The Relationship Between Scholarly Teaching And Sotl: Models, Distinctions, And Clarifications, Michael K. Potter, Erika D.H. Kustra
The Relationship Between Scholarly Teaching And Sotl: Models, Distinctions, And Clarifications, Michael K. Potter, Erika D.H. Kustra
International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning
We examine, through conceptual analysis and investigation of the available literature, some commonly assumed models of the relationship between SoTL and scholarly teaching, demonstrate how those models fare against the conceptual and empirical evidence, and propose an alternative that better represents the concepts involved. Both our definitions and the model we choose to represent their relationship impact our decisions regarding policies, programs, and resources. If the assumptions behind these practices are not warranted, our reflexive use, dissemination and propagation of these practices must be questioned.

Examining Classroom Negotiation Strategies Of International Teaching Assistants, Gwendolyn M. Williams
Examining Classroom Negotiation Strategies Of International Teaching Assistants, Gwendolyn M. Williams
International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning
From a constructivist point of view teacher identity evolves as the teacher interacts and negotiates with others. However, before negotiation can occur, instructors must establish their own teacher identity as a starting position. This narrative study analyzes how international teaching assistants negotiated with their American undergraduate students. Twenty participants engaged in two individual interviews and a videotaped classroom observation where the negotiation strategies were discussed and observed. Findings revealed that although experience improved their negotiation skills, many international teaching assistants struggled with negotiating with students because they did not understand the students’ background. Furthermore, cultural norms influenced how participants approached …
The Potential For Teaching Quantitative Reasoning Across The Curriculum: Empirical Evidence, Nathan D. Grawe
The Potential For Teaching Quantitative Reasoning Across The Curriculum: Empirical Evidence, Nathan D. Grawe
International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning
Educational theorists have argued that effective instruction in quantitative reasoning (QR) should extend across the curriculum. While a noble goal, it is not immediately evident that this is even possible. To assess the feasibility of this approach to QR instruction, I examine papers written by undergraduates for submission to a sophomore writing portfolio. I distinguish papers in which QR is central to the main thrust of the argument (“centrally relevant”) from those in which QR would strengthen the argument by providing context, enriching description, or presenting background (“peripherally relevant”). I find extensive potential for QR instruction across the curriculum. In …

Increasing Cervical Cancer Screening In A Hispanic Migrant Farmworker Community Through Faith-Based Clinical Outreach, John S. Luque, Dinorah Martinez-Tyson, Talar Markossian, Ji-Hyun Lee, Rachel Turner, Sara Proctor, Janelle Menard, Cathy D. Meade
Community Health: Faculty Publications
Objective: Partnerships between academic medical centers and faith-based community organizations have been associated with increased screening rates in low-income minority women. We describe clinical outcomes of an outreach partnership between a cancer center and a faith-based outreach clinic offering gynecologic screening services in central Florida to increase cervical cancer screening adherence in a priority population of primarily Hispanic farmworker women.
Methods: Data sources included a retrospective chart review. This descriptive study examined patterns of cervical cancer screening behavior among the patient population of the faith-based outreach clinic.
Results: Findings suggest that among this group of patients, the demographic factors that …

Barbershop Communications On Prostate Cancer Screening Using Barber Health Advisers, John S. Luque, Brian M. Rivers, Clement K. Gwede, Maisha Kambon, B. Lee Green, Cathy D. Meade
Community Health: Faculty Publications
Objective: The authors report the outcomes of a community-based, barber health adviser pilot intervention that aims to develop customized educational materials to promote knowledge and awareness of prostate cancer (CaP) and informed decision making about prostate cancer screening (PCS) among a predominantly African American clientele.
Method: First, the authors implemented a series of learner verification processes with barbershop clients (n=15) to adapt existing CaP health promotion materials. Following intervention implementation in the barbershop, they conducted structured surveys with barbershop clients (n=40) to evaluate the intervention. Results: Findings from the posttest showed both a significant increase in barbershop clients' …

Perceptions Of Middle School Teachers Regarding The Use Of Standardized Testing Data, Darrell Lamar Stephens
Perceptions Of Middle School Teachers Regarding The Use Of Standardized Testing Data, Darrell Lamar Stephens
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
Principals and teachers are under continuous pressure to improve student learning. The ability to analyze standardized testing data provides a tool for educators to use in their effort to combat students' deficiency in learning. The researcher conducted the study in four middle schools in a Georgia school district located outside of metropolitan Atlanta, which is in the beginning stages of providing training to teachers, and administrators on how to use standardized test results to improve student learning. To accomplish the purpose of this study, the researcher analyzed the surveyed responses of 242 participants, all middle school teachers. The method for …

Design And Development Of Intelligent Navigation Control Systems For Autonomous Robots That Uses Neural Networks And Fuzzy Logic Techniques And Fpga For Its Implementation, Christopher James Jeanniton
Design And Development Of Intelligent Navigation Control Systems For Autonomous Robots That Uses Neural Networks And Fuzzy Logic Techniques And Fpga For Its Implementation, Christopher James Jeanniton
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
This research compares the behavior of three robot navigation controllers namely: PID, Artificial Neural Networks (ANN), and Fuzzy Logic (FL), that are used to control the same autonomous mobile robot platform navigating a real unknown indoor environment that contains simple geometric-shaped static objects to reach a goal in an unspecified location. In particular, the study presents and compares the design, simulation, hardware implementation, and testing of these controllers. The first controller is a traditional linear PID controller, and the other two are intelligent non-linear controllers, one using Artificial Neural Networks and the other using Fuzzy Logic Techniques. Each controller is …
