Inside Out: The Effects Of Water Quality And Stocking Density On Oyster Aquaculture In Georgia, Alexandra B. Raduege
Inside Out: The Effects Of Water Quality And Stocking Density On Oyster Aquaculture In Georgia, Alexandra B. Raduege
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
Oyster growing is one of the oldest known forms of aquaculture, but this ancient practice has only recently entered Georgia’s waters on a commercial scale. With any burgeoning industry, many questions need to be answered to maximize productivity. In the case of oyster aquaculture, growers must maximize both economic and ecological productivity for the long-term success of the industry. Water quality is of particular concern for the health and wellbeing of cultured oysters with the possibility that certain husbandry decisions made by oyster growers could adversely affect the growth and condition of their oysters. This study examines the influence of …
Transcending The Taboo: Using Literature To Explore Depictions Of Suicide With Adolescents In Secondary Classrooms, Elizabeth M. Williams
Transcending The Taboo: Using Literature To Explore Depictions Of Suicide With Adolescents In Secondary Classrooms, Elizabeth M. Williams
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
This thesis examines depictions of suicide in William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet (1597), Art Spiegelman’s Maus (1986), and Octavia E. Butler’s Kindred (1979) in the context of teaching literature in secondary classrooms during the developmental stage known as middle adolescence. Using an analysis of these literary works, this thesis advocates for incorporating self-regulation practices when addressing conceptually challenging and emotionally complex ideas. It proposes model lessons and emphasizes the responsibility of educators to facilitate discussions on weighty concepts. This thesis also emphasizes the need for an intersectional approach when examining trauma and suicide. Furthermore, it underscores the unique developmental and …
So Much Courage: Hemingway, War, And Rape, Tracie Nicolai
So Much Courage: Hemingway, War, And Rape, Tracie Nicolai
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
Weaving together Ernest Hemingway’s biography and literature with her own life, Tracie Nicolai analyzes the impact of Hemingway’s life and literature in the classroom and outside of it. War trauma is analyzed in relation to rape and its lasting effects, paralleling the impacts and the traumas that shape our philosophies and our lives. Nicolai explores how Hemingway wrote of war and his own injuries, and she discusses the distance evident between his own life experiences and his subsequent fiction writings. In separate vignettes in each chapter, Nicolai writes of her experience as a rape survivor and the lasting impact on …
The Effects Of External Load Type And Eccentric Tempo On Hamstring Electromygraphy During Unilateral And Bilateral Prone Hamstring Exercise, Toraya Hughes
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
Isotonic hamstring exercises are employed to mitigate the risk of a future hamstring strain and after strain, incorporated into return-to-play protocols. However, research has negated leg dominance's influence on muscle recruitment and exercise form. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to compare muscle recruitment between the dominant (DOM) and non-dominant (nonDOM) during prone hamstring exercise (PHSE) variations. METHODS: Twenty trained participants aged 18 – 33 (M = 23 years, SD = 3 years) completed familiarization and experimental protocols > 72 hours apart. Participants underwent four PHSE variations that differed by load type (barbell vs. dumbbell), exercise strategy (bilateral …
Investigation Of Topologically Protected Wave Propagation Near Dirac-Like Cones In Acoustic Metamaterials, Md Arif Iqbal Khan
Investigation Of Topologically Protected Wave Propagation Near Dirac-Like Cones In Acoustic Metamaterials, Md Arif Iqbal Khan
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
This study presents a novel approach to investigate an exceptionally rare acoustic phenomenon – topologically protected wave propagation (TPWP) within a solid-solid domain. While previous research has attempted to unravel the physics behind this phenomenon, most efforts have been grounded in the framework of condensed matter physics and quantum mechanics often requiring complex geometries to realize TPWP in solid-fluid interactions. In contrast, this thesis introduces a geometric tuning method that enables the achievement of TPWP with simpler geometric configurations within a solid-solid domain. Rather than explaining by the quantum trio - quantum anomalous hall effect, quantum valley hall effect, and …
Investigating Flash Flood Occurrence Using Negative Binomial Models In Maryland, United States Of America, Zainab O. Akinsemoyin
Investigating Flash Flood Occurrence Using Negative Binomial Models In Maryland, United States Of America, Zainab O. Akinsemoyin
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
Globally, as extreme weather patterns intensify, flash floods have emerged as one of the most destructive and immediate environmental threats. In Maryland, flash floods are particularly concerning due to its diverse topography and increasing urban development, which exacerbates runoff and overwhelms drainage systems. The state has experienced significant flash flood events, highlighting the need for effective models to manage risks and inform mitigation strategies. While regression models such as the Negative Binomial (NB) and Zero-Inflated Negative Binomial (ZINB) are commonly used for count data analysis, their application to flash flood modeling in the USA, including regions like Maryland, remains limited …
At-Risk Children: Adult Perception And Recognition Of Mental Health Concerns, Abby D. Lucas
At-Risk Children: Adult Perception And Recognition Of Mental Health Concerns, Abby D. Lucas
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
Approximately 20% of children ages nine to 17 in the United States struggle with mental health concerns each year (Gamm et al., 2010). Early identification of child and adolescent mental health concerns is crucial for initiating treatment to prevent recurrence or persistence of pathology into adulthood (Logan & King, 2001). Children are primarily dependent upon adults in their lives (e.g., parents/caregivers, education professionals, healthcare providers) to recognize mental health concerns and seek services (Sayal et al., 2010). Providing these adults with guidance on how to appropriately identify and recognize these mental health needs in children is critical (Crouch et al., …
Development Of A Novel Measure To Assess For Alcohol Misuse In Older Adults: The Alcohol Misuse Scale For Older Adults (Amsoa), Nathan Jensen
Development Of A Novel Measure To Assess For Alcohol Misuse In Older Adults: The Alcohol Misuse Scale For Older Adults (Amsoa), Nathan Jensen
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
Alcohol is the most regularly used intoxicating substance in most geographic locations. Alcohol use in the United States specifically is well over global averages. While alcohol misuse is generally considered to be understood as a problem for younger adults, it is often unrecognized and understudied older adult populations. Currently, there is an absence of a comprehensive tool measuring for developmentally salient behaviors, symptoms, and features of alcohol misuse in older adulthood, which blocks researchers’ ability to measure alcohol misuse well. The purpose of this study is to develop a psychometrically valid and reliable assessment of alcohol misuse for older adult …
"Shut Down And Closed Off": A Routine Activity Approach To Investigating The Relationship Between Covid-19 School Closures And Child Sexual Abuse Report Characteristics In Georgia, Spencer E. Riner
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
The COVID-19 pandemic of 2020 created a public health crisis that led to an unprecedented number of school closures. A major concern raised by child advocates, law enforcement, and social service providers was the possible increase in undetected child abuse and maltreatment. Undergirding this concern was the belief that this mitigation effort might place child abuse victims and offenders within proximity for extended periods of time. While this was a significant concern, it has rarely been analyzed empirically. To address this gap in the literature, this thesis investigates how school closures impacted the characteristics of child sexual abuse (CSA) reports …

Chronic Training Load And Dorsiflexion Range Of Motion Throughout A Season In Professional American Soccer, Tristan L. Young
Chronic Training Load And Dorsiflexion Range Of Motion Throughout A Season In Professional American Soccer, Tristan L. Young
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
Soccer has an incredibly complex movement profile. Players experience various types of strains on their body from the requirement to land in awkward positions while maintaining the ability to quickly accelerate and decelerate. Dorsiflexion range of motion (DFROM) is of concern due to the movement profile and ball control that requires constant eccentric and concentric actions at the talocrural joint. With an American soccer season spanning across nine months these demands can contribute to overuse, which has been linked to restricted range of motion. Restricted DFROM and asymmetries have been identified as injury predictors, but their relationship to performance has …

There And Back Again: Nick Adams' Masculine Journey From 'Indian Camp' To 'Fathers And Sons.', Michael F. Basista
There And Back Again: Nick Adams' Masculine Journey From 'Indian Camp' To 'Fathers And Sons.', Michael F. Basista
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
In the following paper, I discuss how Ernest Hemingway’s hyper-masculine persona influences how his male characters are interpreted by some readers. More specifically, I take the character of Nick Adams and look at him as being a representation of one of Hemingway’s male characters that diverges from the hyper-masculine persona that Hemingway had created for himself. To do so, I focus on eight of Hemingway’s short stories, with those being “Indian Camp,” “The Doctor and the Doctor’s Wife,” “Ten Indians,” “The End of Something,” “The Three-Day Blow,” “The Battler,” “Cross-Country Snow,” and “Fathers and Sons.” The development of Nick Adams …
Characterization Of Carbon Nanotube/Polystyrene Composites Prepared Via Microwave-Induced Polymerization, Hubert Agamasu
Characterization Of Carbon Nanotube/Polystyrene Composites Prepared Via Microwave-Induced Polymerization, Hubert Agamasu
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
Carbon nanotubes (CNTs), with their excellent mechanical properties, are well suited to the production of composites with good strength-to-weight ratio. However, the use of nanotubes as reinforcement is hampered by the lack of interaction between their inert surfaces and matrices. This, coupled with the van der Waal’s interactions between individual nanotubes, leads to agglomeration of CNTs in media. Functionalization is an efficient means to disperse nanotubes as well as increase their reactivity. The irradiation of CNTs with microwaves generates instantaneous, localized heating, being used in this work to trigger the rapid, thermal, free radical polymerization of styrene. Under microwaves, olefin-functionalized …

The Effect Of Lighting In Higher Education Classrooms On College Students, Caitlin M. Nelms
Honors College Theses
Classroom lighting design is important for student learning outcomes, and can have a negative effect on the physiological states of students. Interior lighting design needs to include appropriate layers of artificial and daylighting. Previous models have shown that artificial lighting can be altered to give off the same effect of natural daylight. Studies have also shown that natural lighting has a positive effect on the productivity of students in a classroom environment. Data was collected by surveying students in a classroom with no natural lighting to see how they felt in the room and if they have any lighting recommendations …

Correlates Of Celebrity Worship And Materialism, Caitlin T. Davis
Honors College Theses
The proposed study will further examine the relationship between celebrity admiration and narcissism. The proposed study will also examine the relationship of the variables to materialism. Finally, this study will examine how the extent to which one perceives themselves to be similar in some respect to their favorite celebrity correlates with the aforementioned variables. We expect that there will be positive relationships among the variables such that greater celebrity worship is associated with higher narcissism, materialism, and perceived similarity with one’s favorite celebrity.
A Philosophical Look Into The Morality And Legality Of Abortion, Alexis J. Agnew
A Philosophical Look Into The Morality And Legality Of Abortion, Alexis J. Agnew
Honors College Theses
In his Nicomachean Ethics, Greek philosopher Aristotle posits an understanding of ethics and how human life is characterized by the “good.” Aristotle argues that (I) ethics involve humans possessing a rational capacity and specific function; (II) ethics are habitual, and the “doctrine of the mean” is used to gauge proper action; and (III) justice is linked to virtue. A moral issue that can be analyzed through Aristotle’s Ethics, as well as works of contemporary philosophers, is abortion. Abortion has been a controversial topic and has been brought before the Supreme Court to determine its morality and legality. Using …
Counting Conjugates Of Colored Compositions, Jesus Omar Sistos Barron
Counting Conjugates Of Colored Compositions, Jesus Omar Sistos Barron
Honors College Theses
The properties of n-color compositions have been studied parallel to those of regular compositions. The conjugate of a composition as defined by MacMahon, however, does not translate well to n-color compositions, and there is currently no established analogous concept. We propose a conjugation rule for cyclic n-color compositions. We also count the number of self-conjugates under these rules and establish a couple of connections between these and regular compositions.

Comparisons Of Unilateral And Limb Symmetry Indexes Between Fixed Dynamometry Testing Modes, Emily E. Frizzell
Honors College Theses
Hamstring muscles strains are extremely common and can vary in severity. The biarticular structure of the hamstring groups is one reason that they are more susceptible to injuries. The recurrence of these injuries is also common even after they have been through a rehabilitation phase in their recovery. This project aims to compare and associate knee flexion and extension muscle performance characteristics between isometric, isotonic, and isokinetic assessment modes. These different modes of assessment will test analyze muscle performance under varying muscle lengths, movement velocities and biomechanical load modes. The data collected from this testing will be analyzed to see …
Rescue From Hybrid Mortality In Nasonia Wasps Through An Interspecific Introgression, Samantha K. Mcginn
Rescue From Hybrid Mortality In Nasonia Wasps Through An Interspecific Introgression, Samantha K. Mcginn
Honors College Theses
Nasonia vitripennis and Nasonia giraulti are parasitoid wasps that use fly pupae as hosts to lay their eggs. These two species can produce hybrids when crossed together. However, hybrids are only partially viable and suffer 50-80% mortality from egg to adult development. The highest mortality occurs when N. giraulti females are used in the cross. Previous research shows that hybrids with an N. vitripennis allele of a mitochondrial-targeted gene within a specific locus on chromosome 5 have incompatible interactions with the N. giraulti mitochondria, which are maternally inherited. Collaborators at the University of Rochester have generated an introgression strain of …
