Adopting Team-Based Learning For In-Service Teachers: A Case Study, Zachary M. Walker, Toh Guo Zheng, Redante Mendoza, Elise Lee
International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning
Team-based learning (TBL) is an instructional pedagogy that has gained recent popularity due to its effectiveness in disciplines such as medicine and business. However, TBL has not been widely adopted in teacher education based on reviews of research and practitioner based literature. The purpose of this case study was to assess the implementation and effectiveness of TBL in a Singapore teaching institute with thirty in-service teachers. Quantitative and qualitative data was collected from teachers about their experience learning through TBL. Research findings revealed that 1) teachers generally perceived TBL to be a positive experience, although several areas for improvement were …
Reflecting On Reflecting: Scholarship Of Teaching And Learning As A Tool To Evaluate Contemplative Pedagogies, Alexis T. Franzese, Peter Felten
Reflecting On Reflecting: Scholarship Of Teaching And Learning As A Tool To Evaluate Contemplative Pedagogies, Alexis T. Franzese, Peter Felten
International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning
Although interest in contemplative pedagogies has grown considerably in higher education, faculty have relatively few resources available to help them make evidence-based choices about the use of different contemplative pedagogies in particular disciplinary or course contexts. We propose adapting a framework from the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) to serve as a heuristic for assessment of the design and implementation of these practices. After outlining this framework, we provide concrete examples from undergraduate courses to explore how a SoTL-informed design, implementation, and assessment process could be applied to the utilization of contemplative pedagogies. The examples suggest that there are …

Examining Students’ Self-Perceived Competence And Comfort In An Experiential Play Therapy Counseling Course: A Single Group Pretest-Posttest Investigation, Paulina Flasch, Dalena Taylor, Rikke Nynne Clauber, Edward Robinson Iii
International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning
The current study utilized a single-group pretest-posttest design to evaluate students’ self-perceived competence and comfort of using a variety of play therapy techniques and interventions with a range of client populations as a result of taking a one-week intensive course in Play Therapy. In an effort to conduct course evaluation and explore student’s self-perceived comfort and competence related to play therapy the researchers created the Play Therapy Comfort and Competency Survey based on the content of the course. The results indicated statistically significant scores between the pre- and posttest measures, as measured by participants’ self-perceived higher competence and comfort levels …

Examination Of Student Outcomes In Play Therapy: A Qualitative Case Study Design, Dalena L. Dillman Taylor, Ashley Blount, Zachary Bloom
International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning
Outcome research examining the effectiveness of teaching methods in counselor education is sparse. The researchers conducted a qualitative investigation utilizing an instrumental case study to examine the influence of a constructivist-developmental format on a play therapy counseling course in a large CACREP accredited university in the Southeastern United States. Results indicated that the constructivist-developmental lens was effective in promoting the professional development of counselors-in-training. The researchers offer course-specific recommendations as well as areas of future research.
Using A Teaching Philosophy Statement As A Professional Development Tool For Teacher Candidates, Nancy G. Caukin, Thomas M. Brinthaupt
Using A Teaching Philosophy Statement As A Professional Development Tool For Teacher Candidates, Nancy G. Caukin, Thomas M. Brinthaupt
International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning
Most new teachers are expected to develop a teaching philosophy statement (TPS). In the present paper, we describe some of the major functions of a TPS and how it can be beneficial to the professional development of teacher candidates. We then describe a case example of a Residency I program and how the features of that program help teacher candidates write an effective TPS. Seventy-three senior-level teacher candidates at a large public, comprehensive southeastern U.S. university participated in the study. At the end of their Residency I semester, they completed a survey in which they rated the importance and influence …

Finding Aids
Campus photographer’s photograph files. Photos document most aspects of the Armstrong campus during this era, when Armstrong was called Armstrong Atlantic State University (AASU) and Armstrong State University. Included are events (graduation, campus visits, groundbreakings, etc.), athletics, campus facilities, many campus activities and candid and posed photographs of students, many to illustrate campus promotional materials. Also a portrait collection arranged by name, mostly of faculty and staff. An extensive collection it seems that most photos Arntzen took were archived here.

Modelling And Simulation Of Grid Connected Lithium-Ion Battery Using Homer, Shantu Ghose, Adel El-Shahat
Modelling And Simulation Of Grid Connected Lithium-Ion Battery Using Homer, Shantu Ghose, Adel El-Shahat
Electrical & Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications
In order to improve battery technology understanding the capacity fading method in batteries is very important. Battery models can be used to predict their behavior under various operating conditions. Here we proposed a simple dynamic model of lithium-ion battery with MATLAB/Simulink to observe the output characteristics of this energy storage device. Dynamic simulations are carried out, including the observation of the changes in battery terminal output voltage under different discharging/charging, temperature and cycling conditions. The simulation studies are presented for proving that the model is useful. At the end we will use this energy storage device to interconnect with HOMER. …

The Poverty Simulation: Increasing Teacher Sensitivity For Students Living In Poverty, Aviva Goelman Rice, Linda Ann Mccall, Jacquelyn E. Ogden
National Youth Advocacy & Resilience Journal
Studies of children growing up in poverty describe increasingly devastating effects on many areas of development (e.g., cognitive, linguistic, socio-emotional, affective, psychomotor). Teachers need to be aware of these findings; they also need to develop empathy for their students living in poverty. One way to do this is to experience a poverty simulation wherein participants (i.e., teachers) learn what it is like to “walk in their students’ shoes.” This report describes the history of a poverty simulation in southeast Georgia. Analysis of quantitative data, collected via surveys administered before and after recent poverty simulations, revealed the following findings: increased teacher …
Online Survey Respondents’ Reactions To Required Questions, Jeffrey S. Gutenberg, Seongbae Lim
Online Survey Respondents’ Reactions To Required Questions, Jeffrey S. Gutenberg, Seongbae Lim
AMTP Proceedings 2017
One of the most common errors committed by “amateur” online survey questionnaire designers is the improper use of “required” questions, where the survey respondent is not allowed to continue in the survey unless the question is answered. The problem with this design feature is that if a valid choice is not offered, the survey respondent must either give an incorrect answer to proceed, or terminate the survey. In order to get an empirical sense of how survey-takers respond to such situations, two studies were conducted, both employing 600+ members of a commercial online panel. Respondents were asked their opinion of …

An Exploratory Investigation Of Green Behaviors And Attitudes Towards Green Marketing Initiatives, Sam Fullerton, Tammy Mccullough, Lewis Hershey
AMTP Proceedings 2017
A sample of 205 university students provided input regarding an array of 32 issues germane to both green marketing and green consumption. A diverse array of behaviors and opinions were articulated. Respondents reported a high propensity to engage in recycling, donating used goods, and purchasing products with a longer life expectancy. They favored environmentally-friendly actions such as focusing on cleaner and more efficient energy alternatives. There was a strong belief that individuals can make a difference. A comparison of business and nonbusiness students documented significant differences on two of the 32 issues under investigation with nonbusiness students expressing greater concern …
Employee Retention In A Call Center, Angelica Pigman, Perry Haan
Employee Retention In A Call Center, Angelica Pigman, Perry Haan
AMTP Proceedings 2017
One of the most important aspects of many businesses providing customer services are their call centers. These organizations employ millions of workers who are required to address customer queries and provide solutions to both existing and prospective clients. Customer service is looked at as key factor to keeping current customers. Worldwide, call centers comprise an ever-evolving and dynamic industry, yet researchers find that there is a high turnover rate among call center agents (Pierre & Tremblay, 2011). Facing customers and answering complicated queries are daunting tasks, this is made even more complicated by the fact that call center technology is …

The Role Of Social Identity In Viewer Attitudes And Intentions, Rachel Kavena Secharan, Hillary Greenberg, Juancarlo Villatoro, Princess Brown, Jaejin Lee
AMTP Proceedings 2017
The research project aims to identify a relationship between self-identification based on the social identity theory and feelings towards a particular show. Focusing the research on four fictitious shows with similar plot lines, but different casts of the same ethnic group, the research team has created a questionnaire that asked questions relating to the shows and participant social identity. The survey sample consists of 241 individuals between the ages of 18 and 28. The results show that there is a positive predictive relationship between feeling that your social group is represented in a show and attitudes towards that show, as …
