Absolute Seduction: The Faustian Motif In Balzac And Valéry, Scott Shinabargar
Absolute Seduction: The Faustian Motif In Balzac And Valéry, Scott Shinabargar
The Coastal Review
This article analyzes ways in which the "quest for the absolute" is treated in two works: Balzac's novel, of the same name (La Recherche de l'absolu), and Valéry's Monsieur Teste. Both texts involve a paradoxical narrative device, by which the genius of the protagonist is communicated to the reader, not by the representation of his thoughts, but by a veiling of them--an impenetrable interiority that suggests communion with the absolute. This device is successful, to the degree that it plays upon our own desires for transcendent knowledge. Under closer scrutiny, however, we find that such texts must eventually …

Tracing The Threads: A Curriculum Study Of The Dialogue Of Otherness In The Histories Of Public And Independent Schooling, Kelley Jean Waldron
Tracing The Threads: A Curriculum Study Of The Dialogue Of Otherness In The Histories Of Public And Independent Schooling, Kelley Jean Waldron
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
This work is a postmodern, historical analysis that seeks to trouble the private/public distinction that is traditionally drawn in educational history and theory by examining the histories of public schools and independent schools around the topics of identity politics, accountability, and globalization. Although there is much literature and research regarding these topics within the context of public schooling, much of it is ahistorical in many respects. There is much less scholarly work discussing these topics in the sector of independent schooling. The majority of the literature on the topics of identity politics, accountability, and globalization in schooling takes an either/or …

Beliefs Of Georgia Educators Regarding After-School Programs, Fran Ridgeway Oakley
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
The purpose of this research study was to determine middle school educators' beliefs regarding strategies that are useful for effective implementation of middle school after-school programs. The individuals most appropriate to provide the answers to the research question included middle school after-school program directors and teachers. A purposive sample of two middle schools in the Northeast Georgia (NEGA) Regional Educational Service Agency (RESA) was identified on the RESA Website. A descriptive qualitative methodology was used, with open-ended questions in order to obtain detailed responses from the interview participants. Instrumentation for this study was structured interviews of selected participants. The interview …
Challenges That Two Georgia Elementary Principals Face In Rasing Achievement Of At-Risk Third Garde Students, Sharonlyn Jones Reese
Challenges That Two Georgia Elementary Principals Face In Rasing Achievement Of At-Risk Third Garde Students, Sharonlyn Jones Reese
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
Elementary principals are required to perform a variety of duties which include, but are not limited to, administrative and instructional tasks. Intense job accountability for all students to raise the achievement of at-risk third grade students has caused principals to face challenges and to use strategies to increase student achievement. The demands of the job of principal of an elementary Title I school are complex, especially when many of the students in the school are at-risk of failure. The legislative No Child Left Behind (NCLB) Act of 2001 mandates and obligates principals to do their best for all students enrolled …
Educators' Perceptions Of Reasons For And Strategies To Correct The Underrepresentation Of African Americans In Gifted Education Programs, Deborah Ann Dunn
Educators' Perceptions Of Reasons For And Strategies To Correct The Underrepresentation Of African Americans In Gifted Education Programs, Deborah Ann Dunn
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to determine elementary and middle school educators' perceptions of the reasons for the underrepresentation of African Americans in gifted education programs. The mixed method paradigm included a combination of both qualitative and quantitative research methods. The two instruments used were an eight-item interview questionnaire and a two page researcher-designed survey. The participants were selected based on the operation of their gifted eligibility teams from three selected elementary schools and twenty middle schools. Three elementary principals and three middle school principals were interviewed to gain an in-depth knowledge of the reasons for and strategies to …
Exploring Teachers' Beliefs About The Underrepresentation Of Minority Students In The Gifted Program In A Mid-Sized Suburban School District In Georgia, Pamela Holt Colvin
Exploring Teachers' Beliefs About The Underrepresentation Of Minority Students In The Gifted Program In A Mid-Sized Suburban School District In Georgia, Pamela Holt Colvin
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
Over the past 30 years, the national numbers of kindergarten through 12th grade students from diverse backgrounds have nearly doubled. Based on the enrollment count in 2005, the state of Georgia experienced a similar change as minority students became the majority in Georgias public schools. Even though this has occurred, the total statewide number of minority students enrolled in the gifted program and the number of minority students enrolled in the gifted program in some school districts in Georgia is not representative of this diversity. The underrepresentation of minority students in the gifted program is a concern voiced in research …

Georgia Superintendents' Perceptions Of The Minority Achievement Gap, Thomas Watson Usry
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
The purpose of this study is to examine Georgia superintendents' perceptions of both the possible causes of and proposed remedies for closing the Minority Achievement Gap (MAG). Using a survey instrument developed by the author, the perceptions of Georgia public school superintendents are explored. This study codifies this information so that it is available for consideration by all superintendents interested in becoming more effective leaders and in closing the MAG. As chief executive officers of school districts who play crucial roles in the education of Americas children, superintendents play a major role in addressing all aspects of the MAG, yet …

Reconciling Research, Teaching And Scholarship In Higher Education: An Examination Of Disciplinary Variation, The Curriculum And Learning, George Lueddeke
International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning
Integrating research and teaching in research-intensive universities is an unresolved issue as we head into the 21st century. While studies conclude that the early years of the undergraduate curriculum should be more intellectually exciting, few universities have implemented approaches such as research-led learning. The conceptual shift that is necessary involves harmonisation of the collegial and developmental cultures. Of the forces that support convergence, focusing on the curriculum and learning design may offer the best potential for connecting students and academics to knowledge communities and linking the research, teaching and scholarship missions. An important element in transforming the research-intensive university is …

Delving Into Teachers’ Development Through Portfolio Reflections: Case Studies Of Three Teachers, Rebecca Fox, Stephen White, Julie Kidd, Gail Ritchie
International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning
As part of longitudinal research on the role and scope of portfolios in teacher education programs, this study employs a case study approach to systematically examine the portfolio contents and reflections of three teachers enrolled in an advanced professional development master’s degree program in education; the three teachers were purposely selected as representative of the teachers in our program. Specifically, we examined the written reflections submitted in their program portfolios and transcripts from their exit presentations to identify connections to program learning outcomes and to gain insight into the scope and nature of the change of the teachers during the …
Study Of The Professional Learning Practices Of Three Rural Elementary Title I Distinguished Schools In Georgia, Sandra Kay Adams
Study Of The Professional Learning Practices Of Three Rural Elementary Title I Distinguished Schools In Georgia, Sandra Kay Adams
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
The research explored the current professional learning practices in place at three elementary schools within the same district to determine what school wide and individual professional learning practices have been implemented and if they have played a role in their success as Title I Distinguished Schools. The research also explored the extent to which the three schools reflect the five dimensions of a professional learning community: 1) shared and supportive leadership, 2) shared vision and values, 3) collective learning and application, 4) shared personal practice and (5) supportive conditions (collegial relationships and structures). A mixed methodology collective case study design …
African American Educators: Why They Teach In Rural Georgia School Districts And Why They Remain There, Sarah Louise Alonzo-Osborne
African American Educators: Why They Teach In Rural Georgia School Districts And Why They Remain There, Sarah Louise Alonzo-Osborne
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
The student population in the public school systems throughout the United States has become more racially and ethnically diverse, yet the minority teacher population has declined sharply. Currently, Caucasians comprise an overwhelming majority of the teacher population while African American teachers represent approximately only 8% of the field. This study explores the African American educators' experiences of teaching in rural Georgia school districts. This study is being conducted to identify what factors influence African American educators' decisions to teach in rural Georgia school districts and why they remain there. In order to explore the experiences from the participants' perspective, a …

Paper 5: Preservice Teachers’ Disposition Self-Appraisals: Is There A Connection To Mathematics Instructional Practices?, Shonda Lemons-Smith
Georgia Association of Mathematics Teacher Educators (GAMTE) Annual Conference (2007-2019)
This paper explores preservice teachers’ dispositions and the connection to mathematics instructional practices. The Theory of Culturally Relevant Pedagogy served as the theoretical grounding for the study. Hence, its three broad propositions: conceptions of self and others, social relations, and conceptions of knowledge structure the argument presented. The participants in the study are elementary preservice teachers enrolled in a post-baccalaureate alternative certification program. The full-time, accelerated program focuses on and is specifically designed for individuals committed to teaching in urban, high-poverty schools. A dispositions survey, open-ended narratives, and teaching observation rubric served as data sources for the qualitative study. Findings …
