Potential Biases And Social Stigmas Toward Mental Health On Georgia Southern’S Campus, Brandi N. Hawkins

Honors College Theses

Aims: The purpose of this study is to examine the potential biases and social stigmas toward mental health on Georgia Southern’s campus. The research questions explored are as follows: (1) Are there mental health biases on campus? (2) Are there any differences between college, class status, marital status, race, age, or gender in terms of mental health bias? (3) Do students feel as though there are available resources on campus? (4) Do students feel comfortable reaching out for help?

Methods: Data was collected from 350 undergraduate students over the age of 18 via a Likert-style questionnaire. The questionnaire …

Best Practices For The Changing Male Voice In Secondary Choir Classrooms, Emily Deyton

Honors College Theses

This research looks at the application strategies for addressing the changing male voice in secondary choir classrooms. The goal is to determine if the best practices described by scholarly literature on the changing male voice are being put into practice in secondary choir classrooms in Georgia and their perceived effectiveness. The research was conducted through a survey sent to all middle school choir directors in the state of Georgia with contact information listed through GMEA. Upon examination of the survey results, it is clear that choir directors are putting many of these strategies into effect in their classrooms and that …

Peers And Instructors As Sources Of Distraction From A Cognitive Load Perspective, Brandi N. Frisby, Benson Sexton, Marjorie Buckner, Anna-Carrie Beck, Renee Monique Kaufmann Jul 2018

Peers And Instructors As Sources Of Distraction From A Cognitive Load Perspective, Brandi N. Frisby, Benson Sexton, Marjorie Buckner, Anna-Carrie Beck, Renee Monique Kaufmann

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

Framed by literature regarding classroom interactions that affect students’ cognitive processing, this study provided an integrative approach to understanding distracting instructor and student communication. Participants qualitatively reported on either a distracting peer (n = 90) or instructor (n = 127). The responses were coded using anti-citizenship behaviors and instructor misbehaviors. One additional category emerged that extends the instructor misbehavior literature. Participants completed a new distraction scale and a cognitive load scale. Our results revealed differences in frequencies for each behavior, but all instructor and student behaviors were equally distracting and had similar negative influences on students’ cognitive load. …

Student Resistance To Collaborative Learning, Sheri Stover, Cindra Holland Jul 2018

Student Resistance To Collaborative Learning, Sheri Stover, Cindra Holland

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

The advancing complexity of today’s corporate environment requires that employees are able to collaborate in the workplace. This mixed methods research study follows a nursing faculty’s efforts to incorporate collaborative learning (CL) into an introductory nursing class. The mixed-methods research study found that while students’ final grades improved in the initial CL flipped classroom design (p < .0005), their levels of student resistance deepened which resulted in significantly lower levels of community of inquiry (p = .004), lower levels of satisfaction, and many negative open-ended comments (83%). Using Tolman and Kreming’s (2017) integrated model of student resistance (IMSR) as a guideline, the instructor was successful in redesigning the CL class to overcome students’ resistance as measured by …

Facilitating Undergraduate Learning Through Community-Engaged Problem-Based Learning, Ronica N. Rooks, Brooke Dorsey Holliman Jul 2018

Facilitating Undergraduate Learning Through Community-Engaged Problem-Based Learning, Ronica N. Rooks, Brooke Dorsey Holliman

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

We used problem-based or experiential learning in our undergraduate Health Policy course to examine food deserts via a health impact assessment (HIA) assignment. A HIA evaluates potential effects on population health before a policy/program is implemented, to improve health and reduce adverse outcomes. We investigated if the HIA assignment facilitated student learning using mixed-methods to descriptively analyze students’ pre-/post-test and peer group assessment surveys, guest lecture reflections, mid-semester evaluations, and HIA research paper reflections. Quantitatively, students’ pre-/post-test ratings of their learning decreased from positive to neutral Likert scale scores, but they rated their group work positively over time. Qualitatively, students …

How Novice Researchers See Themselves Grow, Prajukti Bhattacharyya, Catherine W.M. Chan, Meg Waraczynski Jul 2018

How Novice Researchers See Themselves Grow, Prajukti Bhattacharyya, Catherine W.M. Chan, Meg Waraczynski

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

Engaging in undergraduate research is identified as a High Impact Practice (HIP), an experience that improves student learning outcomes. In this paper, we report the differences in the relative rates of increase in skill and knowledge gains associated with early engagement in undergraduate research from students who have little to no prior research experience. We studied the relative rates of changes in novice researchers’ perceptions of the progressive development of different research-related skills and conceptual understandings of their own projects, as well as how their attitudes, such as confidence in their own abilities as researchers, develop with continuous participation in …

The Teaching-Research Nexus: Perceptions Of Exchange Students In The United States And United Kingdom, Barry J. Griffiths Jul 2018

The Teaching-Research Nexus: Perceptions Of Exchange Students In The United States And United Kingdom, Barry J. Griffiths

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

An extensive amount of study in recent years has focused on the relationship between teaching and research among academic staff, with many concluding that an environment of increased scrutiny and assessment has tilted the priority towards research. Few studies have looked at how students perceive the teaching-research nexus, and this paper offers a new perspective on the issue by considering the perceptions of exchange students from the United States and the United Kingdom.

Data was collected by conducting in-depth interviews with twelve multidisciplinary students representing eight universities in the two countries, and an analysis conducted according to established phenomenological principles. …

Exploring Differences In Decisions About Exams Among Instructors Of The Same Introductory Biology Course, Christian D. Wright, Austin L. Huang, Katelyn M. Cooper, Sara E. Brownell Jul 2018

Exploring Differences In Decisions About Exams Among Instructors Of The Same Introductory Biology Course, Christian D. Wright, Austin L. Huang, Katelyn M. Cooper, Sara E. Brownell

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

College instructors in the United States usually make their own decisions about how to design course exams. Even though summative course exams are well known to be important to student success, we know little about the decision making of instructors when designing course exams. To probe how instructors design exams for introductory biology, we conducted an exploratory interview study with seven instructors teaching the same introductory biology course at a large university. We found that despite designing exams for the same course, instructor exam decisions differed with regard to what content was assessed, the exam format, the cognitive difficulty of …

Teaching The Monty Hall Dilemma To Explore Decision-Making, Probability, And Regret In Behavioral Science Classrooms, Kevin L. Bennett Jul 2018

Teaching The Monty Hall Dilemma To Explore Decision-Making, Probability, And Regret In Behavioral Science Classrooms, Kevin L. Bennett

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

The Monty Hall Dilemma (MHD), made famous by the television game show Let’s Make a Deal, can be an effective teaching tool with wide ranging behavioral science applications. The format and history of the problem are presented as well as experimental data and variations on the original design. Strategic game playing choices are discussed from several perspectives including statistics, decision making, social and personality psychology, and cognitive functioning. Because the classroom exercise is engaging and counterintuitive, it challenges students to generate explanatory ideas that draw from multiple perspectives. It exemplifies the type of detective work and creative thinking that …

New Perspective On Tpack Framework In The Context Of Early Childhood Education: The “A” Stands For Affective, Elizabeth K. Park, Jace Hargis

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

The purpose of this exploratory single-case study is to investigate the affordances of iPad transpired within a technological pedagogical and content knowledge (TPACK) framework by four early childhood educators with varying Technological Knowledge (TK) at a low-income preschool. Pre/post and follow-up survey, group and follow-up interviews, classroom observations and document of iPad workshop data were analyzed using coding methods in two cycles. The exploration in how teachers discovered the iPad affordances indicated parallel progression in TK and change in their value system. The exploration in the progression of TK and change in their value system suggest a relationship between progression …

Millennial Voting Patterns In A Politically Polarized America, Nic Matthews Jun 2018

Millennial Voting Patterns In A Politically Polarized America, Nic Matthews

Honors College Theses

As the millennial population has grown into adulthood, this generation has been labeled as an entitled group which is politically inactive, with lower voter turnout than older generations. At the same time, existing literature shows that the federal government in America has become increasingly polarized over the past decades and less representative of the general population which still generally moderate. I argue that low voter turnouts for millennials are a direct result of this increased polarization as a more moderate young people feel like they are not represented by elite politicians, who generally fall into older generations and the highest …

An Examination Of Optimism Between Gender, Race, And School Classification Of Millennial Students – An Exploratory Study, Abigail C. Johnson Jun 2018

An Examination Of Optimism Between Gender, Race, And School Classification Of Millennial Students – An Exploratory Study, Abigail C. Johnson

Honors College Theses

Optimism is defined as an individual’s approach to the expectation that good things will happen in the future and bad things are a rarity. Along with the general definition of what optimism is, many researchers have found that optimism depends on culturally embedded values and beliefs (Singh & Shukla, 2014; Lee & Mason, 2013). In addition, the relationship between optimism and positive health outcomes and well-being is well established (Coll, J.E. & Draves, P. R., 2008; Bastianello, M. R., Pacico, J. C., & Hutz, C. S., 2014). Although this is the case, little research has been found examining the differences …

Who Can Take The Heat? Investigating The Relationships Between Psychopathy, Stress, And Behavioral Reactions To A Mock Interrogation Situation, Jonathon M. Hall May 2018

Who Can Take The Heat? Investigating The Relationships Between Psychopathy, Stress, And Behavioral Reactions To A Mock Interrogation Situation, Jonathon M. Hall

Honors College Theses

The primary purpose of this experiment was to test whether individuals higher in psychopathy would experience less stress during a mock interrogation situation compared to individuals lower in psychopathy. Psycholegal experiments using a mock interrogation paradigm have focused on the situational conditions that increase the likelihood of false confessions. To our knowledge these studies have not investigated factors that predict a guilty participant’s refusal to confess. We chose to investigate whether psychopathy would predict refusal to confess when guilty of a mock crime. Psychopathy is a personality disorder often characterized by callous affect, interpersonal manipulation, and impulsiveness. In addition, individuals …
