Earth, Environment & Sustainability: Faculty Publications

In vegetated landscapes, rain must pass through plant canopies and litter to enter soils. As a result, some rainwater is returned to the atmosphere (i.e., interception, I) and the remainder is partitioned into a canopy (and gap) drip flux (i.e., throughfall) or drained down the stem (i.e., stemflow). Current theoretical and numerical modeling frameworks for this process are almost exclusively based on data from woody overstory plants. However, herbaceous plants often populate the understory and are the primary cover for important ecosystems (e.g., grasslands and croplands). This study investigates how overstory throughfall (PT,o) is partitioned into …

Design Of A Methanol Reformer For On-Board Production Of Hydrogen As Fuel For A 3kw High-Temperature Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cell Power System, Vladimir Gurau, Adedayo Ogunleke, F. Strickland

Manufacturing Engineering: Faculty Publications (2015-2023)

The method of Computational Fluid Dynamics is used to predict the process parameters and select the optimum operating regime of a methanol reformer for on-board production of hydrogen as fuel for a 3 kW High-Temperature Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cell power system. The analysis uses a three reactions kinetics model for methanol steam reforming, water gas shift and methanol decomposition reactions on Cu/ZnO/Al2O3 catalyst. Numerical simulations are performed at single channel level for a range of reformer operating temperatures and values of the molar flow rate of methanol per weight of catalyst at the reformer inlet. Two operating regimes of …

One Student At A Time: How An Innovative Charter School Succeeds With Dropout Recovery, Joe Lewis, Letitia Basford Dr. Aug 2020

One Student At A Time: How An Innovative Charter School Succeeds With Dropout Recovery, Joe Lewis, Letitia Basford Dr.

National Youth Advocacy & Resilience Journal

In this paper, the authors examine how a charter high school in a large upper-Midwest city is successfully serving students who have not succeeded in the traditional school system and are in danger of experiencing the school-to-prison pipeline. The school accomplishes this through its enactment of five key qualities: 1. A casual, family-like atmosphere; 2. Commitment to a small, close-knit community; 3. Creative responses to absenteeism; 4. Extreme patience and flexibility in the classroom; 5. Innovative, trade-focused programs. The authors also examine the central challenges the school faces as it works to serve this group effectively. The paper describes an …

Encompassing A Sense Of Belonging With Youth: Art-Based Exploration In Urban Gardening, Chasity D. Tompkins, Casey D. Mull, Nykita Howell, Lori Bledsoe

National Youth Advocacy & Resilience Journal

This article showcases an arts-based project incorporating designs from youth participants in Project GROWL (Growing Real Opportunities in Work and Life). Project GROWL incorporates agricultural and environmental education with personal and professional development skills. Youth participants actively engage in an urban garden. These paintings were completed by youth and sprayed with a clear overcoat to protect them from the weather. All paintings and bee boxes were placed strategically around the urban garden to promote visual stamina for human and pollinating visitors. By creating these art pieces for the garden, youth found a deeper sense of belonging with this outdoor space. …

Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 Transmission Potential, Iran, 2020, Kamalich Muniz-Rodriguez, Isaac Fung, Shayesteh R. Ferdosi, Sylvia Ofori, Yiseul Lee, Amna Tariq, Gerardo Chowell

Biostatistics, Epidemiology & Environmental Health Sciences: Faculty Publications

To determine the transmission potential of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 in Iran in 2020, we estimated the reproduction number as 4.4 (95% CI 3.9–4.9) by using a generalized growth model and 3.5 (95% CI 1.3–8.1) by using epidemic doubling time. The reproduction number decreased to 1.55 after social distancing interventions were implemented.

Research & Economic Development

Executive Summary

Georgia Southern University is well-positioned to serve the local region and global community by engaging in public impact research. Public impact research matches community (broadly defined) needs with University resources to help solve the most pressing societal problems. Positioning Georgia Southern University as a public impact research institution aligns well with its recently established Strategic Plan (2019-2024), which calls for building research infrastructure to support interdisciplinary collaborations, better engage within our local, regional, and global communities, and build mutually beneficial partnerships. To move the University in this direction, the Vice Provost for Research, Dr. Chris Curtis, initiated the …

Decomposition Of Certain Complete Graphs And Complete Multipartite Graphs Into Almost-Bipartite Graphs And Bipartite Graphs, G. Sethuraman, M. Sujasree

Theory & Applications of Graphs

In his classical paper [14], Rosa introduced a hierarchical series of labelings called ρ, σ, β and α labeling as a tool to settle Ringel’s Conjecture which states that if T is any tree with m edges then the complete graph K2m+1 can be decomposed into 2m + 1 copies of T . Inspired by the result of Rosa [14] many researchers significantly contributed to the theory of graph decomposition using graph labeling. In this direction, in 2004, Blinco et al. [6] introduced γ-labeling as a stronger version of ρ-labeling. A function g defined on the vertex set …
