Planning For Middle Level Clinical Experiences During A Crisis, Kent Divoll, Kelly Moore

Current Issues in Middle Level Education

This article describes the trials and tribulations that a middle level education program faced during the global pandemic and recommendations that others can take away from these experiences. The provided suggestions for middle level teacher education programs are specifically for the current pandemic, but can be used for other disasters as well. We advocate that educator preparation programs develop a plan to deal with possible school closers or other disruptions to their field placements to prepare for the next disaster. Some of the recommendations include: (a) create an emergency plan, (b) cultivate relationships, (c) prepare your candidates in the best …

Simulating Collaboration In A Blended Course For Preservice Middle Grades Teachers: Attending To Team, Task, And Time, David C. Virtue

Current Issues in Middle Level Education

Collaboration and teamwork are essential aspects of the work of a professional middle level teacher and an integral part of AMLE Standard 5. Preservice teachers typically experience collaborative practices firsthand during field experiences, but the COVID-19 pandemic has caused many schools to shift instruction online thereby limiting the opportunities for teacher candidates to experience daily life in schools. Teacher educators can provide simulated opportunities for candidates to collaborate and engage in teamwork in virtual classroom settings. The author describes ways to simulate teacher collaboration in virtual settings by providing an example of engagements with teacher educators in a middle grades …

When “Karen” Is Your Coworker: Managing Peer Policing In The Academy, Rebecca George, Alexanderia T. Smith

National Cross-Cultural Counseling & Education Conference for Research, Action & Change (2016-2024)

In light of recent news where White women have called the police on Black people for participating in harmless everyday activities, terms like “Karen” have grown in popular use to describe these middle-class White women whose behavior is fueled by their privilege. Dr. Cheryl E. Matias (2020) notes in her book, on Surviving Becky(s), that White women are in somewhat of a unique position to be oppressed and to oppress, as evidenced by the intersectionality of their gender and race. The impact is felt by colleagues when “Karens” lack this awareness. The presenters will facilitate increased knowledge and awareness around …

Ethical use of these types of instruments will be discussed as well as practical uses when working with individuals developing their own ally identities

Advocating For Bipoc Counseling Trainees Through Fostering Belonging, Claudia Marshall Feb 2021

Advocating For Bipoc Counseling Trainees Through Fostering Belonging, Claudia Marshall

National Cross-Cultural Counseling & Education Conference for Research, Action & Change (2016-2024)

Counselor Education programs historically consist of majority White students and faculty, which can lead to the unintentional oppression of counselor trainees of color at a macro and micro level (Sue et al., 2009). This presentation highlights why it is vital for counselor education programs to advocate for their trainees by developing, establishing, or expanding programs geared towards fostering a sense of belonging to alleviate some of the barriers that counselor education trainees, specifically minoritized counselors trainees, may face.
