A Foundational Investigation Of The Theory Of Brand Comfort, Kirk D. Aiken, Ajay Sukhdial, Matthew Meuter

AMTP Proceedings 2020

Two nationwide Internet studies investigated the novel concepts of comfort foods and comfort brands. After examining qualitative and quantitative measures, results showed that consumers were desirous of an important and expansive notion of brand comfort, defined here as: (1) the alleviation of physical and emotional stresses through brand consumption; combined with (2) the emergence of positive emotions of warmth, happiness, and love derived from brand associations often initiated by nostalgic memories of a romanticized past. Brand comfort stems from issues of physical comfort (i.e., how a certain brand fits, feels, smells, and tastes), combined with both cognitive components (driven …

Courageous Conversations In Counseling About Race, M. Ann Shillingford-Butler Ph.D., Kimberly Harris

National Cross-Cultural Counseling & Education Conference for Research, Action & Change (2016-2024)

The United States (U.S.) is known as the “melting pot” and is characterized by diversity (Matthews, Barden, & Sherrell, 2018). While the U.S. is culturally diverse, it is not culturally equal. Racial tensions have escalated recently, and psychologically harmful microaggressions are experienced by minorities across a multitude of settings, daily (Davis, DeBlaere, Brubaker, Owen, Jordan, Hook & Van Tongeren, 2015). Counselors must demonstrate cultural humility to be effective counselors in relationships where worldviews and values will inevitably clash (Davis et al., 2015, Hook, Watkins, Davis, Own, Van Tongren, & Ramos, 2016). Being culturally humble is a “lifelong commitment to self-evaluation …

Metacognition, Metalinguistic Awareness, And Relevance In Language Learning: A Report On An Intervention Module Project, Marianne Bessy, Stephanie M. Knouse

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

The purpose of this study is to examine the outcomes of a pedagogical intervention project in intermediate second language (L2) French and Spanish classes at the post-secondary level. The authors designed and implemented four “Language Learning Modules” (LLMs) to ascertain if these interventions could enhance students’ metacognitive and metalinguistic awareness and help students see the relevance of studying an L2. Sixty-two students were divided evenly into a “Module” group, which received the LLMs, and a “Non-Module” group, which did not receive such instruction. Analyses reveal that the Module group differed from the Non-Module group in terms of how they applied …

A Phenomenological Exploration Of Principals' Influence On Teacher Attrition, Kellie E. Gebhardt

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

ABSTRACT

Classroom teachers' decisions to leave the profession negatively affect the educational experience of the students, burden the remaining teachers, and drain school districts of funds that should go to students but instead are spent on recruiting and training. This phenomenological study examined the experiences of former classroom teachers to determine the role their school principals may have played in their decisions to leave the profession. Ten former elementary school teachers from South Carolina participated in the study. The researcher collected data using interviews; a semi-structured interview protocol was created from current literature and designed to align with the research …

A Story To Tell… How To Integrate The Three Modes Of Communication Through A Story Time Program In French, Frederique Grim

The Coastal Review

Bilingual story time programs found in local community libraries not only benefit children, they can also serve a need for L2 college students: the development of their communicative skills in an authentic environment. In addition to linguistic benefits, experiential learning has proven to prepare students for real-world skills, such as networking, mock professional experience and a sense of community engagement. This paper recounts how a world language story time program supports L2 learners’ three modes of communication, as articulated by ACTFL, and necessary for language development. Based on students’ perceptions, this study highlights their increase in motivation and confidence in …

AMTP Proceedings 2020

Between technological developments in the car industry and increasing interest in eco friendly products among consumers, eco-friendly cars are gradually entering consumers' sights. This study examines the factors that influence consumers’ attitudes toward the adoption of eco-friendly cars. The results demonstrate that consumers’ concern about environmental sustainability and attitude towards environmentally friendly products impact consumers’ attitudes toward eco-friendly cars. It was also found that consumer’s level of collectivism positively influence their attitude toward environmentally friendly products. Further, the results showed consumers’ attitudes …

Indicators Of Impactful Reflection In Pre-Service Teachers: A Case For Creativity, Honesty And Unfamiliar Experiences, Sarah Marie Catalana

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

This study investigated three commonalities among pre-service teachers who demonstrated advanced reflective practice regarding fieldwork experiences: (a) creative potential; (b) honesty in confronting misconceptions of the teaching profession, and (c) fieldwork in unfamiliar settings. Forty-two pre-service teachers submitted reflective papers which were qualitatively analyzed and scored for reflective ability using Harland and Wondras’s (2011) Framework of Four Levels of Reflection for Teacher Education. Low and High Reflectors were compared in terms of creative potential, as measured by the Torrance Tests of Creative Thinking-Figural. Results revealed Low Reflectors generally demonstrated lower creative potential than High Reflectors, with a significant difference (p < .05) in mean scores on the Abstractness of Titles subscale. High Reflectors also bluntly confronted previous misconceptions concerning education and described their field placements as unfamiliar when compared to their personal educational experiences. Implications for support of meaningful reflective practice in future educators are discussed in detail.

The objective of this study was to explore key components of the CBPR process that bolstered the early stages of a partnership established between rural-residing community leaders and academic partners in Georgia. Qualitative methodology was used to collect and assess data regarding the initial engagement between the community and academic partners. Findings indicate …

Methods: The FITNESSGRAM is the instrument that has been used to measure and report students’ physical activity and body mass index (BMI) based …

Aware I Am Alone: Intersections Of Solitude And Mindfulness, Richard Cleveland

Leadership, Technology & Human Development: Faculty Publications

This paper explores the relationship between solitude and mindfulness. Parallels between the two constructs exist, allowing them to complement each other in furthering the well-being of individuals and communities. Three perspectives through which mindfulness may assist in forming foundational understandings of solitude are presented; these comprise Theoretical, Practice, and Research. The Theoretical lens provides introductory understandings of both solitude and mindfulness. On this basis, integral parallels between the two constructs are outlined. Next, Practice reviews solitude that is fostered through mindfulness practices. Further, additional models for recognizing solitude as a part of mindfulness are proposed. Finally, Research …
