South East Coastal Conference on Languages & Literatures (SECCLL)

Integrating Video Evidence In Mixed Methods Research: Innovations, Benefits, And Challenges For Research Exploring How Beliefs Shape Actions, Tashane K. Haynes-Brown, Peggy Shannon-Baker
Curriculum, Foundations & Reading: Faculty Publications
The purpose of this article is to demonstrate the benefits of using video evidence as a catalyst for innovative integration in mixed methods research. We illustrate how video data were used in the elicitation interviews of three teachers to understand their interpretations of how their beliefs align with their observed practices and how they attempted to reduce cognitive dissonance that became apparent during the video elicitation interviews. This article draws from the mixed methods case study phase of a larger explanatory sequential mixed methods study conducted in Jamaica with 248 secondary school teachers. A subsample of eight teachers participated …

Georgia Educational Researcher
Most teacher education assessments are criticized for lacking validity and reliability. This study describes the process of developing the Observation of Field Performance rubric to assess initial teacher candidates’ classroom performance and establishing the content validity as well as reliability of the rubric. A panel of content area experts determined that 10 out of 12 items of the rubric were essential and the CVR was above the acceptable range for all 12 items, indicating that the rubric had a strong content validity. Additionally, the analysis of instructors’ ratings on the rubric showed that the rubric had good level of internal …

Literature-Based Pedagogy In The Composition Classroom, Emily F. Sammons
Student Success in Writing Conference (1999-2021)
In a world of multicultural communication, traditional literature gets pushed aside in favor of the most innovative way to teach students writing skills across an array of curriculums. In this session, the presenter will grapple with the key question: is integrating these approaches achievable, and does this choice of pedagogy best serve the FYW classroom?

Role-Playing Scenarios In The Writing Classroom, Timothy Giles
Student Success in Writing Conference (1999-2021)
Role-playing games have long been part of the corporate world, but they have recently engaged the university curriculum, with dynamic results. First developing in history and other humanities classes, they can also provide FYW and other writing students an engaging context for their work. How to play these games is explained and critiqued, with suggestions for how potential problems may be avoided. Where the curious instructor can fnd micro-games, which can be played in one or two classes, is included, as well as support for developing new games to highlight contemporary issues.

#Clickbait: Social Media, Attraction, And Relational Development, Albani I. Berryhill
Honors College Theses
In the age of social media networking and online dating, interpersonal communication has evolved. Today’s young adults have grown up during the evolution of social media. Social Penetration Theory (SPT) proposes that interpersonal relationships develop through self-disclosure (Punyanunt-Carter, 2019). As we move from public to more private information in the process of self-disclosure, we develop deeper and closer interpersonal relationships. The purpose of this study is to analyze attraction, perceived authenticity, and relational development on social media through the SPT lens. I argue that Twitter is a popular social media platform that encourages user authenticity and that social media users …
