State Feedback Control Of A Single-Loop Thermosyphon System Via A Quotient Controller, Jonathan S. Tanner May 2007

State Feedback Control Of A Single-Loop Thermosyphon System Via A Quotient Controller, Jonathan S. Tanner

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

The objective of this work is to design a quotient controller to stabilize a chaotic flow in a single loop thermosyphon system with a high heat index. The thermosyphon loop is heated from below and cooled from above, which causes time-dependent chaotic flow when the external heat index is above a threshold value. Our goal was to stabilize the fluid into a convective uni-directional flow well into the chaotic regime. We also investigated adding a tracking integrator to the thermosyphon system to allow tracking to a specific temperature.

Analysis And Design Of One- And Two-Sided Cusum Charts With Known And Estimated Parameters, Martin Xavier Dunbar May 2007

Analysis And Design Of One- And Two-Sided Cusum Charts With Known And Estimated Parameters, Martin Xavier Dunbar

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

The integral equation and Markov chain methods for analyzing the performances of one- and two-sided CUSUM X charts with known and estimated in-control process parameters are studied. Some new integral equations for analyzing the two-sided CUSUM X are derived. These methods provide us with ways to approximate the run length distribution of the chart. Since parameters of the run length distribution are commonly used measures of the performance of a control chart, it is important to choose an accurate approximation method. We develop some new Markov chain approximations using methods similar to the methods for approximating a solution to integral …

Infaunal Abundance And Diversity In Vegetated And Unvegetated Areas Of A Georgia Salt Marsh, Anthony Lee Zukoff May 2007

Infaunal Abundance And Diversity In Vegetated And Unvegetated Areas Of A Georgia Salt Marsh, Anthony Lee Zukoff

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

Various commercially important marine species are known to utilize the salt marsh; research has shown that marsh infauna play an important role in the diets of these species. The distribution and abundance of some of these infauna has been shown to be influenced by vegetative cover. In 2001, salt marshes along the coast of Georgia began to die, resulting in the loss of the dominant vegetation. During the summer of 2005, six 0.5 x 0.5 meter quadrats were haphazardly placed and set up permanently in the low marsh at two study sites along the Crooked River in vegetated and unvegetated …

New Technology In Education As Viewed Through The Utopic And Dystopic Worlds Of Science Fiction, Vivian Elaine Jackson May 2007

New Technology In Education As Viewed Through The Utopic And Dystopic Worlds Of Science Fiction, Vivian Elaine Jackson

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

The use of educational technology has become a focus of reform efforts designed to enrich student learning. Proponents of technology view it as the panacea of education while others ask us to question this myth-information. Throughout America, school districts are designating millions of dollars for technology. Nevertheless, while there are schools with desirable infrastructures, too many schools are ill equipped for enhancing learning through technology. In addition, many classrooms house computers used to merely advance traditional teaching modes, e.g., drill and practice, rather than teach the importance of social responsibility for humankind and the environment through our use of technology. …

Progressive Education In Transition: An Intellectual History, Carolyn J. Faust

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

Using a critical, intellectual perspective that is supported as a conceptual framework and provides a solid basis for historical study, this theoretical research focused on the historical evidence of sustained progressive forms of education. The developments within the field of curriculum studies during the late 1800s transitioned through changes in the 1950s and 1960s and the movement forward with the reconceptualization of the field in the early 1970s were discussed. This reconceptualization of the field in the early 1970s provided a renewed texture from which to move forward in critiquing and changing curriculum theory. By understanding curriculum rather than focusing …
