Predicting Faculty Intentions To Assign Writing In Their Classes, David Trafimow, Lindsay M. Ruckel, Shelly Stovall, Yogesh J. Raut New Mexico State University
Predicting Faculty Intentions To Assign Writing In Their Classes, David Trafimow, Lindsay M. Ruckel, Shelly Stovall, Yogesh J. Raut New Mexico State University
International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning
Teachers who offer undergraduate courses agree widely on the importance of writing assignments to further undergraduate education. And yet, there is a great deal of variance among teachers in their writing assignments; some teachers assign no writing whatsoever. To determine the variables that influence the decisions of teachers about whether to assign writing, we predicted their intentions to assign writing from attitudes, subjective norms, perceived control, and perceived difficulty pertaining to assigning writing. Zero-order correlations and hierarchical regression analyses implicate attitude and perceived difficulty as the most important predictors of teacher’s intentions to assign writing in two studies. We also …
Affect Matters: When Writing Feedback Leads To Negative Feeling, Amy Rupiper Taggart 2317148, Mary Laughlin
Affect Matters: When Writing Feedback Leads To Negative Feeling, Amy Rupiper Taggart 2317148, Mary Laughlin
International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning
A continuous challenge in the writing classroom is maintaining openness and positivity around feedback. There are myriad factors that influence the felt experience of the feedback process, and the researchers wanted to understand better how students experience and perceive negative moments, as well as what factors remain salient in their minds after the fact. Therefore, we surveyed students nationwide who had taken a writing intensive course to learn about the moments when they were not able to take teacher feedback and use it to revise, as well as the times when they used feedback against their own judgment. Drawing on …
Using A Teaching Philosophy Statement As A Professional Development Tool For Teacher Candidates, Nancy G. Caukin, Thomas M. Brinthaupt
Using A Teaching Philosophy Statement As A Professional Development Tool For Teacher Candidates, Nancy G. Caukin, Thomas M. Brinthaupt
International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning
Most new teachers are expected to develop a teaching philosophy statement (TPS). In the present paper, we describe some of the major functions of a TPS and how it can be beneficial to the professional development of teacher candidates. We then describe a case example of a Residency I program and how the features of that program help teacher candidates write an effective TPS. Seventy-three senior-level teacher candidates at a large public, comprehensive southeastern U.S. university participated in the study. At the end of their Residency I semester, they completed a survey in which they rated the importance and influence …

Consuming Digital Technologies And Enacting Identities: Mothers In Mundane Daily Life, Meera Venkatraman
Consuming Digital Technologies And Enacting Identities: Mothers In Mundane Daily Life, Meera Venkatraman
AMTP Proceedings 2017
This manuscript examines mothers’ consumption of digital technologies to enact their individual, relational, and familial identities. Using phemenological interviews it finds mothers purposefully consume digital technologies to negotiate, construct, and enact identities. Specifically, mothers use a repertoire of four appropriation strategies: mastering, partnering, domesticating, and avoiding. Mastery is a multi-year project in which mothers enroll in digital educational programs, qualify, and create new professional identities. In domestication, mothers assert themselves on technology managing their inclusion/exclusion in the time and spaces of family life, thereby enacting parental identities. In contrast, partnering is collaborative; mothers consume those functionalities of technologies that help …

An Exploratory Investigation Of Green Behaviors And Attitudes Towards Green Marketing Initiatives, Sam Fullerton, Tammy Mccullough, Lewis Hershey
AMTP Proceedings 2017
A sample of 205 university students provided input regarding an array of 32 issues germane to both green marketing and green consumption. A diverse array of behaviors and opinions were articulated. Respondents reported a high propensity to engage in recycling, donating used goods, and purchasing products with a longer life expectancy. They favored environmentally-friendly actions such as focusing on cleaner and more efficient energy alternatives. There was a strong belief that individuals can make a difference. A comparison of business and nonbusiness students documented significant differences on two of the 32 issues under investigation with nonbusiness students expressing greater concern …
Employee Retention In A Call Center, Angelica Pigman, Perry Haan
Employee Retention In A Call Center, Angelica Pigman, Perry Haan
AMTP Proceedings 2017
One of the most important aspects of many businesses providing customer services are their call centers. These organizations employ millions of workers who are required to address customer queries and provide solutions to both existing and prospective clients. Customer service is looked at as key factor to keeping current customers. Worldwide, call centers comprise an ever-evolving and dynamic industry, yet researchers find that there is a high turnover rate among call center agents (Pierre & Tremblay, 2011). Facing customers and answering complicated queries are daunting tasks, this is made even more complicated by the fact that call center technology is …

AMTP Proceedings 2017
The authors examine the use of online panels, the assumptions that are being made, and the dangers of those assumptions for small business. Specifically, the authors investigate the existence and possible effects of speeders. They conclude with a discussion of the implications and how to avoid falling into the traps that this problem may create.
Selling Fear Across Ethnic Consumers: Modeling Emotional Arousal And Validating The Impact Of Galvanic Skin Responses In Advertising, Sindy Chapa, Olivia Bravo
Selling Fear Across Ethnic Consumers: Modeling Emotional Arousal And Validating The Impact Of Galvanic Skin Responses In Advertising, Sindy Chapa, Olivia Bravo
AMTP Proceedings 2017
The purpose of this study is to explore how fear-appeal advertising impacts young adults in a multi-ethnic society. This study combines self-reported measures and a skin-galvanic psychological test to measure the impact that fear-appeal advertising has among ethnic groups. Using a one-ad experimental design, results shows significant differences among ethnic groups indicating that the levels of arousal evoked by a “fear-appeal” advertisement were highest across Asian Americans followed by Hispanic American, African-Americans, and then Non-Hispanic Whites. Overall, a proposed model reveals emotions outweigh attitudes toward the ad on the manipulation of fear-appeal advertising.

The Role Of Social Identity In Viewer Attitudes And Intentions, Rachel Kavena Secharan, Hillary Greenberg, Juancarlo Villatoro, Princess Brown, Jaejin Lee
AMTP Proceedings 2017
The research project aims to identify a relationship between self-identification based on the social identity theory and feelings towards a particular show. Focusing the research on four fictitious shows with similar plot lines, but different casts of the same ethnic group, the research team has created a questionnaire that asked questions relating to the shows and participant social identity. The survey sample consists of 241 individuals between the ages of 18 and 28. The results show that there is a positive predictive relationship between feeling that your social group is represented in a show and attitudes towards that show, as …
For One Or Many? Recommendation Targeting And Consumer Advice Integration, Michael Sciandra
For One Or Many? Recommendation Targeting And Consumer Advice Integration, Michael Sciandra
AMTP Proceedings 2017
As consumers, many of our most important decisions are not made in isolation. Rather, it is common for individuals to pursue, evaluate, and rely on advice from other individuals. While research on advice usage from multiple or individual advisors has been investigated, no research has looked at advice integration when the advice is offered to an individual or group. This is an important consideration of advice as online review sites (e.g. Yelp, Expedia, and Foursquare) and social media platforms (e.g. Twitter and Facebook) now make it easy for consumers to make general recommendations targeted at a large number of individuals. …

Assessment Of Oral Presentations In An Undergraduate Accounting Program: An Application Of Videotapes, Role Plays And Student Involvement, Leslie B. Fletcher, Linda G. Mullen, Gloria J. Stuart
AMTP Proceedings 2017
The subject School of Accountancy assesses oral presentations at the undergraduate (Bachelor of Business Administration in Accounting) level to accomplish program improvement and accreditation maintenance. Historically, accounting students were assessed on their oral presentation skills by giving a 3-4 minute presentation of a completed research paper and used presentation software. Accounting faculty members assessed the presentation using a six-factor four-level rubric.
This work was motivated by feedback received from the School’s Accounting Advisory Board; the members were dissatisfied with new accounting staff hires’ inability to communicate with their clients face-to-face. While they appreciated the favorable results achieved in the oral …
Supermarket Pricing Model Impact On Private Label Brands Versus National Brands Among Millennial Consumers, Jeffrey Hendrix, Vinny Caraballo
Supermarket Pricing Model Impact On Private Label Brands Versus National Brands Among Millennial Consumers, Jeffrey Hendrix, Vinny Caraballo
AMTP Proceedings 2017
National Brands (NBs) and private label brands (PLBs) play a vital role in manufacturing and retailing strategies. Market share growth of PLBs over the past few decades continues to level the playing field; altering go-to-market strategies for both NB and PLB manufacturers and retailers. A quantitative examination compared purchase data between NB versus PLB using panel data from 100,000 households. Consumer metrics; trip conversion, buyer conversion, and dollar loyalty served as dependent variables interacting with a multivariate grouping of branding (NB vs. PLB), grocery pricing model (Hi-Lo vs. EDLP vs. Hybrid) and age-cohort (Millennial vs. Generation X). A MANOVA provided …
Too Nice To Be Dominant: How Brand Warmth Impacts Perceptions Of Market Dominance, Jennifer L. Stoner, Carlos J. Torelli
Too Nice To Be Dominant: How Brand Warmth Impacts Perceptions Of Market Dominance, Jennifer L. Stoner, Carlos J. Torelli
AMTP Proceedings 2017
Consumers are unaware of brands’ market dominance. This is important given that even misperception as a market leader has been shown to lead to positive evaluations from consumers. We hypothesize that when consumers are lacking direct knowledge about a brand’s market dominance, brand image is used as a cue for inference making: specifically, a brand with a warm, kind, and generous image will be in conflict with perceptions of market dominance, which are perceived as an embodiment of power. Thus high warmth brands will be perceived as less market dominant than low warmth brands.
In study 1, we use real …
Goal Orientation, Motivational Climate, And Exercise As Predictors Of Eating Disorder Risk Factors Among College Students, Carly Wahl
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
College is a transition period in a young adult’s life in which eating disorder symptomology is especially prevalent. Additionally, motivation-based factors such as goal orientation and motivational climate can influence these eating disorder-like behaviors, especially in a physical activity setting. The present study aimed to examine how goal orientation, motivational climate, and exercise could be used to predict a college students’ eating disorder symptomology. Participants included 276 college-aged males and females from a university in the southeastern United States. These participants had experience using the university recreation activity center and were recruited from a required healthful living course. Each participant …
Persistence And Achievement In Academics, Robert L. Altman
Persistence And Achievement In Academics, Robert L. Altman
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
One of the most valuable commodities in modern society is a college education. According to the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES, 2016), an estimated 20.5 million students enrolled in American colleges and universities during the fall of 2016, with the majority enrolled in undergraduate programs. When assessing undergraduate success, many studies focus on academic achievement, with grade-point average (GPA) serving as the most common measure. Other studies utilize persistence to graduation as the primary measure of success. Based on the available literature, college success can be predicted by several domains, including personality, motivational influences, and social variables. In the …
Accounting For Taste In Irish Traditional Music, Eryn T. Wagnon
Accounting For Taste In Irish Traditional Music, Eryn T. Wagnon
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
Although it is self-evident that people care about music, we don’t know how they make sense of their taste in it. In this study, I will explore how individuals explain their taste in music. I will specifically be focusing on the genre of Irish traditional music (ITM). One way to explore how people account for their taste in this genre is through a qualitative content analysis of online comments. I hope to demonstrate the vocabulary of motives for music preference, by focusing on how individuals account for their taste in Irish traditional music online. Also, this study will help show …

Psychopathy And The Effect Of Imitation On Empathetic Pain, Emily N. Lasko
Psychopathy And The Effect Of Imitation On Empathetic Pain, Emily N. Lasko
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
Psychopathy is a disorder largely characterized by a marked deficit in empathy, however, the specificity and extent of the deficit is currently unclear. While it has been well-established in the literature that individuals higher in psychopathy tend to have intact Theory of Mind abilities and exhibit a deficient ability for affective empathy (Blair, 2005), the contribution of motor empathy to these abilities, particularly in regard to empathy for pain, has yet to be experimentally examined. Additionally, the possibility of imitation increasing motor empathic abilities has not been tested in this capacity. The goal of the current study was to further …
"Goo-Prone And Generally Pathetic": Empathy And Irony In David Foster Wallace's Infinite Jest, Benjamin L. Peyton
"Goo-Prone And Generally Pathetic": Empathy And Irony In David Foster Wallace's Infinite Jest, Benjamin L. Peyton
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
Critical considerations of David Foster Wallace’s work have tended, on the whole, to use the framework that the author himself established in his essay “E Unibus Pluram” and in his interview with Larry McCaffery. Following his own lead, the critical consensus is that Wallace succeeds in overcoming the limits of postmodern irony. If we examine the formal trappings of his writing, however, we find that the critical assertion that Wallace manages to transcend the paralytic irony of his postmodern predecessors is made in the face of his frequent employment of postmodern techniques and devices. Thus, there arises a contradiction between …
Femme Fatales And The Shifting Gender Norms Of The 19th Century, Esther M. Stuart
Femme Fatales And The Shifting Gender Norms Of The 19th Century, Esther M. Stuart
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
This project seeks to explore female monstrosity, specifically the femme fatale, in Gothic literature and its reflection of the shifting gender norms of the nineteenth century. The late 1790s experienced a distinct narrowing of female gender roles. While authors like Mary Wollstonecraft and Mary Hays publish during the eighteenth century, a backlash against such feminist voices took hold as a resurgence of spheres ideology and more traditional gender norms came into vogue. This particular shift in attitudes towards female gender norms is reflected in Scottish poet Anne Bannerman’s work as well as English novelist Charlotte Dacre’s Zofloya. Both authors’s works …
Romantic Interest Selection From An Imago Relationship Therapy Perspective, Lauren O. Patterson
Romantic Interest Selection From An Imago Relationship Therapy Perspective, Lauren O. Patterson
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
Imago Relationship Therapy (IRT) is a model of couples therapy that is not empirically validated (Jakubowski et al., 2004). IRT proposes that individuals select Romantic Interests (Interests) that are similar to their Childhood Caregivers (Caregivers) in an effort to heal childhood wounding (Hendrix, 1988). The current study sought to evaluate the IRT proposition of romantic interest selection by evaluating patterns in romantic interest selection, particularly the relationship between Caregiver and Interest personality characteristics, adult attachment dimensions, gender, and geographical location of origin. In addition, the study considers similarities in participant narratives of positive and negative experiences with Caregivers and Interests. …
An Exploration Of The Underlying Mechanisms Causing Spasticity In Young People With Cerebral Palsy, Alexis Carnes
An Exploration Of The Underlying Mechanisms Causing Spasticity In Young People With Cerebral Palsy, Alexis Carnes
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
Background and Objective(s): Spasticity is a common symptom experienced by individuals with cerebral palsy (CP). Spastic CP is often accompanied by hypertonia. Currently, there is a limited understanding of the contributions of spasticity to hypertonia which can in turn hinder the development of new rehabilitative measure to improve these conditions. Additionally, clinical evaluation of spasticity is limited to observational techniques such as the Ashworth scale. The purpose of this study was to compare differences in passive joint torque in the upper extremity between individuals with severe, spastic CP (MACS III-V) and healthy, age-matched controls at different speeds during passive stretching. …
The Effect Of A Pettlep Imagery Intervention-Based Pre-Performance Routine On Golfer's Short-Game Performance, Logan Baughman
The Effect Of A Pettlep Imagery Intervention-Based Pre-Performance Routine On Golfer's Short-Game Performance, Logan Baughman
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
Studies have suggested that imagery has a positive effect on performance in a variety of sports. The PETTLEP model (Holmes and Collins, 2001) includes the seven minimum elements sport psychologists incorporate into their imagery scripts. The PETTLEP model is the most comprehensive imagery model, thus providing the most functional equivalence. Golf is the interest of this study, with research stating that imagery has an overall positive impact on golf performance (Nicholls & Polman, 2005). However, studies involving the PETTLEP model have not been investigated thoroughly. There are several shots that have not been studied with the PETTLEP model, therefore this …
Role Ambiguity Of Head Volleyball Coaches And Strength And Conditioning Coaches In Division I Athletics, Meredith Paskert
Role Ambiguity Of Head Volleyball Coaches And Strength And Conditioning Coaches In Division I Athletics, Meredith Paskert
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
Role ambiguity is common in interdependent organizations and can negatively affect employee performance and organizational effectiveness. NCAA Division I athletic departments are examples of interdependent organizations containing the collaboration of many specialized staff members. Therefore, collegiate athletic departments could be susceptible to the existence of role ambiguity. The purpose of this study was to determine the prevalence of role ambiguity between head volleyball coaches and strength and conditioning coaches within a collegiate athletic department. Questionnaires were sent to head women’s volleyball coaches and their respective strength and conditioning coaches (who are in charge of creating and implementing strength and conditioning …
