Student Affairs Professional Preparation: A Scholar-Practitioner Guide To Contemporary Topics, Nikheal Patel
Student Affairs Professional Preparation: A Scholar-Practitioner Guide To Contemporary Topics, Nikheal Patel
Journal of Higher Education & Student Affairs
This review examines a recent edited volume that offers a timely and comprehensive exploration of the Higher Education/Student Affairs (HESA) field. The book distinguishes itself through its dual emphasis on foundational knowledge and contemporary challenges, while weaving together faculty and practitioner perspectives—a structural choice that reflects the collaborative ethos of the field itself. Organized into three parts, the book addresses traditional curriculum areas, institutional type considerations, and emerging topics shaping HESA practice today.
The review highlights how the authors thoughtfully engage Student Development Theory (SDT) as a framework not only for student growth, but also for the professional evolution of …
How Are You? Increasing Pre-Service Educators' Out-Of-Class Communication With Social And Emotional Learning, Brittany Severino
How Are You? Increasing Pre-Service Educators' Out-Of-Class Communication With Social And Emotional Learning, Brittany Severino
International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning
Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) can be embedded within professors’ teaching pedagogy to help support students’ mental well-being and create an inclusive learning environment. However, studies that explore implementing specific SEL strategies within higher education are extremely limited. To explore the potential benefits, the researcher and professor of this study engaged in the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL), by evaluating the potential impact of a consistent SEL check-in at the start of each class session on the student-initiated out-of-class communication (OCC), attendance, and academic performance of undergraduate education majors pursuing a special education certification or minor. Quantitative and qualitative …
Student And Perceived Instructor Big Five Traits As Predictors Of Rapport And Course Grades, Anna E. Park, J. Arthur Gillaspy, Jr., William Lammers
Student And Perceived Instructor Big Five Traits As Predictors Of Rapport And Course Grades, Anna E. Park, J. Arthur Gillaspy, Jr., William Lammers
International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning
Studies show that student-instructor rapport is correlated with student success in college courses (e.g., Lammers & Gillaspy, 2013). Less is known about the personality traits of students and their perceptions of instructors’ personality traits that are associated with rapport. This study addressed this gap in the literature. In an online survey, students self-reported their big five personality traits. They then thought about a particular class from the previous semester. They rated the associated instructor’s big five and their rapport with the instructor. Their ratings of their instructor’s big five were more predictive of rapport than their own self-reported big five. …

Reflective Perspectives On Interdisciplinary Teaching In Public Health Education: Insights From A Mixed-Methods Approach, Raymond Boon Tar Lim, Claire Gek Ling Tan, Kelly Voo, Lee, Cecilia Woon Chien Teng
International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning
Interdisciplinary teaching is vital for equipping students to address complex public health challenges. This study explores teachers' reflections on interdisciplinary teaching in Singapore’s undergraduate public health programmes, examining facilitators and barriers to its implementation. Using surveys and in-depth interviews, we gathered diverse insights from teachers. Quantitative results revealed a significant positive association between interdisciplinary teaching frequency, and willingness for further integration, and non-significant associations for perceptions on knowledge and importance of integration. Notably, participants' satisfaction with the current state of interdisciplinary learning in the public health curriculum or during internship supervision was low, although this finding was not significant. Qualitative …
Avatars Vs. Actors: Comparison Shows Little Difference In Role-Play Simulations For Psychology Students, Melinda Russell-Stamp, Jean R. Norman, Kennedy Parker
Avatars Vs. Actors: Comparison Shows Little Difference In Role-Play Simulations For Psychology Students, Melinda Russell-Stamp, Jean R. Norman, Kennedy Parker
International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning
Role-playing using avatars has been demonstrated as effective, but it has not been compared to role-playing with a live actor. In this study, undergraduate psychology students (N=93) conducted a clinical interview in a role-play with an avatar or live actor. Mixed methods included a survey and written reflection. The study found no differences in student interest-enjoyment, skills-knowledge, comfort level, or utility value in survey scales found to be reliable. High levels of active learning were found in qualitative data in both conditions, though it was significantly higher in the avatar group. High levels of benefits from group work also were …

Lecturers’ Experiences Of Teaching A Module In An Interdisciplinary Study Programme, Jennifer Schijf, Greetje Van Der Werf, Ellen Jansen
International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning
Research universities are increasingly incorporating interdisciplinary education into their strategies. In this transition from monodisciplinary to interdisciplinary education, there is a need for insight into the optimal implementation of such activities. The current study investigates university lecturers’ interpretations of interdisciplinary education, their approaches towards developing interdisciplinary modules, and the challenges they face in teaching these. Based on interviews with nine lecturers, three interpretations of interdisciplinarity emerged. From the first interpretation, lecturers teach monodisciplinary knowledge and skills and expect the students to collect different perspectives. A second interpretation emphasizes participating students as being disciplinary experts that share their knowledge throughout the …

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning
Adaptive learning supports online instruction by offering feedback to students using machine learning. In a funded study, adaptive learning was used in a flipped STEM course at three universities for pre-class preparation. We conducted a comparative analysis with and without adaptive learning. The assessments were a final exam and concept inventory (stratified demographically) and affective questions from the College and University Classroom Environment Inventory, focus groups, and evaluation survey. This study found classroom environment enhancement with adaptive learning, with Task Orientation and Satisfaction exhibiting significant changes at two universities. We found enhanced perspectives with adaptive learning, including increased preference for …
Enhancing Students’ Academic Success Through Reflective Writing In An Undergraduate Flipped Course, Grace Onodipe, Darryl Romanow, Michelle M. Robbins
Enhancing Students’ Academic Success Through Reflective Writing In An Undergraduate Flipped Course, Grace Onodipe, Darryl Romanow, Michelle M. Robbins
International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning
Prior research has posited that flipped classrooms facilitate students’ self-directed learning and enhance grades. Although reflective writing is one method linked to academic success, it rarely has been examined empirically in the literature within the context of flipped classrooms. The current study investigated the association between growth mindset-inspired reflective writing, self-regulated learning assessments, and academic performance in a fully flipped Introduction to Economics course. Regression analyses found that reflective writing effort and targeted self-directed learning scores were associated with higher grades on course assessments. These findings suggest that reflective writing that incorporates growth-mindset messaging should be encouraged in flipped classrooms.

Belonging, Re-Belonging And Re-Becoming: A Science Teacher Educator’S Self-Study Of Using Pedagogical Tensions To Explore The Shaping Of One’S Pedagogical Approaches, Hlologelo Climant Khoza
International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning
The education landscape continues to change as perpetuated by crises like COVID-19 propelling teachers to adapt and change their pedagogical approaches. As a mid-career science teacher educator, having developed ways of teaching, I experienced pedagogical tensions that were unsettling during COVID-19, thus threatening what I already knew about teaching pre-service teachers. In this self-study, I used the construct of pedagogical equilibrium as a theoretical lens to understand how these pedagogical tensions shape my pedagogical approaches to teaching pre-service teachers in the present time. Data were collected through journaling and discussions with critical friends. These data sets were transformed into narratives …

Piloting The Appreciative Tuning Protocol: Improving Integration Through A Collaborative Professional Development Model, Teresa S. Foulger, Ashleigh King, Shyla Gonzalez-Dogan
International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning
This qualitative, self-reflection study was conducted by three instructors who had recently participated in a workshop on Principled Innovation, a character development framework designed in their college of education. They were confident about how they integrated PI into their courses but saw potential for further improvement. Drawing on collaborative professional development literature, they explored two models, Appreciative Inquiry and Tuning, that seemed to meet their needs. By merging elements of both, they created the Appreciative Tuning Protocol (ATP), a 30-minute, agenda-driven meeting where instructors identify a successful part of the integration effort (a bright spot), explore ways to enhance it, …

From Interactions To Brand Value Co-Creation: How Internal And External Stakeholders Drive Consumer-Generated Branding, Vaibhav Shwetangbhai Diwanji, Juliann Cortese
From Interactions To Brand Value Co-Creation: How Internal And External Stakeholders Drive Consumer-Generated Branding, Vaibhav Shwetangbhai Diwanji, Juliann Cortese
Journal of Applied Marketing Theory
Brand value co-creation (BVCC), a key concept in service-dominant logic (SDL) and identity-based brand management approach (IBBMA), plays a critical role in branding. However, the integrated roles of internal stakeholders (e.g., brand practitioners) and external stakeholders (e.g., consumers) in this process are not fully understood. Existing research has focused on either internal or external perspectives in isolation. This study addresses this gap by exploring the concept of consumer-generated branding (CGB) through the combined lens of both internal and external brand stakeholders. The findings show that as brand value becomes more experience-driven, meaningful interactions between consumers and marketers can lead to …

Why Do We Buy What They Recommend? Investigating The Effects Of Fashion Influencers’ Source Factors On Consumer Attitudes And Purchase Intentions, Faren Karimkhan, Sindy Chapa
Journal of Applied Marketing Theory
This study examined the effects of source factors (trustworthiness, expertise, attractiveness, similarity, and likability) among Social Media Fashion Influencers (SMFIs) on consumers’ attitudes toward SMFIs and attitudes toward endorsed products, as well as the influence of these attitude variables on consumers’ purchase intention. A one-shot single-group case study was conducted (n=440). PLS-SEM was used to analyze the data. Results indicated that trustworthiness, attractiveness, and likability influence attitudes toward SMFIs but not the product. Expertise, similarity, and likability influence attitudes toward the product but not attitudes toward SMFIs. Attitudes toward the product and similarity with SMFI significantly influence purchase intentions. Attitudes …

Determinants And Consequences Of Consumer Satisfaction Toward Hypermarkets In Thailand: Stimulus-Organism-Response Model, Kittichai Watchravesringkan, Chompunuch Punyapiroje
Journal of Applied Marketing Theory
In the early 2000s, Thailand's hypermarket sector experienced rapid growth, drawing significant foreign direct investment. However, increasing competition from local retailers, the rise of convenience stores and community malls, and evolving consumer shopping habits have contributed to a post-pandemic slowdown in sales growth. Understanding how consumers evaluate hypermarkets' marketing practices is crucial for both academics and managers, as their strategies may depend on the strength of consumer attitudes toward these practices. Guided by the stimulus-organism-response (S-O-R) paradigm, this study investigates how consumers’ attitudes toward marketing practices, including business provision, deceptive advertising, fair price, and retail services—affect consumer satisfaction, which, in …

Journal of Higher Education & Student Affairs
This research focused on the role that Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) play in the lives of today’s college students and how protective factors may increase a student’s level of resilience. This study examined participants’ levels of resilience, what ACEs they experienced prior to entering college, and what role protective factors played in mitigating the impacts of ACEs on resilience levels. Results indicated that older students scored higher in resilience than their younger counterparts. The findings indicated protective factors coupled with resilience play a role in the success of college students. Implications for practice suggest institutions of higher education should examine …

Buyer Perceptions Of Single- And Mixed-Gender Dyadic Sales Teams: Should I Have A Wingman Or A Wingwoman?, Eric Kushins, Melissa Clark
Journal of Applied Marketing Theory
Prior research suggests that the gender composition of sales teams may impact team performance. However, research at the intersection of sales, gender, and teams is limited. In this study, we collect survey data from hypothetical buyers who viewed one of six sales pitch videos, including solo salesmen and saleswomen, single-gender dyadic sales teams, and mixed-gender sales teams. The hypothetical buyers were asked to rate each of the salespeople on important traits that have proven to lead to successful sales interactions, including customer orientation, understanding, trustworthiness, awareness of others’ feelings, competence, knowledge, and if the hypothetical buyer would take advice from …

Unplanned In-Store Purchase Behavior Of Organic Grocery Product Users: Effect Of Consumer Innovativeness Traits And Traditional And Digital Promotional Stimuli, Dale A. Cake, Vikas Agrawal, Wooyang Kim
Journal of Applied Marketing Theory
The purpose of this study was to understand the relationship of consumer innovativeness traits and traditional or digital in-store promotional stimuli and their effect on in store unplanned shopping of organic products. Within a framework of trait theory, consumer buying behavior theory and decision-making processes, SEM and r software applied to U.S. retail organic user panel data showed a unique, positive relationship of hedonistic, price-consciousness and quality-seeking traits with domain-specific (organic products) consumer innovativeness. This had a direct, positive effect on traditional and digital stimuli use, as well as leading to unplanned shopping and spending of organic goods. Knowing the …

A Comparative Analysis Of Advertising Appeals In Anti- Smoking Advertisements (Print And Online Display Ads) From 1990s To 2020s In The U.K, Ayomide Adebare Mr, Jill Nash Dr
Journal of Applied Marketing Theory
This study provides a comparative analysis of advertising appeals in static anti-smoking advertisements in the U.K. from the 1990s to the 2020s, using quantitative content analysis. The research evaluates print and online display advertisements, focusing on the prevalence of rational (gain-framed and statistical) and emotional (fear and guilt) appeals. The study investigates shifts in appeal usage over time and the broader societal and regulatory influences driving these changes. Findings indicate a strategic shift in public health messaging, moving from fear-based appeals in the 1990s to increased reliance on gain-framed appeals by the 2020s. This study enhances academic understanding of how …
Breaking The Pipeline: Exploring Exclusionary Discipline, Restorative Justice, And The Attitudes And Beliefs Of Educators, Ericka J. Varnedoe
Breaking The Pipeline: Exploring Exclusionary Discipline, Restorative Justice, And The Attitudes And Beliefs Of Educators, Ericka J. Varnedoe
Honors College Theses
This study explores the connection between exclusionary disciplinary practices and the school-to-prison pipeline. It highlights how exclusionary discipline, including suspensions and expulsions, disproportionately affects marginalized groups such as students of color, students with disabilities, and LGBTQ youth, further contributing to the school-to-prison pipeline. In contrast, restorative justice, a non-punitive approach, offers a promising alternative. Initially adopted from the criminal justice system, restorative justice has been integrated into school environments to foster positive school climates, improve experiences, and mitigate challenging behaviors. This research examines educators' attitudes toward both exclusionary and restorative practices, as well as their awareness and implementation of restorative …

In our rapidly-advancing technological world, little is known about school safety planning in online school settings. We expanded the Crisis Event Perception Survey (CEPS) to the Sustainable, Accessible, Feasible, and Effective (SAFE) Crisis Event Perceptions Survey to assess verbal, physical, relational, and cyberbullying prevalence and administrator preparedness in online school settings. We found that almost half of school administrators assessed were untrained in responding to physical (48%) and relational (43%) bullying and approximately one-third of school administrators surveyed felt unprepared to address physical and/or relational bullying in online schools. Furthermore, we found that only about half of administrators are trained …

The Study Of Factors Influencing The Commercialization Of Startup Ideas, Ebadallah Yarmoradian, Zahra Saffari, Mahdi Maskani
AMTP Proceedings 2025
Commercialization of startups transforms innovative ideas into marketable products or services, addressing challenges like business model design, target market identification, investment attraction, and resource management. This study examines these challenges and highlights differences between product and service commercialization. Leveraging social and digital technologies, the research emphasizes improving communication networks, customer engagement, and process efficiency. It also explores modern technology's role in supporting nonprofit organizations and NGOs. Key findings underline the importance of technology-driven marketing, intelligent financial management, and robust communication networks. This paper offers practical recommendations for startups and nonprofits to tackle commercialization challenges effectively.
Cognitive Processing’S Role In Preventing Consumer Scams, Lana Waschka, Marcus Cunha Jr.
Cognitive Processing’S Role In Preventing Consumer Scams, Lana Waschka, Marcus Cunha Jr.
AMTP Proceedings 2025
Building on the findings of prior Unconscious Thought Theory (UTT) research, which showed how utilizing unconscious processing allowed participants to better identify lies (Reinhard, et al., 2011), the current work proposes a potential solution for consumers to identify and avoid complex scams and frauds: the use of distraction/ unconscious thought while processing information about scams. Through the course of three studies, we find evidence in support of the hypothesis and identify a moderated (relationship status) mediation (materialism) and that the main relationship is moderated by low self-esteem.
This work contributes to the literature by extending the application of unconscious thinking …

Demystifying Proactive Customer Helpers: Where Do We Find Them?, Estelle Van Tonder, Sam Fullerton
AMTP Proceedings 2025
Amid the growing interest in proactive customer helpers, extant research offers surprisingly little guidance on where to find them. Of interest to this study are proactive helpers taking personal initiative in assisting other customers to avoid harmful brands. Guided by the attitude-behavior phenomenon, selected attitudes and behaviors were examined among 347 customers in the United States using survey research. Latent profile analysis aided in obtaining further clarification regarding the profile characteristics of customers who proactively assist other customers with their brand avoidance behaviors in an anti-consumption context. These profile characteristics are useful, as they provide strategic direction on where to …

Integrating Consumer Behavior Theories: Understanding Modern Consumer Decision-Making, Khusbu Rahman
AMTP Proceedings 2025
This paper synthesizes recent consumer behavior research published in the Journal of Consumer Research between 2020-2024, addressing a significant gap in the consistent application of established theories across different contexts. The study examines key theoretical frameworks, including the Theory of Planned Behavior and the Stimulus-Organism-Response model, and their application in understanding modern consumer decision-making. Through a systematic literature review of 105 articles, the research highlights the complex interplay between rational and emotional factors in consumer behavior, the importance of psychological comfort and attachment in product relationships, and the role of framing and context in decision-making. The findings emphasize the need …
