Numerical Analysis Of Biodiesel Combustion In A Direct Injection Compression Ignition Engine, Kyle D. Morse

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

In this work, simulations of the combustion reaction within an optical Sandia/Cummins N14 direct-injection compression ignition engine are conducted. First, validation of the spray model against liquid and vapor penetration data was conducted using a trial and error method. Secondly, the overall engine model was validated against pressure and temperature data across high and low temperature combustion regimes. The third phase of the work was focused on creating a combustion model for biodiesel. The fourth and final phase was to test the biodiesel combustion model in the pertinent combustion regimes. The agreement with common trends in emissions of biodiesel combustion …

Is There A Difference In Motivation And Mathematics Self-Efficacy Among Online Mathematics Instructional Video Viewers, Charles Edgar Hampton Jan 2014

Is There A Difference In Motivation And Mathematics Self-Efficacy Among Online Mathematics Instructional Video Viewers, Charles Edgar Hampton

Instructional Technology Education Specialist Research Papers

Researching US K-12 STEM proficiency reveals severe and widespread consequences, for post-secondary and vocational environments. Sources in both environments cite lack of skills and competency as the major cause of increasing remedial mathematics enrollment and growing unemployment. One reasonable and simple method of better preparing students is the viewing online mathematics instructional videos. Online mathematics instructional videos are widely available, efficacious, and free to access via KhanAcademy.org and YouTube’s Education portal. Mobile, personal, and desktop technology device ownership and free WIFI or reduced price Internet service is increasing dramatically each year, so means of access are not a problem. This …

The Use Of Personal Responders In The Elementary Reading Classroom, Mitzi B. Helms Jan 2014

The Use Of Personal Responders In The Elementary Reading Classroom, Mitzi B. Helms

Instructional Technology Education Specialist Research Papers

This quasi-experimental study utilized a pretest-posttest design to determine if personal responders increased students’ comprehension level in a first grade classroom. The control group was the group that was taught reading comprehension strategies using traditional teaching methods. The experimental group was taught reading comprehension strategies using personal responders. This group was instructed using the same strategies as the control group except the experimental group used personal responders in the place of pencils and worksheets. The researcher was the instructor for the experimental group, and another first grade teacher at the school was the instructor for the control group. Each group …

Note On Rainbow Connection In Oriented Graphs With Diameter 2, Rebecca Holliday, Colton Magnant, Pouria Salehi Nowbandegani Jan 2014

Note On Rainbow Connection In Oriented Graphs With Diameter 2, Rebecca Holliday, Colton Magnant, Pouria Salehi Nowbandegani

Mathematical Sciences: Faculty Publications

In this note, we provide a sharp upper bound on the rainbow connection number of tournaments of diameter $2$. For a tournament $T$ of diameter $2$, we show $2 \leq \overrightarrow{rc}(T) \leq 3$. Furthermore, we provide a general upper bound on the rainbow $k$-connection number of tournaments as a simple example of the probabilistic method. Finally, we show that an edge-colored tournament of $k^{th}$ diameter $2$ has rainbow $k$-connection number at most approximately $k^{2}$.

Building A Better Bijection Between Classes Of Compositions, James D. Diffenderfer Jan 2014

Building A Better Bijection Between Classes Of Compositions, James D. Diffenderfer

Mathematical Sciences: Faculty Publications

A bijective proof is given for the following theorem: The number of compositions of n into parts congruent to a (mod b) equals the number of compositions of n + b - a into parts congruent to b (mod a) that are greater than or equal to b. The bijection is then shown to preserve palindromicity.

Using Clickers To Collect Formative Feedback On Teaching: A Tool For Faculty Development, Erica Gunn Jan 2014

Using Clickers To Collect Formative Feedback On Teaching: A Tool For Faculty Development, Erica Gunn

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

Incorporation of clicker technology in an introductory chemistry class is described as a method for collecting and automatically tabulating student feedback for use in formative faculty development. Students are polled in real-time on issues of classroom management and the success of various teaching methods. Tabulated data is displayed on the classroom screen and used to facilitate classroom discussion. This method was introduced in a first-year general chemistry class for non-majors and resulted in unusually high student evaluation marks in categories related to communication with the instructor. The success of the method was evaluated using mid-semester and final student evaluations, informal …

The Simmons World Challenge is a unique, interdisciplinary program recently developed at Simmons College. It immerses students in an intensive winter-session course that challenges them to tackle a pressing social issue, such as poverty or hunger, and create actionable solutions to the problem. The program was conceived and designed to harness the strengths of pedagogical theories on transformational teaching and learning. This article describes the Simmons World Challenge and presents assessment findings from the program’s third iteration in 2013, as well as on the long-term impact of the program based on follow-up assessments with the first two cohorts of students. …

Introductory Biology Course Reform: A Tale Of Two Courses, Michele I. Shuster Phd, Ralph Preszler Jan 2014

Introductory Biology Course Reform: A Tale Of Two Courses, Michele I. Shuster Phd, Ralph Preszler

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

Over the past eight years we have undertaken iterative cycles of course reform in two introductory biology courses: Biology 111 and Biology 211. Our revisions of these formerly “traditional” lecture courses have included in-class case studies with and without peer facilitators and peer-facilitated small-group workshops.

Based on analyses of overall pass rates, as well as pass rates by gender and by underrepresented minority (URM) status, we have found that there are differences in the effectiveness of alternative course models in the two courses. In Biol 111, required peer-facilitated workshops improved overall student performance, especially for URM and female students (Preszler, …

Improving Mathematics: An Examination Of The Effects Of Specific Cognitive Abilities On College-Age Students’ Mathematics Achievement, Gordon E. Taub, Nicholas Benson, Judit Szente Jan 2014

Improving Mathematics: An Examination Of The Effects Of Specific Cognitive Abilities On College-Age Students’ Mathematics Achievement, Gordon E. Taub, Nicholas Benson, Judit Szente

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

This study investigated the effects of general intelligence and seven specific cognitive abilities on college-age students’ mathematics achievement. The present investigation went beyond previous research by employing structural equation modeling. It also represents the first study to examine the direct and indirect effects of general and specific cognitive abilities, simultaneously, on the mathematics achievement of college-age students. A model developed using the Cattell-Horn-Carroll theory of intelligence was the theoretical model used in all analyses. Data from 1,054 college-age students who participated in the standardization of the Woodcock–Johnson III (Woodcock, McGrew, & Mather, 2001) were divided into a calibration sample set …

Assessing The Impact Of A K-12 Engagement Program On Graduate Learning Outcomes For Communicating With Diverse Audiences, Pedagogy, And Community Engagement, Faith Weeks, Jon Harbor

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

A large midwestern university has developed a program that places graduate students in middle school classrooms to enhance the graduate students’ communication skills with diverse audiences, develop pedagogical knowledge, and provide a foundation for effective future K-12 engagement. After observing and co-teaching, participants develop and implement a standards- and inquiry-based lesson that brings their graduate research theme into the classroom. To provide insights into impacts on graduate students, qualitative methods were used to identify emergent themes in narratives written by graduate student participants. Major themes included new awareness of challenges in effective teaching for diverse audiences, insight into effective strategies …

Investigating Transnational Collaboration Of Faculty Development And Learning: An Argument For Making Learning Culturally Relevant, Dr. Janine F. Allen Jan 2014

Investigating Transnational Collaboration Of Faculty Development And Learning: An Argument For Making Learning Culturally Relevant, Dr. Janine F. Allen

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

Professional development offered to higher education faculty is meant to enhance pedagogy and improve practice. Inspired by a transnational partnership in Southeast Asia, this study aimed to discover how teacher education faculty perceived faculty development offered to them by university partnership colleagues from the United States. Survey findings indicate that certain faculty development strategies improved teaching and assessment practices and enhanced self-reflection. However, evidence also showed some negative faculty perceptions in relation to the US partner’s methodologies, and qualitative responses indicated a lack of relevancy to the Southeastern Asia context. Furthermore, negative correlations were found between faculty development workshops and …

A Decomposition Of Gallai Multigraphs, Alexander Halperin, Colton Magnant, Kyle Pula Jan 2014

A Decomposition Of Gallai Multigraphs, Alexander Halperin, Colton Magnant, Kyle Pula

Mathematical Sciences: Faculty Publications

An edge-colored cycle is rainbow if its edges are colored with distinct colors. A Gallai (multi)graph is a simple, complete, edge-colored (multi)graph lacking rainbow triangles. As has been previously shown for Gallai graphs, we show that Gallai multigraphs admit a simple iterative construction. We then use this structure to prove Ramsey-type results within Gallai colorings. Moreover, we show that Gallai multigraphs give rise to a surprising and highly structured decomposition into directed trees.

A New Class Of Generalized Dagum Distribution With Applications To Income And Lifetime Data, Broderick O. Oluyede, Shujiao Huang, Mavis Pararai

Mathematical Sciences: Faculty Publications

The generalized beta distribution of the second kind (GB2), McDonald [11], McDonald and Xu [12] is an important distribution with applications in finance and actuarial sciences, as well as economics, where Dagum distribution which is a sub-model of GB2 distribution plays an important role in size distribution of personal income. In this note, a new class of generalized Dagum distribution called gamma-Dagum distribution is presented. The gamma-Dagum (GD) distribution which includes the gamma-Burr III (GB III), gamma-Fisk or gamma-log logistic (GF of GLLog), Zografos and Balakrishnan-Dagum (ZB-D), ZB-Burr III (ZB-B III), ZB-Fisk of ZB-Log logistic (ZB-F or ZB-LLog), Burr III …

Discrete Fourier Restriction Associated With Schrödinger Equations, Yi Hu, Xiaochun Li Jan 2014

Discrete Fourier Restriction Associated With Schrödinger Equations, Yi Hu, Xiaochun Li

Mathematical Sciences: Faculty Publications

In this paper, we present a different proof on the discrete Fourier restriction. The proof recovers Bourgain’s level set result on Strichartz estimates associated with Schrödinger equations on torus. Some sharp estimates on L 2(d+2) d norm of certain exponential sums in higher dimensional cases are established. As an application, we show that some discrete multilinear maximal functions are bounded on L 2 (Z).

Determinants Of Incidence And Hessian Matrices Arising From The Vector Space Lattice, Saeed Nasseh, Alexandra Seceleanu, Junzo Watanabe Jan 2014

Determinants Of Incidence And Hessian Matrices Arising From The Vector Space Lattice, Saeed Nasseh, Alexandra Seceleanu, Junzo Watanabe

Mathematical Sciences: Faculty Publications

We give explicit formulas for the determinants of the incidence and Hessian matrices arising from the interaction between the rank 1 and rank n−1 level sets of the subspace lattice of an n-dimensional finite vector space. Our exploration is motivated by the fact that both of these matrices arise naturally in the study of the combinatorial and algebraic Lefschetz properties for the vector space lattice and the graded Artinian Gorenstein algebra associated to it, respectively.

Paper 1: A Proposed Pedagogical Approach For Preparing Teacher Candidates To Incorporate (Academic) Language, Woong Lim, Lynn Stallings

Georgia Association of Mathematics Teacher Educators (GAMTE) Annual Conference (2007-2019)

The edTPA is a performance-based assessment that aims to measure teacher candidates’ readiness for teaching. Beginning in the fall of 2015, this assessment will be a mandatory requirement for those seeking certification in Georgia. General agreement exists in the field of education about the basic knowledge and skills essential for beginning teachers to demonstrate in classroom teaching. Does edTPA measure the knowledge and skills essential for beginning mathematics teachers in particular? Assuming that edTPA can successfully measure that knowledge and skills for beginning teachers, the use of the assessment could be valuable.

One of the critical components of edTPA is …

Paper 2: Design Considerations For Visually-Aided Discussion Prompts: Emphasizing Mathematical Reasoning In Teacher Education, Anne Marie S. Marshall, Kadian M. Callahan

Georgia Association of Mathematics Teacher Educators (GAMTE) Annual Conference (2007-2019)

The availability and familiarity of online discussion tools create new instructional options that teacher educators can use to foster prospective teachers’ understanding of mathematics. In particular, online discussion blogs provide an avenue through which teacher educators can press prospective teachers to explore mathematical concepts and share their mathematical reasoning with peers. Furthermore, by incorporating visual stimulations as a design component of these discussion blogs, prospective teachers can make sense of and respond to others’ ideas about mathematical concepts with greater clarity. This paper shares preliminary findings of a research study that examined the extent to which the design of a …

Paper 3: Differences In Beliefs Across A Series Of Four Mathematics Content Courses, Susanna Molitoris Miller, Caitlin Walkey

Georgia Association of Mathematics Teacher Educators (GAMTE) Annual Conference (2007-2019)

College students often ask questions such as, “Why do I have to take this class? Is there a point to it?” For Early Childhood Education (ECE) majors these questions may often take on a slightly different form, wondering, “How can I incorporate this information into my classroom?” or “Do I understand this well enough to teach this to my students?” It is especially important for pre- service teachers to feel confident working with the mathematical content that they are learning and for them to believe that they can successfully teach that same information to a group of students. Paper 4: Do You See What I See? Deepening Teachers’ Understanding Of Linear Equations Through Student Interviews, Tamara Pearson, Kelli Nipper, Catherine Matos

Georgia Association of Mathematics Teacher Educators (GAMTE) Annual Conference (2007-2019)

Many teachers have trouble transitioning their students between natural recursive thinking about the data and algebraic notation for representing linear functions (Zazkis & Liljedahl, 2002).

In this study, we interviewed eighteen middle school students to see how they used prior instruction to think about a geometric pattern and construct its corresponding linear equation. All students

were given the same task to complete and were questioned about their thinking during the interview.

We found that the recording of pattern recognition plays a substantial part in helping students recognize and write explicit patterns. By having students decompose the total perimeter into how …

Paper 6: A Mathematics Teacher’S Journey Of Identity Construction And Change, Anthony B. Stinson

Georgia Association of Mathematics Teacher Educators (GAMTE) Annual Conference (2007-2019)

Despite some gains, improving mathematics instruction remains an area of concern in the United States. The implementation of the Common Core Standards and the challenge of teaching the 21st Century student require mathematics teachers to examine their pedagogy to determine if they need to change or improve their practices. This paper provides a personal account of my journey when determining my identity as a mathematics teacher and how constructing my identity helped in changing and improving my practices as a mathematics teacher. The study was done using autoethnography, a burgeoning research method, and identity theory. This study has the goals …
