Mediated Field Experiences During Worldwide Pandemic: Adjusting Pedagogies To A Changing Climate, Holly H. Pinter Feb 2021

Mediated Field Experiences During Worldwide Pandemic: Adjusting Pedagogies To A Changing Climate, Holly H. Pinter

Current Issues in Middle Level Education

This paper explores the use of a mediated field experience (MFE) for teacher candidates in a middle school setting a small laboratory school. This work focuses on adjustments made for the MFE to function in an online environment during remote instruction caused by a worldwide pandemic. Teacher candidates completed a learning cycle focused on experiencing mathematics as a learner, planning for mathematics instruction, implementing mathematics instruction, and analyzing teaching episodes alongside a mathematics teacher who is also the mathematics teacher educator for a methods course. Teacher candidates reflected on this experience positively, noting the benefits of learning how to teach …

The Evolving Middle School Concept: This We (Still) Believe, Lisa Harrison, Penny A. Bishop Feb 2021

The Evolving Middle School Concept: This We (Still) Believe, Lisa Harrison, Penny A. Bishop

Current Issues in Middle Level Education

The Successful Middle School builds upon many decades of commitment to the middle school concept. The fifth edition of AMLE’s landmark position paper amplifies the importance of responding both to young adolescents’ developmental needs and to their social identities. The edition’s release amidst a global pandemic and increasing protests against racial injustice reminds us that responding to the full diversity of student experience is not optional. It is critical to helping young adolescents--and indeed the world--to thrive, now and in the future.

The Integer-Antimagic Spectra Of Graphs With A Chord, Richard M. Low, Dan Roberts, Jinze Zheng Feb 2021

The Integer-Antimagic Spectra Of Graphs With A Chord, Richard M. Low, Dan Roberts, Jinze Zheng

Theory & Applications of Graphs

Let Α be a nontrival abelian group. A connected simple graph G = (V, E) is Α-antimagic if there exists an edge labeling f: E(G) → A \ {0} such that the induced vertex labeling f+: V(G) → Α, defined by f+(v) = Σ{uv ∈ E(G) f(uv), is injective. The integer-antimagic spectrum of a graph G is the set IAM(G) = {k |G is {Ζ}k-antimagic} and k ≥2. In this paper, we determine the integer-antimagic spectra for cycles with a chord, paths with a chord, and wheels with a chord.

Covid-19 Pandemic In Brazil: Clinical Manifestation And Effect Of Comorbidities On Outcomes Of Hospitalized Sari Cases, Mario Keko, Karl E. Peace

Biostatistics, Epidemiology & Environmental Health Sciences: Faculty Publications

Hospitalized SARI cases of 2020 reported to the Ministry of Health of Brazil through the SIVEP Gripe system are subject to our analysis. They are classified as COVID-19 and non-COVID-19 and clinical manifestations and comorbidities are reported for each group. The time trend in the number of cases reported in 2020 is compared to the previous year and the performance of the PCR test is explored in each group. The proportion of death is reported among different subgroups of the patients by epidemiological week. Logistic and Poisson regression models are used to check the effect of comorbidities on clinical outcomes.

This article describes a self-study inquiry project designed and conducted by a self-study group at a Faculty of Education in an Atlantic Canadian University. The seven-member group engaged in a collaborative self-study inquiry while adopting Universal Design for Learning (UDL) principles in their teacher education practices and documented their professional learning. This yearlong self-study inquiry project encompassed several data collection methods to examine inclusive practices of self-study group members, including personal reflections, minutes of weekly meetings, artifacts, and field notes. This article focuses on how UDL provided a means for three group members to critically examine their inclusive practices at …

Development And Use Of Open Educational Resources In Research Methods For Psychology, Stephanie Da Silva Phd, Katherine White Jan 2021

Development And Use Of Open Educational Resources In Research Methods For Psychology, Stephanie Da Silva Phd, Katherine White

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

Research methods course(s), a standard in psychology programs, often use multiple textbooks to address conceptual and data-analytic information. This study involved transitioning from traditional textbooks to open educational resources in a research methods course. Two psychology instructors, each offering course sections, identified open-access textbooks that aligned with course learning objectives and developed instructional materials to accompany those textbooks. All materials were organized publicly in an institutional subject guide. We compared students’ grades, pretest-posttest scores, and survey reports of resource use and evaluation in a spring semester, when traditional/costly textbooks were used, to the following fall semester, when no-cost textbooks were …

What Can We Learn From Exam Grade Distributions?, Daniel R. Lewin Jan 2021

What Can We Learn From Exam Grade Distributions?, Daniel R. Lewin

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

A course with good learning outcomes is one in which most of the enrolled students achieve the mastery specified in the predefined learning objectives. Since the enrolment is invariably a mix of students with heterogeneous capabilities, the class average grade is a poor indicator of how the class is divided into at least two groups, of high- and low-performers. Clearly, achieving the desired outcomes implies increasing the proportion of high-performing students and their mean grade by providing appropriately designed teaching protocols. In this paper, the actual class grade distribution is approximated by a bimodal probability distribution function, whose parameters enable …

Exploring Exceptional Education Preservice Teachers’ Mathematics Anxiety, Gina Gresham Dr. Jan 2021

Exploring Exceptional Education Preservice Teachers’ Mathematics Anxiety, Gina Gresham Dr.

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

This study investigated preservice teachers’ levels of mathematics anxiety before and after a mathematics methods course. Changes were measured using manipulatives and other activities to make mathematics concepts more concrete and meaningful. Both quantitative and qualitative measures were utilized. Informal discussions, informal interviews, and questionnaire-guided narrative interviews were conducted. Data revealed a statistically significant reduction in mathematics anxiety (p < .001). Results have implications for teacher education programs concerning the measurement of mathematics anxiety levels among exceptional education preservice teachers and the determination of specific contexts in which mathematics anxiety can be interpreted and reduced.

The Morass Of Misconceptions: How Unjustified Beliefs Influence Pedagogy And Learning, Morgan Mcafee, Bobby Hoffman Jan 2021

The Morass Of Misconceptions: How Unjustified Beliefs Influence Pedagogy And Learning, Morgan Mcafee, Bobby Hoffman

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

When teachers harbor misconceptions or unjustified beliefs about teaching, learning, and academic motivation, the pedagogical consequences can be severe. It is likely these teachers will unintentionally perpetuate such false beliefs upon students through ineffective teaching strategies or misinterpretations of learning science. Misconceptions among K-12 teachers are particularly deleterious due to the substantial influence teacher beliefs exert upon curriculum development, pedagogy, and the construction of effective learning environments. Prior research has explicated the prevalence of erroneous beliefs about general psychology and neuroscience among various populations but has rarely examined teachers’ misconceptions about pertinent topics in educational psychology. Consequently, this review highlights …

Characteristics Of Rural Stem Clubs And Implications For Students With Disabilities, Karin M. Fisher, Peggy Shannon-Baker, Kelly Brooksher, Kania Greer

Elementary & Special Education: Faculty Publications

There are many benefits for students to participate in extracurricular science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) activities or clubs. It is also known that students with disabilities (SWD) do not participate as much as their peers without disabilities (SWOD). However, there is a lack of research on SWD and their participation in STEM clubs. This sequential explanatory mixed method study explored teachers’ perceptions of the types and characteristics of STEM clubs and their participants, and their professional development (PD) to work with SWD in their clubs. Findings suggest a variety of STEM clubs are offered with an average of 20 …

Less Is More: Course Redesign And The Development Of An Atmospheric Science Process Skills Assessment, Dawn M. Kopacz, Zachary J. Handlos

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

General education science courses strive to promote scientific literacy and the development of scientific process skills. However, research shows that many general education courses are still designed to stress content mastery. In this study, the number of topics in five semester-long introductory atmospheric science courses was reduced to increase time for the development of scientific process skills, a critical component of scientific literacy. The Atmospheric and Climate Science Literacy Frameworks and a general science education skills rubric were used to guide the course redesign and development of course activities. Details of the course structure and sample course activities are described. …

Lipid Metabolites As Energy Stores In Four Stingray Species, Lauren Moniz Jan 2021

Lipid Metabolites As Energy Stores In Four Stingray Species, Lauren Moniz

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

Assessing macronutrient transfer is important for estimating ecosystem health and structure. This nutrient transfer is facilitated through trophic position interactions and the consumption of biomass. Lipids are macronutrients that can be used to assess energy flow. Triglyceride (TAG) and free fatty acids (FFA) are important lipids that are obtained from diet and integrate into tissues. They are representative of energy stores and potential energy available for metabolic processes. In marine ecosystems, stingrays occupy the mesopredator niche, facilitating nutrient transfer from lower to higher trophic positions. Stingrays consume a variety of prey items ranging in lipid content, but how lipid metabolites …

Adapting To Slow-Moving Crises: The Personal Protection Equipment Supply Chain In The Time Of Covid19, Jennifer Shullih, Stephen Lemay Jan 2021

Adapting To Slow-Moving Crises: The Personal Protection Equipment Supply Chain In The Time Of Covid19, Jennifer Shullih, Stephen Lemay

AMTP Proceedings 2021

In this paper, we look at the supply chain for PPE during the COVID-19 pandemic of 2020. We look at the way the supply chain has responded to the pandemic, the coordination of the supply chain relative to the needs of primary users, and the consequences of its use. We find that the supply chain has continued to function more as a commercial supply chain than as an emergency supply chain largely because of a lack of centralized coordination. We include an analysis of existing concepts as they apply to this supply chain, but also incorporate preliminary results from a …

Why Aren't My Students Reading: Faculty & Student Research Unveiling The Hidden Curriculum Of Course Material Usage, Jayne R. Goode, Kerri K. Morris, Bradley Smith, J. Christopher Tweddle

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

This reflective essay follows a faculty working group as they attempt to understand barriers to access to course materials through the scholarship of teaching and learning (SoTL). Through the workgroup’s research and collaboration with students in a problem-based learning course, the workgroup uncovered elements of the hidden curriculum in assumptions regarding course material procurement. The collaboration has served as the foundation for efforts to begin to transform the way that faculty on campus make use of textbooks and course materials in their courses. This transformation should make explicit to faculty that the utilization of course materials for all aspects of …
