Journal of the Georgia Public Health Association

Background: The Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has led to over 1.2 million deaths in the United States. Given the staggering scale of the pandemic, rural hospitals faced heightened challenges due to limited resource availability and underlying patient characteristics.

Methods: In this context, we examined patient and hospital-related factors associated with inpatient mortality due to COVID-19. This study is a retrospective chart review of patient outcomes of patients who were hospitalized in a Southwest Georgia rural hospital with COVID-19 during the initial onset of the outbreak and over the following 23 months of the pandemic. Patient demographics, other characteristics, …

Rates And Predictors Of Intention To Get Preventive Screenings Among Individuals In Recovery From Substance Use Disorders, Afsha Hossain, Ban A. Majeed, Lia Pierson Bruner

Journal of the Georgia Public Health Association

Background: Individuals with substance use disorders (SUDs) are at greater risk for chronic disease but often face barriers to access and uptake of preventive screenings, so the aim of this study was to identify rates and predictors for intention to get preventive screenings among residents at two recovery centers.

Methods: We used a cross-sectional survey (N=95, response rate 51%) to determine previous screening rates and the intention to get recommended preventive screenings among residents of two long-term recovery programs in Athens, GA, using bivariate analysis with chi-square to look for associations with intention.

Results: Prior use of preventive health services …

Organizational Characteristics Associated With Health Information Systems Adoption In Local Health Departments During The Covid-19 Pandemic, Nardeen Shafik, Gulzar H. Shah, Timothy C. Mccall, Bettye A. Apenteng, Mansoor Abro, William A. Mase Mar 2026

Organizational Characteristics Associated With Health Information Systems Adoption In Local Health Departments During The Covid-19 Pandemic, Nardeen Shafik, Gulzar H. Shah, Timothy C. Mccall, Bettye A. Apenteng, Mansoor Abro, William A. Mase

Health Policy & Community Health: Faculty Publications

Background: The COVID-19 pandemic revealed persistent gaps in local health department (LHD) health informatics capacity. This study examines organizational characteristics of LHDs associated with the adoption of six health information systems: electronic case reporting (eCR), electronic disease reporting systems (EDRS), electronic health records (EHR), electronic lab reporting (ELR), health information exchange (HIE), and immunization registries (IR). Methods: We used a mixed-methods design, including multinomial or binary logistic regression analyses of quantitative data from the 2022 NACCHO National Profile of Local Health Departments (n = 441) and thematic analysis of semi-structured interviews with five LHD staff members. Results: About half (49.9%) …

If We Build It, Will They Use It? Aligning Resource Recovery Design With Place-Based Social Systems, Jayce Sudweeks, Helen Rosko, Matthew R. Landsman, Francisco Cubas-Suazo, Lewis Stetson Rowles Mar 2026

If We Build It, Will They Use It? Aligning Resource Recovery Design With Place-Based Social Systems, Jayce Sudweeks, Helen Rosko, Matthew R. Landsman, Francisco Cubas-Suazo, Lewis Stetson Rowles

Public & Nonprofit Studies: Faculty Publications

Recovering water, nutrients, energy, and critical materials from waste streams is essential for building resilient and circular water systems. Yet many recovery technologies fail to achieve adoption or persistence beyond pilot scales because they overlook the social and institutional contexts that shape implementation. This Perspective reframes resource recovery as an adaptive challenge, i.e., one that depends as much on governance capacity, trust, and collective learning as on technical optimization. We propose a watershed- and place-based framework that situates recovery systems within the ecological and institutional boundaries where communities, infrastructure, and governance intersect. Within this discussion, the Community Capitals Framework offers …

Dark Times In West Belfast: The Life And Times Of Brendan Hughes (1948–2008), Aaron Brinker

Armstrong Undergraduate Journal of History

This paper covers the life and career of notable IRA operative Brendan “the Dark” Hughes and how his thoughts on the “Armed Struggle” or “Cause” changed over time. Brendan Hughes was forced to frequently deal with violent and heavy handed discrimination from Protestants, which led to him joining the Paramilitary movements as a result of frustration and misplaced youthful vigor. Brendan played a major role in the Troubles through his planning of prolific violent attacks such as the Four Square Laundry attack, Bloody Friday, and the H Block blanket protest and subsequent hunger strike in the Maze Prison. Brendan’s disconnect …

Student Liaisons For Autism: Using College Students In Bridging The Communication Gap, Michael Ota, Gabrielle Carter, Anna Mittal Jan 2026

Student Liaisons For Autism: Using College Students In Bridging The Communication Gap, Michael Ota, Gabrielle Carter, Anna Mittal

Georgia Educational Research Association Conference

This three-year action research study, currently in its first year of implementation, pairs Kennesaw State autistic undergraduate and graduate students with trained student researchers who serve as liaisons and support resources. These researchers address behavioral and social challenges in college settings, including miscommunication with peers or professors, executive functioning difficulties, and maintaining a balanced lifestyle. Through mentorship and advocacy, the project seeks to reduce risks of mental health issues, academic withdrawal, and future under- or unemployment. The mixed methods include single-case research design and quantitative analysis, incorporating pre- and post-intervention normed assessments to evaluate impact. Preliminary results show a positive …

Motivation Is A Myth: Supporting Doctoral Students During The Dissertation Writing Process, Njeri M. Pringle, Jamie Workman Jan 2026

Motivation Is A Myth: Supporting Doctoral Students During The Dissertation Writing Process, Njeri M. Pringle, Jamie Workman

Georgia Educational Research Association Conference

This session brings together the results of two larger bodies of ongoing research, one on dissertation writing groups, and one on dissertation coaching. The purposes of both studies were to determine if participating in either or both initiatives had a positive affect on doctoral students’ dissertation writing process. Data were collected via surveys and interviews over the course of multiple semesters. The session will highlight key findings from both studies. The researchers will also share practical implications they have learned from facilitating writing groups and coaching services, debunking the myth that motivation alone leads to successful dissertation completion.

Supporting Mothering Students In Doctoral Programs, Keisha M. Brown, Janie Copple, Caroline Chubb Jan 2026

Supporting Mothering Students In Doctoral Programs, Keisha M. Brown, Janie Copple, Caroline Chubb

Georgia Educational Research Association Conference

Women with children are significantly less likely to complete doctoral programs than their male or non-mothering peers (National Science Foundation [NSF], 2023). This gap underscores the urgency of addressing higher attrition rates for doctoral mothers and the unique challenges that contribute to their departure from the academy. In 2022-2023, women earned approximately 58% of all doctoral degrees (National Center for Education Statistics [NCES], 2024). In 2021, the NSF (2021a) estimated the median age of women in research doctoral programs at 31.7, with a median time to completion of 5.8 years (NSF, 2021b). A 2023 National Health Statistics Report further noted …
