Paper 1: Engaging In Lesson Study At Georgia College, Angel R. Abney, Brandon Samples, Doris Santarone Jan 2015

Paper 1: Engaging In Lesson Study At Georgia College, Angel R. Abney, Brandon Samples, Doris Santarone

Georgia Association of Mathematics Teacher Educators (GAMTE) Annual Conference (2007-2019)

A lesson study cycle is a professional development process that integrates research and reflection through collaboration. The cycle allows a group to refine a lesson based on these collaboration efforts such as interaction with students and the post-lesson discussion. Secondary pre-service teachers in a mathematics methods course engaged in a lesson study cycle through collaboration between in-service teachers, Georgia College professors, and students in a local high school classroom. We systematically investigated this process to determine that through preparing, enacting and reflecting on their practice, Pre-service Teachers (PST) developed insight, reasoning, and understanding of the mathematics that they taught.

Paper 2: Using Ti-Nspire To Engage Preservice Mathematics Teachers In An Exploratory Geometry Module, Alesia D. Mickle, Pier A. Junor Clarke

Georgia Association of Mathematics Teacher Educators (GAMTE) Annual Conference (2007-2019)

In the mathematics classroom, most preservice mathematics teachers possess basic skills to use technology as an instructional strategy in communicating content standards. However, today’s demands for preservice teachers to engage in a variety of “best teaching practices” in their preservice teaching and edTPA requirements can oftentimes place the acquisition of technical skills and integration of new technology in content curriculum far from the forefront of their minds. Ertmer, Conklin, Lewandowski, Osika, Selo, and Wignall (2003) acknowledged preservice teachers’ desires to gain the adequate technical skills necessary to use technology in teachers’ daily tasks of facilitating and managing their classrooms. They …

Understanding Each Other - Developing Positive Relationships With Challenging Students, Ann M. Van Buskirk Ph.D., Kimberly Oliver Robinson Ph.D. Jan 2015

Understanding Each Other - Developing Positive Relationships With Challenging Students, Ann M. Van Buskirk Ph.D., Kimberly Oliver Robinson Ph.D.

Georgia Association for Positive Behavior Support Conference

Everyone has encountered someone who is hard to like and may not "fit" well with our own personality. As parents, we do not choose the temperament of our children, and as educators we often do not choose the students in our classroom. Studies have suggested that for every 10 students, 2-3 will be a "perfect match" for the teacher, 6-7 may be a “good fit” and often at least one student will present significant challenges for her or his teacher. Many of the challenges faced by parents and educators in working with students are exacerbated by lack of understanding and …

Building Community Among Staff And Fostering Teacher Buy-In, Melanie D. James, Cheryl S. Sewell Jan 2015

Building Community Among Staff And Fostering Teacher Buy-In, Melanie D. James, Cheryl S. Sewell

Georgia Association for Positive Behavior Support Conference

Our presentation would focus on building positive relationships among staff members within the school, establishing a positive school culture, improving teacher morale, and fostering teacher-buy in. We believe that the success of the PBIS program at our school hinges upon the fact that our teachers bought into the program and model respect for each other. We have a family-like culture within our building which has developed over time due to creative initiatives that we put into place. Although our presentation would not specifically address strategies that parents could use in the home, it would show how a positive culture at …

School-Wide Pbis Start-Up Tools, Matthew Donahue, Emily Smith, Erin Armour Jan 2015

School-Wide Pbis Start-Up Tools, Matthew Donahue, Emily Smith, Erin Armour

Georgia Association for Positive Behavior Support Conference

River Eves Elementary School has experienced immediate success with our initial PBIS structure this school year. In an effort to embrace the concept of investing in “The Power of Positive Supports: Home, School, and Community,” River Eves has integrated our former Character Education program with our new PBIS framework. The PBIS committee is broken into smaller sub-committees in order to maximize addressing school-wide PBIS needs (ex: data, RTI, curriculum, and funds).

Every month has been assigned a specific character concept; each grade-level team constructed developmentally appropriate monthly units so that behavior could be taught to students and connected to positive …

Stars And Stakeholders: Leaders Linking School Climate To Sustainable Success, Anne-Marie Jones, Nancy Purcell Jan 2015

Stars And Stakeholders: Leaders Linking School Climate To Sustainable Success, Anne-Marie Jones, Nancy Purcell

Georgia Association for Positive Behavior Support Conference

“Perception is reality.” This presentation will individually address each stakeholder group within the school and discuss how their experiences impact both the climate and culture of each school. These experiences and perceptions directly tie to a school’s Climate Star Rating and in turn, the CCRPI Score. As educators and administrators we highlight our strengths and strive to tackle any concerns or issues, but even the smallest problem can escalate quickly and impact student, teacher, parent and community perceptions of your school. This session is designed to showcase effective strategies implemented throughout the Glynn County School System that are targeted at …

Function Based Interventions, Pbis, And North Metro Gnets Student Successes, Cassandra A. Holifield Dr, Kimberly Thorpe, Jessica Schuster Jan 2015

Function Based Interventions, Pbis, And North Metro Gnets Student Successes, Cassandra A. Holifield Dr, Kimberly Thorpe, Jessica Schuster

Georgia Association for Positive Behavior Support Conference

Functional Behavioral Assessments are generally considered to be a problem-solving process for addressing student problem behavior. FBAs rely on a variety of techniques and strategies to identify the purposes of specific behavior that help IEP teams select interventions that directly address the problem behavior. A functional behavioral assessment looks beyond student behavior itself. The focus when conducting a functional behavioral assessment is to identify significant, pupil-specific social/emotional, affective, cognitive, and/or environmental factors associated with the occurrence (and non-occurrence) of specific behaviors. The broader perspective of an FBA offers a better understanding of the function or purpose behind student behavior. Behavior …

Operational, Now What? Sustaining High Quality Methods Of Pbis Implementation., Dr. Oatanisha R. Dawson, April Kilroy, Amy Yacobacci

Georgia Association for Positive Behavior Support Conference

Since 2011 Glynn County Schools’ commitment to SW-PBIS has been a collaborative effort between school leaders, teachers and stakeholders. Within each phase, challenges to PBIS implementation were met that could have potentially compromised its effectiveness. During the readiness stage, teacher buy-in and stakeholder support had to be tackled head-on. Creativity, faculty and staff motivation, and parental involvement were a concern as each school emerged into full implementation. Now, after acquiring and maintaining operational status, Glynn County’s school leaders merge trend data with survey results to prioritize target areas. In this session, school leaders will highlight strategies to reduce office discipline …

Surface Structure And Surface Kinetics Of Inn Grown By Plasma-Assisted Atomic Layer Epitaxy: A Hreels Study, Ananta Acharya, Brian D. Thoms, Neeraj Nepal, Charles R. Eddy Jr. Jan 2015

Surface Structure And Surface Kinetics Of Inn Grown By Plasma-Assisted Atomic Layer Epitaxy: A Hreels Study, Ananta Acharya, Brian D. Thoms, Neeraj Nepal, Charles R. Eddy Jr.

Physics & Astronomy: Faculty Publications

The surface bonding configuration and kinetics of hydrogen desorption from InN grown by plasma-assisted atomic layer epitaxy have been investigated. High resolution electron energy loss spectra exhibited loss peaks assigned to a Fuchs–Kliewer surface phonon, N-N and N-H surface species. The surface N-N vibrations are attributed to surface defects. The observation of N-H but no In-Hsurface species suggested N-terminated InN. Isothermal desorption data were best fit by the first-order desorption kinetics with an activation energy of (0.88 ± 0.06) eV and pre-exponential factor of (1.5 ± 0.5) × 105 s−1.

A Test Score Comparison Between Block And Traditional Scheduling, Yancy J. Ford Jan 2015

A Test Score Comparison Between Block And Traditional Scheduling, Yancy J. Ford

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to examine how schools utilizing block scheduling and traditional scheduling models differ in achievement levels on the five Georgia End-of-Course Exams (EOCT) and the Georgia High School Graduation Writing test (GHSWT) at two high schools in ruralSouth Georgia. The researcher will investigated if there is a differential benefit in terms of higher EOCT/GHSWT scores during block or traditional scheduling when considering demographic variables student gender, race, or SES. No experimentation occurred as the study relied on historical data. Both high schools were examined individually; comparing the five EOCT’s and the GHSWT under the block …

Improved Full-Newton-Step Infeasible Interior-Point Method For Linear Complementarity Problems, Mustafa Ozen Jan 2015

Improved Full-Newton-Step Infeasible Interior-Point Method For Linear Complementarity Problems, Mustafa Ozen

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

In this thesis, we present an improved version of Infeasible Interior-Point Method (IIPM) for monotone Linear Complementarity Problem (LCP). One of the most important advantages of this version in compare to old version is that it only requires feasibility steps. In the earlier version, each iteration consisted of one feasibility step and some centering steps (at most three in practice). The improved version guarantees that after one feasibility step, the new iterated point is feasible and close enough to central path. Thus, the centering steps are eliminated. This improvement is based on the Lemma(Roos, 2015). Thanks to this lemma, proximity …

Enumerating Graphs Using Integrals From Quantum Field Theory, William A. Coggins Jan 2015

Enumerating Graphs Using Integrals From Quantum Field Theory, William A. Coggins

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

Enumerating graphs is a relatively new subfield of mathematics. In this thesis, we will discuss a enumerative method that derives from Quantum Field Theory. We begin with the basic ideas of Calculus and extend them into a enumerative method that will allow us to classify graphs embedded on surfaces.

Objective Predictor Metric Of Annoyance For Hydraulic Engine Mount Cavitation, John Powell Jan 2015

Objective Predictor Metric Of Annoyance For Hydraulic Engine Mount Cavitation, John Powell

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

Vehicle acoustics has been found to have a direct impact on customer experience. Unexpected noises play a role in this experience. Hydraulic engine mount cavitation, the noise heard from the collapse of vapor bubbles in the mount, is considered one of those unexpected noises. During the design phase of a vehicle when an unexpected noise is found there is a need for a method to quantify how much of the noise is too much. Subjective evaluations alone are not enough due to variability from engineer to engineer. An objective way needed to be developed in order to evaluate the cavitation …

The Road Less Traveled: Alumni Perceptions Of The Georgia Early College High School Experience, Tequila Tranise Morgan Jan 2015

The Road Less Traveled: Alumni Perceptions Of The Georgia Early College High School Experience, Tequila Tranise Morgan

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

Despite the efforts of traditional high schools to educate all students, at-risk populations tend to lag behind their White and more affluent counterparts in educational achievement, high school graduation rates, and college attendance rates. Early College High Schools (ECHSs) were designed to attract and retain at-risk students through rigorous academic practices, strong support systems, and by providing free access to college credits while students are still in high school.

With the case study approach as a guide, this research used an open-ended interview protocol to collect data from a sample of 16 students who attended one ECHS in Georgia between …

Testing Data Vault-Based Data Warehouse, Connard N. Williams Jan 2015

Testing Data Vault-Based Data Warehouse, Connard N. Williams

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

Data warehouse (DW) projects are undertakings that require integration of disparate sources of data, a well-defined mapping of the source data to the reconciled data, and effective Extract, Transform, and Load (ETL) processes. Owing to the complexity of data warehouse projects, great emphasis must be placed on an agile-based approach with properly developed and executed test plans throughout the various stages of designing, developing, and implementing the data warehouse to mitigate against budget overruns, missed deadlines, low customer satisfaction, and outright project failures. Yet, there are often attempts to test the data warehouse exactly like traditional back-end databases and legacy …

How And Why Digital Generation Teachers Use Technology In The Classroom: An Explanatory Sequential Mixed Methods Study, Lan Li, Eric Worch, Yuchun Zhou, Rhonda Aguiton Jan 2015

How And Why Digital Generation Teachers Use Technology In The Classroom: An Explanatory Sequential Mixed Methods Study, Lan Li, Eric Worch, Yuchun Zhou, Rhonda Aguiton

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

While teachers’ conservative attitude toward technology has been identified as a barrier to effective technology integration in classrooms, it is often optimistically assumed that this issue will resolve when the digital generation enters the teaching profession (Morris, 2012). Using a mixed methodology approach, this study aimed to examine the current technology usage of digital generation student teachers and the impact of possible internal and external barriers (such as self-efficacy, risk taking, and technology access and support) on their use of technology. Seventy-one student teachers first responded to an online survey regarding their technology use in classrooms. Afterwards, six participants were …

Gang Risk Factors And Academic Readiness In A Southern Middle School, James Martinez, Jeremy Tost, Shani Wilfred, Larry Hilgert Dec 2014

Gang Risk Factors And Academic Readiness In A Southern Middle School, James Martinez, Jeremy Tost, Shani Wilfred, Larry Hilgert

Georgia Educational Researcher

The current Georgia study examines middle-school-aged gang and non-gang members regarding the risk factors of gang membership and potential effects of these risk factors on academic achievement. Participants, 406 eighth grade students from a suburban middle-school, completed a 42-item survey assessing an array of demographic and risk factor variables. In addition, students provided self-report information regarding their success on national standardized testing used to measure academics readiness. Of the 28 variables analyzed, lower academic readiness was associated with ethnicity and/or gang membership. Findings are discussed in light of the complexity of the gang issue and the importance of recognizing the …
