K-12 Principals' Perceptions Of Their Technology Leadership Preparedness, Wendy Burns Metcalf May 2012

K-12 Principals' Perceptions Of Their Technology Leadership Preparedness, Wendy Burns Metcalf

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

Adopting technology in the K-12 classroom has moved from adapting lessons that highlight a technology to pervasive use of interactive and handheld devices. This instruction-technology connection creates high expectations to engage today's learners and transform education to support 21st century skills. School leaders have the complex task of incorporating technologies to enhance teaching and learning. The 2009 NETS-A standards were used to define the dimensions of leader preparedness for a technology-rich environment. The research design used a quasi-experimental quantitative study to identify leaders' perceptions of technology leadership preparedness and to determine the impact of one program, the Quality-Plus Leader Academy …

A Description Of Accommodations, Modifications, And Forms Of Assessments In Middle Schools That Made Adequate Yearly Progress In An Urban County During 2010, Quinton Joel Morris May 2012

A Description Of Accommodations, Modifications, And Forms Of Assessments In Middle Schools That Made Adequate Yearly Progress In An Urban County During 2010, Quinton Joel Morris

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

Students with disabilities (SWD) have frequently been one of the subgroups not to make adequate yearly progress (AYP) in middle schools. If one subgroup does not meet the required objectives for meeting Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP), the entire school does not meet AYP. The purpose of this study was to identify accommodations, modifications, and forms of assessments that inclusion teachers find useful in middle schools that made adequately yearly progress. The researcher conducted a quantitative study. This study was a descriptive study using survey data. A total of 78 inclusion teachers participated in the study. The data indicated that inclusion …

The Effect Of Classroom Structure And Practice On Transition To Middle School, Eric Paul Schexnaildre May 2012

The Effect Of Classroom Structure And Practice On Transition To Middle School, Eric Paul Schexnaildre

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

The passage from elementary school to middle school, along with physical, social, and emotional changes associated with adolescence, often results in personal and social, organizational, and academic declines. The classroom structure of elementary school varies between a team teaching setting and a self-contained setting, and each instructional environment has the potential to impact all areas of development for each student. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between fifth grade classroom setting (team teaching vs. self-contained) and sixth grade student behavior. The gender and the socio-economic status of transitioning students also served as variables of the study. …

Class Size And Academic Achievement, Kristy Chandler Vandenberg

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

The purpose of this two-phase, sequential mixed methods (QUAN-qual) approach was to analyze the relationship between class size and academic achievement in rural, economically disadvantaged third grade classrooms and how teachers perceive class size as affecting their instructional and classroom management methods. Data collection and analysis for the study involved 3,812 third grade students in 204 classrooms collected from nine rural, economically disadvantaged school districts in the southeastern region of Georgia. Additionally, a researcher-developed questionnaire was used to collect data from third grade teachers teaching in the same nine rural, economically disadvantaged school districts. Initial correlation analyses indicated a positive …

Formulæ For The Number Of Partitions Of N Into At Most M Parts (Using The Quazi-Polynomial Ansatz), Andrew Sills, Doron Zeilberger May 2012

Formulæ For The Number Of Partitions Of N Into At Most M Parts (Using The Quazi-Polynomial Ansatz), Andrew Sills, Doron Zeilberger

Mathematical Sciences: Faculty Publications

The purpose of this short article is to announce, and briefly describe, a Maple package, PARTITIONS, that (inter alia) completely automatically discovers, and then proves, explicit expressions (as sums of quasi-polynomials) for pm(n) for any desired m. We do this to demonstrate the power of “rigorous guessing” as facilitated by the quasi-polynomial ansatz.

On Discriminating Between Geometric Strategies Of Surface-Based Orientation, Bradley R. Sturz, Kent D. Bodily Apr 2012

On Discriminating Between Geometric Strategies Of Surface-Based Orientation, Bradley R. Sturz, Kent D. Bodily

Psychology: Faculty Publications

Recently, a debate has manifested in the spatial learning literature regarding the shape parameters by which mobile organisms orient with respect to the environment. On one hand are principal-axis-based strategies which suggest that organisms extract the major and minor principal axes of space which pass through the centroid and approximate length and width of the entire space, respectively. On the other hand are medial-axis-based strategies which suggest that organisms extract a trunk-and-branch system similar to the skeleton of a shape. With competing explanations comes the necessity to devise experiments capable of producing divergent predictions. Here, we suggest that a recent …

Generalized Borcea-Voisin Construction, Jimmy Dillies Apr 2012

Generalized Borcea-Voisin Construction, Jimmy Dillies

Mathematical Sciences: Faculty Publications

C. Voisin and C. Borcea have constructed mirror pairs of families of Calabi-Yau threefolds by taking the quotient of the product of an elliptic curve with a K3 surface endowed with a non-symplectic involution. In this paper, we generalize the construction of Borcea and Voisin to any prime order and build three and four dimensional Calabi-Yau orbifolds. We classify the topological types that are obtained and show that, in dimension 4, orbifolds built with an involution admit a crepant resolution and come in topological mirror pairs. We show that for odd primes, there are generically no minimal resolutions and the …

Lecture Hall Sequences, Q-Series, And Asymmetric Partition Identities, Sylvie Corteel, Carla D. Savage, Andrew Sills Mar 2012

Lecture Hall Sequences, Q-Series, And Asymmetric Partition Identities, Sylvie Corteel, Carla D. Savage, Andrew Sills

Mathematical Sciences: Faculty Publications

We use generalized lecture hall partitions to discover a new pair of q-series identities. These identities are unusual in that they involve partitions into parts from asymmetric residue classes, much like the little Göllnitz partition theorems. We derive a two-parameter generalization of our identities that, surprisingly, gives new analytic counterparts of the little Göllnitz theorems. Finally, we show that the little Göllnitz theorems also involve “lecture hall sequences,” that is, sequences constrained by the ratio of consecutive parts.
