviors among LGBTQIA+ individuals, particularly in the context of substance misuse, present a significant area of exploration for mental health research and intervention. It is particularly important to evaluate factors capable of moderating this relationship, to promote more culturally affirming prevention models. This study aimed to explore the moderating roles of emotion regulation (ER) and psychological flexibility in the relationship between substance misuse and suicidal behaviors within the LGBTQIA+ community. Data were collected from 537 LGBTQIA+ adults through an online survey platform. Participants were asked to self-report on measures assessing the constructs of interest. The analysis focused on understanding …

How Does Psychopathology Impact The Trajectory From State To Trait Mindfulness?, Veronica O'Brien Jan 2025

How Does Psychopathology Impact The Trajectory From State To Trait Mindfulness?, Veronica O'Brien

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

Previous research has found that higher levels of trait mindfulness protect against psychopathology (e.g., Chiesa & Serretti, 2013; Desrosiers et al., 2013; Sevilla-Llewellyn-Jones et al., 2018); however, the research on state mindfulness and psychopathology is more mixed. These mixed findings suggest that some clients with higher levels of psychopathology may have greater difficulty engaging with mindfulness practice thereby hampering their progression towards trait mindfulness and its associated benefits. The present study sought to explore how psychopathology (i.e., anxiety, trauma, alcohol use, and depression) relates to the growth of state and trait mindfulness. The present study recruited 274 participants from a …

Perceived Credibility Of Allegations Of Sexual Assault Across Victim Race And Mental Health History, Liyah C. Morgan Jan 2025

Perceived Credibility Of Allegations Of Sexual Assault Across Victim Race And Mental Health History, Liyah C. Morgan

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

Previous research examined the effect of victim gender and rape myth acceptance (RMA) on perceptions of victim credibility; however, little attention has been given to the impact of victim race and mental health history, and even fewer studies have explored the intersection of these two identities. The primary purpose of the current study was to identify factors affecting understanding of perceived credibility of victims of sexual assault, specifically in terms of victim race and mental health history. The study also examined the role of RMA on perceptions of credibility and explored participant attitudes related to color-blind racial attitudes and mental …
